There are already many reviews about how wonderful people’s experiences have been with Dai and Sarah—and rightfully so. So instead of repeating what’s already been said, I want to share a few qualities of my experience that perhaps haven’t been mentioned. This was my first Workaway, despite having volunteered extensively in Latin America by directly connecting with local places. Here’s how my time here felt— This is a truly special place that captures both the energy and stillness of the traditional Japanese countryside. The way the wind moves through the valley, the quiet in the air, the sounds of birds and the nearby river, and the presence of towering bamboo—it all feels ancient. What photos don’t fully capture is the depth of passion woven into every corner of this space. Dai created this beautiful guest house, and along the way, discovered a deep love for bamboo—among many other things. Having the opportunity to work alongside both Dai and Sarah, and to witness the care and intention they pour into this place, was something truly meaningful. There’s a quiet harmony in how they each show up—a kind of yin and yang. Dai brings an enthusiastic, expressive energy, while Sarah carries a grounded, steady presence. One of my favorite moments was asking Dai, while we were building a fence in the garden on one of my last days, what he would choose to do if he weren’t here at this place. His answer was simple: bamboo. Thank you, Dai and Sarah, for being a part of my journey—for the delicious home-cooked meals, the shared moments, and the warmth you bring into this space. Many blessings

Sayaka was a joy to host, and we welcome her back any time! She helped with numerous gardening, cooking, and cleaning tasks while staying with us. Her positive attitude and eagerness to pitch in for any needed task is admirable. I am excited to hear how Sayaka's homestead in Japan develops! Thank you for hanging with us for a few weeks!

Helen volunteered with us for nearly 6 weeks, she is a very experienced teacher with specialist in mathematics. Helen is someone who is very enthusiastic and committed about teaching and learning with specialism in mathematics. She delivered a training session for the teachers as part of their teacher training on Assessment for Learning and Working Memory. Helen also gave a talk at the hostel to the students about gender roles and stereotypes. She spent time with the care home residents, sharing her travel phots and assisting in an exercise class. During her entire stay Helen participated in all the cultural events, festivals, Aarti, attended a charity talent show, participated in the Yagna ceremony at the Yagnashala, puja at the Gaushala, celebrated Uttarayan with the pre-school and the hostel children, attended the prosthetics camp to meet the doctors and patients and see wonderful work done to fit individuals with prosthetic limbs and callipers, visited Manilaxmi Jain temple, celebrated Vasant Panchmi, attended mass wedding, participated in republic day, dressed in the colours of the Indian flag, watched the performances by the children and gave a speech. Attended the opening of a library at a local school met students, staff, donors and gave a speech. We feel Helen made a huge contribution as an experienced teacher and we hope she will return to see the progress of the children. The whole school and campus staff will miss her.

I have very positive memories of my two-week stay as a volunteer. Hugo is extremely open-minded, kind, and helpful. During my stay, I worked in the garden in exchange for accommodation and delicious vegetarian meals (Hugo is also vegetarian). We visited an indigenous Ayoreo community in Santa Cruz twice, and Hugo shared fruits from his garden with them. He also took me to try delicious local food. During these trips, he often brought food for homeless dogs. He told me a lot about different topics. It’s clear that he has a wide range of knowledge and is very curious about the world. The stay was also very nice because of his big and peaceful garden. The only downside was that it rained a lot because of the rainy season. Thank you Hugo!

Rowan was a fantastic helper! Although he stayed with us for only one week, he made a great impact. He is a very talented artist and drew a wonderful picture of a mammoth for us. He also kindly taught us some simple English, which was very helpful and fun. He is friendly, creative, and easy to communicate with. We highly recommend him to any host! Take care and have a safe, wonderful journey ahead! Thank you, Rowan!

I stayed with her for two weeks, and even though it was a short time, I had a really wonderful and memorable experience. We share very similar interests, so I got to do a wide variety of things during my stay. Sometimes I felt like a tailor, repairing her clothes, or carefully removing pilling from sweaters. Other times I folded lots of origami, sorted jewelry parts, painted on the wall, or worked in the garden pulling specific weeds that kept coming back as the weather got warmer. I also joined her on hikes in the forest, where we collected bags full of wild garlic. None of these tasks felt like work at all — I enjoyed them so much that I sometimes forgot about the time. Even though I was clearly enjoying myself, she still made sure I had plenty of free time and days off. Honestly, it almost felt like I was just spending my time doing things I love. Food was also a highlight. I had fresh eggs from her chickens and geese, dairy products from nearby farms, herbs from the garden, and many Knödel that she made herself. Everything was delicious, and I truly appreciated the quality and care behind the meals. She is a very talkative and open person, and we had long conversations every day. By the third day, I already felt like I had known her for much longer. She shared many things about herself, the local area, and Austria, which made the experience even richer. There is also a cat named Mitzi, and I was happy that we got along very well, even though she said it doesn’t usually happen. I have already been missing Mitzi. The location is also beautiful. Her house is in a quiet area with gentle hills, where you mostly hear birds. The weather was often sunny, so I could go hiking after work, which I really enjoyed. The nearest station is about a 30-minute walk away. Overall, I had a very enjoyable and meaningful stay, and I’m grateful for the time I spent here.

Phoebe is a cheerful, very kind girl, and we had some very pleasant conversations. She's a lovely person and very positive; the children loved her and she spent a lot of time with them. We spent two wonderful months with her and wish her the best of luck for the future and her next steps.

Hosting Chiara was an incredible experience for us. She stayed for about a month before walking the Caminho, helped us with daily life around the house and the animals. She cooked amazing food, helped me keep the place clean, and took our two big dogs for occasional walks. Also with really heavy duty tasks, related to our house project and the garden she gave it all, was 100% reliable and her help had a huge positive impact on the project. Spending time with her was always a pleasure. She was very proactive in exploring the area and creating her happy environment. I’d host her again anytime 🤍

I spent 2 months with this family across February and March and I enjoyed every second of it. There is a positive and comfortable atmosphere in the house, the kids are energetic and love to play: even during winter we spent a lot of time outside playing and walking. I had a lot of free time to go skiing and explore the area around Cortina (every week day until 3pm) , even without a car. Arianna and Pier were both extremely welcoming and I absolutely would come back to do this experience again.

I was in Elisabeth's house for almost a week to take care of her cat while she was on a trip. We spent only a few days together, but I'm thankful to be connected with her because she's deeply sensitive and lovely, always worried to make me feel comfortable and like at home. Her son is really sweet and he loved to play with me. she lives in a particular house and way. It's quite isolated and if you are looking for peace and nature connection this could be the right place to stay.

We spent about six weeks in this beautiful place and had a really great time. We felt at home right from the start and had a very positive stay. During our entire stay, we were alone on site and took care of the house. The sisters were not present, but communication with them worked very well. Whenever we had questions or needed to clarify something, they responded quickly. The exchange was always friendly, reliable and uncomplicated. Our main tasks were housekeeping. In addition, we also took on some other work in the house and garden. We did this independently and on our own responsibility in consultation with the sisters. Overall, it was a very valuable and trusting experience, and we are very grateful that we had the opportunity to be there.

We had the pleasure of hosting Fatih as a volunteer in our hostel for a full month, and we can confidently say that he exceeded all expectations. From the very beginning, he proved to be incredibly reliable, responsible, and genuinely dedicated to helping in any way needed. He approached every task with enthusiasm and attention to detail, whether it was assisting guests, keeping the space organized, or supporting the team during busy periods. What truly stood out about him is his trustworthiness. We always felt completely at ease knowing that any responsibility given to him would be handled with care and integrity. He is someone you can fully rely on, both professionally and personally. Beyond his work ethic, he brought a positive energy to the hostel that guests and staff alike appreciated. He was friendly, respectful, and created a welcoming atmosphere for everyone around him. We are truly grateful for the time he spent with us and would highly recommend him to any future host or team. He is not only a great volunteer but also a genuinely wonderful person to have around.

Orion was a great workaway guess. They fit right into the house and we're hoping they come back this way.

One of the best workaway experiences we had: the only problem was that it was too short, because Matthias is such a nice person that we felt we missed some time to enjoy a bit longer his pleasant presence. A sweet, hardworking, tidy, knowledgeable, generous and interesting person. Highly reccommended also just as a host. Hoping to see him again soon.

This was my first Workaway experience, and I am truly glad I decided to come! It was one of the best decisions I made this year. Catherine and her family are very warm and welcoming people, and I really enjoyed the time I spent with them and the other Workawayer. During my stay, I learned many things in a natural way. Catherine taught us how to make a delicious salad dressing, her homemade bread was wonderful, and she even cures her own ham. Her niece also made an amazing cake and generously shared the recipe. I later tried it myself and it turned out great. This experience felt especially meaningful to me. In Taiwan, life is very convenient and it’s easy to rely on ready-made food, but here I felt a stronger connection to making things by hand. It inspired me to try to cook and bake more during my time in Canada. I also learned how to use a wood stove, which was completely new to me, and it became one of my favorite memories. Cleaning the house could sometimes be a challenge, as it is large and full of character, but it was also a great way to experience a different way of living. Catherine is understanding and open to communication, and it is always possible to find a good balance between helping and personal time. There are also many small but meaningful moments, like when she told me I have a beautiful smile while we were talking about my childhood, and of course, the unforgettable “toothbrush incident,” which is much funnier when she tells it. Overall, I would sincerely recommend staying with Catherine if you are considering a Workaway in Montreal. It is a warm and memorable experience.
