Ivan joined us for 1 week and was a pleasure to host and get to know him . He enjoyed being with the animals and our dogs became very fond of him quickly. During the week, Ivan planted hedges and some trees as well as looking after the hens, cleaning feeding and collecting eggs. A pretty wet week in February Ivan happily got involved in the tasks.

I had an amazing time at Mama Jane’s. Staying at her house, she really does make you feel at home. You quickly feel like a family with her and the other volunteers, sharing all your meals together. She makes the best food, especially chapati. At the guesthouse, there is no electricity so definitely bring a power bank to charge in Mama Jane’s house and a flashlight. There is a small center with different shops about a 15 minute walk away. Here, you can buy essentials you may need like laundry soap or toilet paper, or just get a soda and chips :) The people in the village are so friendly and great to get to know. You will love getting to know the kids at school as well. They are so full of energy, you will never be bored, whether in class or outside playing sports. They love playing volleyball and soccer, but the field at the school has rocks, and so balls can get broken easily and the ones you can buy in town aren’t very good quality. If you are able to bring any balls with you they would love that! I can’t thank Mama Jane enough for making my time in Rusinga so special and making me feel so so welcomed.

I came to Miki with very little practical experience, but, in spite of that, I loved my stay. My host was very calm, easy to talk to, and patient; no need to raise voices; no reproach in spite of my mistakes. Rarely do I feel such clarity of mind, calm and lack of stress as I did here. Miki has a lot of great life experiences and a good conversationalist, and those qualities alone are worth going for. In the future, I really hope to visit again and cooperate. No matter who you are, she's willing to have any conversation, if you're honest and respectful, and will accept you with open arms. This experience is one I will never forget, and I'm sure it helped shape my future life and actions, and I have taken a lot of inspiration from Miki, her property, its organization, the work, the view, the climate - all of it. No matter what happens to Miki, she will live on in the memories of her Workawayers.

Emma and Rosa stayed with us for 2 weeks and they were amazing, they helped us with the cleaning of the house we had been leasing, and this helped a lot, they helped with differents tasks after this, like moving a few thing around the garden, raking, or just cleaning up. They just were loved by our children. We enjoyed talking with them around dinner and just their company in general.

Jane is a really really good person to be around with and to have helping out. She's very hardworking, very aware of the space and people's needs, very responsible and dedicated, not afraid of any task, clean, calm, sweet, organized, good energy, humble and generous!! You are very welcome to come and visit us anytime you want, it was a short stay but enough to see what a sweet person you are.

Dawn joined us as a volunteer at the start of the 2025/26 tourist season. She was quick to learn our systems and she executed the tasks assigned to her with responsibility and care . In addition she contributed towards maintaining a close knit family vibe between the guests and staff by taking part in hostel activities . We wish her all the best, and we will be delighted to see her again in the future

I stayed around two weeks with Stephan and Mimi, and had a lot of fun!! Living on a boat is definitely an experience, and I'm grateful I found the good place to try it. Stephan showed me around his special place a lot : going to town, seeing his friends and doing boat rides. He also has a kayak if you want to explore by yourself! In my case, the job was about cleaning, sanding or painting different areas of the boat. We also did some electricity job together, where I learnt a lot, Stephan was very patient in teaching me and we managed to build some lights together. Stephan has a lot of projects going on, so you can do a lot depending on your skills, you won't be bored!! Thank you again Stephan, say hi to Mimi and all the best to everyone!!

We are really glad to have had the pleasure of hosting Gerard as a volunteer. He’s a real live wire and blended in really well with the rest of the staff and guests . He performed the duties assigned to him with responsibility , and never hesitated to go out of his way to make the guests feel welcome or lend them a hand . He’s the type of guy that can keep a place alive , as he’s always thinking of activities to do together with the group , whether it’s surfing ,, finding the best parties to go to , or making a fun activity happen at the hostel . Gerard will be missed and we hope that he visits us again one day .

My stay in the humble little village of Aymanam, began at the All Living Things Environmental Film Festival (ALT.EFF) that Jeffery hosts monthly in Kochi. It was great to watch locally made films about direct climate issues that we face regionally and globally today. They also had a spoken word segment with a bit of an open ended theme, I shared a piece from my heart about life & my culture! Jeffery and I had a ride back to Aymanam by local bus that night & it was nice to have some friendly company. Jeff is such an awesome human being who has so many amazing topics of conversation. We enjoyed many conversations, and equal noble silence also. The house I stayed was such a paradise to wake up in! There is an abundant food forest in the backyard, right next to the river making it super lush and green. My days were spent weeding around, propagating plants and harvesting lots. When I was there it was monsoon season, so it was raining on and off, but lots of mangosteens, soursops, bananas, nutmegs and jackfruit ! it is a haven for anyone who loves exploring the jungle, but also loves a dry humble abode to return to. I ended up staying one week, went about my travels for some weeks and I ended up back at Jeff's place for another week before I returned home. He also enjoys meditation and mindfulness - so he is a gentle and aware human. We had some great chats about life and the world and we were also able to respect each other’s need for space when necessary. I hope to go back one day, I know I will! until next time. ✨ Review from Indianna. :)

I stayed here for 2 weeks around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and I was so sad that I couldn’t stay longer. This is an amazing Workaway that really has it all. I missed it so much after I left. The people here are incredibly kind, and the place is so chill. It really heals you and makes you slow down your pace. The work is easy, and I loved working in the field early in the morning. You are always very well informed about your working hours. I usually worked from 7 until 12, with weekends free. The volunteer place itself is just awesome. It’s surrounded by nature, guarded by the sweetest three-legged dog, Dora, and it truly feels like a home. There is a living room and a kitchen, and bikes are available to get around or go to the city. But in the end, I mostly stayed there and didn’t do much at all. I focused on my meditation and yoga, did some artwork, cooking, reading and journaling. This is the perfect place for that, especially for yoga and meditation, with the kindest guidance from Dada, the teacher, and Sugatii. It was also really nice that Agneya took us to a few places by car. I’m so grateful to all of them, and especially to Sugatii and Yogabalam for bringing us the food we asked for or sometimes cooking for us. They really make you feel at home and take such good care of you. I would definitely recommend this place and truly hope I will be back someday. Big 💛 for this place and its people.

I stayed here for about month. The staff are so lovely and warm, and the atmosphere created really feels like a family and not work. My favorite parts were when we were all together, whether for our family meals by the river or our nights out for hotpot, happy water, and karaoke. I’ve done several Workaways before, and I can honestly say this experience still completely blew me away and surprised me in the best way. I couldn’t recommend this place more highly. Hope to see you all again soon!

I can't begin to tell you what a gift from Tasmanian heaven Hamish and his two friends Sakura and Beth were to me.! I'd basically spent the summer months enjoying the sun with friends and visitors and fallen very behind with tasks around the house and land. Like really behind!. I was sitting on the lake beach in September finally admitting this to myself and realising what lay ahead of me and thinking I wish now that I had some brilliant workawayers contact me... and an hour later poof! like a genie from a lamp had heard me ..... there was a message from these brilliant people saying they could come imminently ! That's why they were a gift. And the gift just kept on giving ! I've rarely experienced such competent and confident workawayers that are in their early 20's. I was never so skilled and confident and resourceful at that time of my life!. I barely gave them any guidance and they bulldozed their way through all tasks taking 10 mins when I thought it would take an hour. Having three people , meaning there was 4 of us working at something, meant that pretty much EVERYTHING that had mounted up over the summer was completed in the only 9 days that they were here. And best of all is that they seemed to all be having such a laugh together with every task, and took pride in it all. I would have loved to have had them for longer, not just for their competence but for their great company and infectious zest for fun, their joie de vivre. I love me fun time off at the lake and the river and they totally embraced that too which was super. What did they do....we gave the chicken house a thorough spring clean and they mended/ created outside perches for the chickens outside sleeping arrangement. Over a few days, a little a day they dug up and sorted a lot of potatoes! They disassembled the vegetable growing area for the winter, strimmed small trees and the undergrowth around the barn, cut the grass, cut up branches with the chainsaw and split many logs and stacked them ready for the winter. Created wood block steps to make it easy to reach the platform up a steep hill. We spent a day clearing out a big mess that had mounted up inside the barn and we took a bunch of heavy stuff to the recycling centre, and then they tidied away things in their right places and created new places for things, so it looks a bit more like sanity in there now, and I can find stuff! They renewed the paintwork on the outside windows and the shutters around the house so it looked like brand new! Moved rocks and earth and landscaped a troublesome park near the front of the house. Moved a humungous rock to its new proud spot by the house. Made fabulous Japanese inspired pizza with my home grown pumpkins with miso. Became my dogs best new mates jumping off the paddle board with him... he was visibly sad when they left. Sorry guys if I have forgotten anything.. it was so much that you did! If any one of these people; Hamish, Beth or Sakura contact you, then you've just got to say yes... they are all equally competent, equally amazing, equally great company. It would be your lucky day.

This was my first ever Workaway experience, and I truly enjoyed my time (about 3 weeks) at Carrie and Gibby's farm! I was lucky to be there when there were two sheep dog pups to take care of 😍 (missing Ash and Queen already!) Other than learning about sheep dogs and their unbelievable and interesting working methods, I got to do gardening jobs and care for chickens as well as help with cleaning, cooking and baking (so many delicious recipes to take home with me!) I also had an opportunity to join Gibby in sheep farming tasks occasionally, and it was so much fun and it just blew my mind how many skills and knowledge is required there. Carrie and Gibby, thank you for this unforgettable experience. I really appreciate you for sharing a piece of your life and taking time to teach and show me new skills and knowledge. And thank you for being so kind and helpful. Hope we'll meet again! ❤️

I stayed at George and Carin's from September to December 2024 (took me a little while to write this feedback, so sorry guys!) and I had a great great time. Thank you for having me. George and Carin are fantastic hosts and they will treat you like family. It was so much fun to learn about winemaking and the region. George is really passionate about it and will teach you everything you want to know and more! Thank you Carin for teaching me how to crochet, I still love it, and George for all the fun times, the beer and wine tastings, the good food! Give my love to all the dogs (tell Rocky I miss him lots!), cats and chicken!

A bientôt !

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting Brooke and Conor from England for about a month, and they made an incredible impact on our animal shelter. From day one, their dedication and willingness to learn shone through, even though it was their first Workaway experience with animals. They worked seamlessly with both dogs and farm animals, quickly mastering the tasks at hand. What stood out the most was their eagerness to help and their constant positivity. They were always ready to lend a hand, even beyond their regular duties, and their humor brought so much laughter to our team. They also had a knack for capturing beautiful moments with their photography skills. Most importantly, their love for the animals was evident. For example, Đuro, who can be quite reserved, formed a special bond with Brooke, and it was heartwarming to see. They truly brightened up the shelter, and everyone adored them. We’re incredibly grateful for their time with us and can’t wait to welcome them back in the future. And next time, Brooke, we’re expecting you to bring your A-game to board game night! ❤️❤️❤️
