I stayed at the hostel in Anchorage for three months during June, July, and August 2023, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I initially planned to stay for one month, but after about a week and a half I agreed with Ole to extend — and I’m incredibly glad I did. The community, the people, and the experiences made it truly special. The work was mostly housekeeping (about 95%), cleaning the hostel and dorms, with some additional tasks like prepping breakfast, getting the sauna ready for guests, bike maintenance, and taking care of the chickens. The schedule was very fair: working 3–4 days a week, which gave plenty of free time to explore Alaska. Life at the hostel was amazing. I made friends for life, joined hikes with guests, and had plenty of time to do serious hikes and outdoor trips on my days off. Ole is a great host, and the atmosphere felt like a real family. I couldn’t recommend this Workaway more to anyone who loves the outdoors, community living, and meeting people from all over the world.

Mada, is awesome would recommend having her to stay. She slotted right into our family with 3 kids and helped out with them, staying for 3 months. She brought a lot of joy and good vibes into the mix and we enjoyed our time together. We also appreciated that she had good boundaries between making sure she had her time to work or experience parts of our local area and making sure she helped out at home and with the kids! We hope she comes back to visit sometime!

It was great to have Nicole here. She helped me with breathwork and yoga practice, cooked delicious food, and supported with household tasks whenever needed. Nicole is calm, grounded, and very pleasant to be around. She brought a steady, positive presence to the space and was respectful and reliable. I really appreciated having her here and would definetely recommend her to other hosts. Thank you Nicole, wishing you all the best on your journey!

Bjørn is the kind of person you see in TEDx talks, in the news, or simply you read because his contribution to the society. It was great to host him at home, more than skills I'd say he has superpowers. He's pretty independent and proactive, he knows how to help without asking. Very social and funny guy, my kids and myself had very great time hosting him, next time is our time to visit him in Norway. All the best my friend with love from C, specially D and myself :*

I stayed for about two weeks in March 2023 and had a great experience. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place on the coast of Manabí, a bit south of Manta, surrounded by nature and ocean views. The beach is gorgeous, and there is always time to help keep it clean from garbage. The work was hands-on and varied, including oiling the bamboo structures, clearing and cutting trees, rebuilding the tire stairs, and helping with a terrace foundation. It felt good to see the direct impact of the work. Charly and Mercedes are awesome hosts and very welcoming. They even took me to Manta for a full day of shopping, which I really appreciated. Life there is calm and close to nature, with time to enjoy the beach and the beautiful walk to the local store. I’d definitely recommend them to future Workawayers.

I had the pleasure of hosting Anaïs, Thibault and Kaol at my place for about ten days, partly during my absence. They were very generous with their work and helped me make significant progress on tasks that I couldn’t manage to complete on my own. They took great care of my cats and my home, exactly as one would hope. They are experienced, thoughtful and kind people. Anaïs, Thibault and Kaol share a bit of their family experience through their long journey and quietly bring with them a warm, family-like atmosphere, which I truly appreciated. And then there is my buddy Kaol — a wonderful little boy who wants to help and is discovering life. He is already a great traveler, curious and adventurous, eager to discover new places and meet new people. He loves to learn and will definitely make you laugh. My friends, thank you for your stay and for your help. I wish you a beautiful journey and a long road ahead…

My time in Guazacapan with David and Catherine was absolutely incredible. From day 1, I was treated like family and welcomed into their home & community. Work expectations were clear and fair- I had the opportunity to dogsit, work on tasks for their property, and help out within El Barro. It's very obvious that David & Catherine want you to thrive- they're happy to adjust/tweak the work to best cater to your style & strengths. I felt super safe & comfortable within the community and surrounding pueblos. Anything you need to know, they have the answer. Outside of work, I was able to join them on various excursions and outings- ATV exploring, nearby beach towns, and other local attractions I would have never known about without them. This is a special place, with special people.

Thank you, Julie, for my introduction to the Workaway scheme. I spent a wonderful month with her and am very grateful that she gave me the opportunity to stay with her over the Christmas period. From the very beginning, she was welcoming, open, and easy to communicate with. Julie genuinely cares about the experience of her Workawayers and goes out of her way to make you feel at home. I found our conversations about the world, travel, and life fascinating, so thank you for that. Julie’s property is absolutely beautiful, set in the rural mountain town of Algodonales. Surrounded by orange and lemon trees, flowers, and her wonderful dogs Ellie and Aisha, it’s a peaceful and idyllic place to live. The variety of recipes she knows and has mastered over the years was amazing — I definitely learned a lot and will be trying out the shredded carrot salad and lentil soup recipes in particular. The work itself was simple, well explained, and rewarding. Over the month, I helped with weeding, cutting down some tenacious date palms, reorganising the wood pile, a little painting, and occasional help around the house or setting up her printer etc. It was a great opportunity to hone more practical skills, and I really appreciated the feedback she gave on how to improve further going forward. In my free time, I loved hiking up the nearby mountains to watch paragliders taking off and to admire the scenery, including places such as the castle town of Zahara de la Sierra. Julie very kindly took me to see Ronda and Olvera, which were both excellent to explore and take some great photos of. We also shared a lovely meal for my birthday and had a fantastic Christmas with some of her friends from the local area. I couldn’t recommend this Workaway highly enough to anyone looking for an authentic and rewarding experience in this part of Spain.

Rachel was a nice girl who's also good with teaching. She's really dedicated to volunteer and meet all of our expectations such as learn how to drive and could drive in a few minutes, was aware and followed all the rules. Rachel got a good heart and also good manners. She's always welcome back to stay with us.

I had a wonderful time with this family and can absolutely recommend them. They have the loveliest children and also the cutest dogs and goats. From the beginning I felt truly welcomed and was allowed to become a real part of the family and also the extended family. Both Antonia and Danilo are kind, patient, and trusting and let me try new things like horse riding. And Antonia is the best baker and there was hardly a day that she didn't bake. I was able to see many exciting moments, such as experiencing the traditional cattle drive in the mountains (Almauftrieb). Thank you so much for everything!

We received a very warm welcome from this attentive family, and we shared some wonderful moments of daily life with them. We stayed for a month. We were able to enjoy the magnificent scenery during walks with the dogs. Thank you, Karoliina! :)

Staying with this family in Norway has honestly felt like being at home. From day one I felt super comfortable, very well treated and part of the family. The work was great, especially taking care of the goats, chickens and the peacocks, and seeing how much love and respect they have for all their animals. And of course, Gus… an absolute star, I’m going to miss him a lot 🐶🤍 I’ve been really happy here, calm and enjoying every day. The atmosphere, the place, the routines… everything just flowed naturally. I’m very grateful for this experience and for how welcome I felt. I couldn’t recommend it more🫶🏼

Finca Catalina! What a beautiful place and unforgettable time i had there! The people i have met there they were super nice and helpful and made me feel really comfortable from the first moments! Andrew is a very open and nice guy with a beautiful dream that he tries to make it real! I stayed there for 1.5 months and after i came back to take part in a natural building project that i stayed 3 months more! At the 1.5 months i learned a lot about permaculture and i was taking part on different kind of projects (usually around permaculture)! The place is super beautiful,on a hill with a magical view at the Atlantic ocean and enjoying the sunsets(i got addicted!). Whoever wants to learn about permaculture, natural building and community lifestyle this place has it all! Thanks for these nice memories that i got from you! 💟☮️☯️

I've spent four weeks with the team and while I have lots to criticise I want to point out first and foremost that I think the people running the project are some of the warmest and most welcome I have ever met in my life. But: I'm having troubles aligning this project with my general idea of what a workaway is. I felt a little bit like a tourist there. It starts with the slightly expensive fee that they ask upfront for the whole period you're intending to stay; the fact that you have to rent a scooter; that they offer to organize events and excursions but you always end up paying for it; and mostly my impression that the English teaching isn't priority for them. I made so many comments while I was there and tried to focus their efforts more on practical solutions than on grand ideas, but all in vain. Nothing has changed in the four weeks that I stayed. English classes are still a mess. Communication between volunteers and teachers and hosts is still terrible. Towards the end I ran out of energy; I didn't have any motivation left in me, dealing with absent Indonesian teachers, the lack of whiteboard markers and continuously improvising classes because I didn't get updated on changes. Of course, I had a lot of fun as well, but looking at it in retrospective, it was mostly outside of the project, because I had found other people willing to show me the local culture, because there were other volunteers happy to join me on an adventure, because I'm comfortable exploring things on my own. Being part of this project gave me a good base for exploring this island, but it didn't really feel like a fair exchange. I want to repeat again that I think the organizers are good people and can be really fun to hang out with, particularly when singing Karaoke, but I wish that they would have offered me more guidance and support, such that teaching would have been a fun, enjoyable experience and such that I wouldn't have felt so lost in the beginning.

This was my first Workaway experience and I’m really glad I decided to stay to Nihal and his family’s place. I was looking for a place to acclimate for my first days in my long trip in Asia and it was the perfect place. The house is located in a very calm and peaceful environment and the family was really kind and welcoming. They made me tea two times a day and the meals were very very good. I even had the possibility to cook with Kusum which allowed me to learn more about Sri Lankan food culture! The accommodation was also very nice. Nihal took me to several temples and also to his town which was very enriching. During my stay, we discussed a lot about French and Sri Lankan cultures and I also taught him some French words as he was really interested. I highly recommend this Workaway if you are looking for a relaxing place with a lot of cultural exchanges. Thank you for everything, I will always keep an unforgettable memory of my first days in Sri Lanka thanks to you!

Rebbeka was very committed and carried out her tasks with a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail. She took on tasks for which she didn’t initially have the required skills, learned quickly, and ended up doing a very good job. On a personal level, Rebbeka is thoughtful, respectful, and easy to be around. She brings a calm and positive presence to the space, which made working with her a very pleasant experience.
