    Description

Imagine a haven where the warmth of a dog shelter combines harmoniously with the rustic charm of a farm-it exists in Croatia. This unique sanctuary is home to a diverse community of furry companions and friendly farm animals alike. Besides dogs we have 2 donkeys, goats, sheeps, chickens, ducks, a cow and her offspring and a miniature horse. They will all live on a farm until they pass away naturally. Nestled amidst the rolling countryside, the shelter's sprawling grounds host a variety of creatures, from playful dogs wagging their tails to contented farm animals grazing peacefully. The joyful barks of dogs and the gentle sounds of farm life intermingle, creating a symphony of nature's melodies. Visitors are welcomed by the sight of cozy barns and comfortable kennels, each offering a haven for its inhabitants. This extraordinary shelter is a testament to the beauty of coexistence, where the love and care provided to all its inhabitants create a heartwarming atmosphere that captures the essence of a modern-day Noah's Ark.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Travelers can learn from cultural exchange by immersing themselves in the local customs, traditions, and way of life. Volunteering at an animal shelter can provide valuable insights into the community's relationship with animals, local challenges, and the importance of animal welfare. This experience can foster empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and a deeper appreciation for different perspectives.

  • Help

    Help

At a dog shelter, help is typically needed with tasks like feeding, carrying the water to and cleaning kennels, walking dogs, grooming, administering medications, socializing dogs, taking pictures and making videos of them so their future families can find them and assisting with adoption events.
At a farm animal shelter tasks may include feeding and giving water to animals, cleaning stalls or pens, providing medical care, assisting with animal rehabilitation and maintaining the overall welfare of the farm animals.
Both shelters also benefit from volunteers who can help with administrative work, fundraising, and promoting adoption or rescue efforts. We have a lot of greenery so help is also needed with maintaining the environment. Mowing the lawn, watering and planting the flowers, etc.

Caring for our dogs is time-consuming and unpredictable. Daily activities depend on the weather as well as the needs of the dogs, but most days we have a morning shift (from 8 in the morning till 1 pm, with a quick poop-picking round and free time in the afternoon) and an afternoon shift (from 2 till 7 pm). During the hot summer months this changes to working earlier in the morning and later afternoon, with a break in between.
We also ask for help with ad hoc tasks besides the official sometimes. These could include vet visits, picking up new dogs from the street, giving medication or random emergencies.

Please keep in mind that the work is very physical, and while you will be provided with gloves and the proper tools, cleaning up after dogs involves removing dog poop from their living area, among other things. Please do not contact us if you are not willing or able to work hard and get dirty.
We have high standards and give our all to taking care of our dogs. Should you decide to offer your help we would be happy if you did too.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will sleep in a container home in the yard, possibly shared with another volunteer. The containers each have a window, A/C, two beds separated with a wall and storage space. The containers are all connected with a shared living area with bathroom, living room and kitchen that containes fridge, stove and has everything to prepare your meals. There's a washing machine in the bathroom. In the front yard there is a house with living room, bathroom and kitchen that is mainly for the workers and guests/adopters but you can use it also when needed. There are also dogs with disabilities living there who can't stay in the enclosures and have access to the house.
At the end of the day you can enjoy a peacefull time because the staff team will be gone until the morning so volunteers have the garden and house for themselves:)
