    Description

    Welcome!

We are professional hosts operating a hotel, cottages, and a campground. Having previously run a forest kindergarten for about 10 years, the spirit of nature connection and experiential learning remains at the heart of our project today.

    Our Concept: Freedom & Creativity

This place is still very much a work in progress. Rather than just waiting for instructions, we want people who enjoy brainstorming and building things alongside us. We take care of all the routine tasks like cleaning the accommodation, so you can tackle the projects we ask for in your own style and have fun along the way. We encourage you to fully express your creativity and bring your specialized skills to life.

As a general rule, we tend to work independently at our own pace rather than side-by-side all day. However, whenever a task is difficult or impossible to handle alone, we team up and help each other out. This environment is a great fit for people who are self-motivated, proactive, and enjoy working autonomously.

    Monthly Themes & Flexibility

Our project focuses shift each month. However, if you have a specific skill or craft you really want to dive into, we are more than happy to adapt regardless of the monthly theme. Feel free to get in touch and discuss what you can do!

Value Your Own Work & Personal Time

We deeply respect your personal career and pursuits. Digital nomads and creators bringing their own remote work are very welcome—we encourage you to prioritize your own work just as much as your time here.

Privacy & A Dedicated Private Room

You will stay in a private guest room within our hotel building. Because our family lives in a separate private residence away from the property, you can enjoy a quiet and independent personal space after hours and on your days off. You can fully focus on your own work, immerse yourself in creative projects, or simply unwind and enjoy your private time without interruption.

Important Note on Our Hospitality Business

While we operate a commercial accommodation and campsite, Workawayers will never be asked to handle business-related tasks such as room cleaning, bed-making, or maintaining guest-only areas. All operational tasks related to the hospitality business are handled strictly by our own staff.

Please Research Our Location & Requirements Before Applying

We are located in a rural forest setting on Awaji Island surrounded by steep hills, unpaved roads, and very limited public transportation.

Age Requirement: 25 and older. We only host mature individuals with real-world experience and strong self-reliance.

Not a Sightseeing Base: This is a peaceful retreat, not a launchpad for daily sightseeing tours or city travel.

Luggage: Do NOT bring wheeled suitcases or rolling luggage. You cannot roll them on these roads. A sturdy backpack is required.

Self-Reliance, Commitment & Accountability: With a smartphone and internet access, almost all transit routes, local geography, and travel logistics in Japan can be easily researched beforehand. Applying to stay here is a decision you make entirely on your own. Nature is unpredictable, and things may differ slightly from your initial imagination. If you tend to give up, throw in the towel, or externalize blame the moment circumstances require adaptability, this place is not for you. We expect mature travelers who honor their commitment and take full responsibility for their journey.

Skills and Knowledge We Can Share
As professional hosts operating a hotel, cottages, and a campsite, we can share our expertise in hospitality, guest care, and property management. We are also excited to discuss how we maintain this vast natural landscape and share our vision for creating unique outdoor spaces.
What We Hope to Learn from You
By welcoming people from diverse cultural backgrounds, we hope to broaden our children’s horizons and bring fresh, global perspectives to our projects. We look forward to learning about your country’s way of thinking, art, and creative ideas. Your unique perspective will help us shape the future of Awajishima Mammoth!
As an essential part of this exchange, we are also eager to practice and improve our English. For this reason, we prioritize volunteers who are keen to learn Japanese while communicating primarily with us in English. We are not currently seeking applicants who are already fully fluent in Japanese. Let’s enjoy creative country living and language exchange together!

    Focus on Your Creative Skills
We want you to focus on your specialized skills and creativity. We handle the daily routine chores, such as cleaning and general guest care, so you can dedicate your time to meaningful projects.
Specific tasks vary by month (please check our "Monthly Themes" for details). For example:
January – February: Forest maintenance and facility repairs
April – May: Farming and planting
Ongoing (Year-round): Art projects, web design, photography, and chopping firewood
We would also love for you to spend time with our children in English on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays only). You don’t need to be a formal teacher—simply sharing daily life and playing together is more than enough!
Language Exchange: Let’s Learn from Each Other!
We are very passionate about improving our English right now and want to challenge ourselves in an English-immersive environment. At the same time, we would love to help you learn Japanese!
Because we want to grow together, we are looking for volunteers who are not yet fluent in Japanese. If your Japanese is too advanced, we tend to rely on it and end up missing our chance to practice English! Let's both be "students"—we will support your Japanese, and you can help us with our English!
