Roisin and Kyle volunteered for a few weeks together at our rescue. It was Roisin's second time with us. They are an amazing couple that any host would be lucky to welcome. I stayed at place for 2 weeks with my younger sister. It was my first work away experience, and what an incredible way to start. The accommodation is ideal aswell, with a lovely hot shower, TV, WiFi and all necessary cooking equipment. I am a coeliac and they were so kind as to accommodate me with loads of gluten free groceries.
Although the work is quite physical, it was no problem for me and my sister as we really genuinely enjoyed the work as we really understood that it was all for the direct benefit of the animals. I also definelty became stronger during this workaway and was very satisfied everyday after a hard day of work! :) There is also more than enough free time during this workaway, so you have so much lovely time to spend with the animals, playing games, reading books or walking around the area. A typical day on the rescue would include feeding the animals, mucking out and doing some odd jobs inbetween :) There was a great sense of community effort, and everyone helped each other out to finish their work. I learned SO much about animals during this stay, so much interesting information about how to care for pigs especially, and I was really humbled by their intelligence and mysteriousness. There was 3 other workawayers with us during our stay, and they were lovely to meet and hang out with in our spare time.
Thank you so so so much to you all at the rescue, the work you do is brilliant, we loved every minute (even in the torrential rain ;) ) and we will absolutely be back again.

I want to leave feedback here because everyone has to know how magical my experience at the rescue was. This has been my first workaway , and I must admit that initially I was a little bit scared. However, once I arrived there I felt I couldn't be more happy.
Before going there, I was expected to find a 'non-fancy' place, as they told me, but I
… read more truly believe this place has everything you need, and even more! e.g. the bed is super super comfy, in the communal area there are lots of board games, even the Wii U! -> but apart from all of these material things, the heart and soul of this rescue that make this place special are the people. THIS is really the only thing that matters. Everyone was so patient in training me and in explaining what to do, I felt warmly welcomed and immediately considered part of this big family, even if I stayed only for a month (P.S. I highly recommend staying more than a month, because time flies away and you will be very sad leaving that soon!).
If you love animals and you don't mind spending all day outdoors taking care of them (taking into consideration the unpredictable but hilarious Irish weather), then this might be the right opportunity for you!

Everyone wants what's best for the animals and is more than willing to work for it. As well, everyone wants what's best for each other and is similarly more than willing to work for it.
This is a very special place. My partner and I volunteered for 4 months here from October - February this year. They were four incredibly beautiful, insightful, challenging and heart-warming winter months! We learned SO much about animal welfare and gained so many skills from the day-to-day care routines. There is no better place to become familiar with what it takes to
… read more provide a good life for those who’ve had it very tough. We were able to help support the sweetest, sensitive and most amazing animals rescued from all kinds of conditions, most unbearably traumatic.
The work is certainly challenging at times, accurately described in the profile, so we knew to be ready for that. We came prepared with great gear - waterproof everything is a must - and otherwise the wonderful core team were always more than ready to help with any need. What I loved most was simply being with the animals, whether through the diverse work shift activities or off-hour interactions, when you can have one-on-one time and truly get to know everyone.
I fell in love with each unique being and miss them dearly, and my heart is overflowing with memories of all their personalities, funny moments and many, many cuddles. However, we also witnessed the hardships that come with life on a rescue farm, like illness and the first-hand awareness of just how terribly abused many animals are in the world today. Fortunately there are sanctuaries like this and we are so grateful for the endless care given by the staff and volunteers.
It’s inspiring to be with people who care this much, who work so thoughtfully to give all the medical care, attention and love needed. The core team also do their very best to make sure volunteers are comfortable too. Someone always seemed to notice if I was feeling just a bit low, and they went above and beyond to offer assistance. It’s definitely a compassionate place to be with welcoming people!
We recommend coming here with high energy and strong physical and mental fitness. It’s a fast-paced environment, given the dynamic nature of rescue farms where daily events are unpredictable. That said, the work shift hours are highly respected and there’s plenty of time to rest too and have social time with other volunteers.
One important note, coming from a more introverted person, communal living can feel tough if you’re used to a lot of alone time, but this is all a part of the learning. For us, helping the animals was always our priority and main focus: being with them so closely is an experience we’ll cherish forever as we move forward with our advocacy work.
All in all, you’ll become part of a much needed rescue farm, learn loads of skills from patient and supportive staff, meet the loveliest of people from all over the world, and did I mention enjoy the yummiest of meals with scrumptious treats? Just a tiny detail aside from the best part of all: being there, with and for the animals of course!
Thank you to everyone here; for being so loving and for all the incredible work you do.You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

I was contacted last fall by the Pig Rescue who was seeking volunteers with some animal care experience to join their team during the winter season.
I had the chance to come by for a brief tour and I was certainly taken by the vibe of purposefulness at the farm. And yes, the few pigs I met won my heart!
After reviewing a document outlining in
… read more more details the work and communal living routine at the pig rescue, I decided to go back for most of March and April. Here is my assessment of my experience at the rescue farm, which includes the good, the bad and the ugly!
"The good"
Overall, it was a once in a lifetime experience working with pigs of all sizes, ages and states of health. Caring for such underrated animals was an eye opener: pigs are funny, curious, affectionate and very endearing! I learned a lot, not only from my mentors/trainers but also from the animals themselves. Cathy (owner), Tara, Sarah and Jan, who are the backbone of the organization, were an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience. Their dedication to this non-profit organization is pretty amazing and inspiring.
The rescue farm is run very much hostel style: the "crew" was quite young (19-26 years old) and very international, with most people interested in meeting other like-minded folks. We had lots of interesting conversations and many a fun game nights. I was incredibly fortunate to be assigned the only single room on site, probably out of courtesy for the age difference with the rest of the crew! I was impressed by the delicious meals that were prepared and learned a lot about vegan cuisine.
"The bad"
I will fault the rescue farm here for not being transparent with their expectations: the work hours both on this website, and in the volunteer handout I got in advance, are stated as 5hr/day. However, the daily routine is set as a 6 hour workday (8:30-12:30 & 4-6)...that is if nothing goes sideways and there are enough volunteers. Also, I was told that the preparation of meals (lunch and dinner) and dishes duties would be considered part of the volunteering hours, but they were in addition of the work hours. This is quite different to what I was told before arriving and it has nothing to do with the unforeseen nature of a farm environment that can lead to longer days than expected.
"The ugly"
Unfortunately, during the 2 months of my stay, the communal living conditions really deteriorated at the farm. Living with a group of very young adults seemed to come at the cost of cleanliness and adequate standards of hygiene. There seemed to be a general disregard for tidying up after oneself and there were often leftover snacks left on tables and counters overnight. The compost bins and food supplies storage were inadequate and not surprisingly, we ended up with mice and rats getting into our food. Storage containers were acquired eventually for some of the goods, but by then it was a losing battle agains the little critters.
In summary, the pig rescue is a rescue farm that takes animal care and love to “the next” level. It offers a unique opportunity to work closely with animals. The potential to meet and learn from likeminded people is very attractive. However, I think that volunteers should be aware that the reality of the place doesn’t fully match the description when it comes to the workload. Also, a busy work place can get messy but in my opinion, the communal living conditions were approaching an un-sanitary state.

I stayed at the farm for 8 weeks from September to November, and it was a really special time. It was my first Workaway experience, and I was kinda freaked out before I left. But on my first day there, I already felt so welcome! The people I met were so warm and welcoming, everyone was really open-minded and amazing! I also really enjoyed working
… read more with the pigs (and the other animals - horses, ponies, donkeys, cats, sheep etc.), they are amazing animals and I learnt so much about them. I was a bit worried before because I had never worked with animals, but that worry turned out to be completely unjustified. Most people there have little to no experience with animals, but you will learn fast and the core team will always take the time to help you out or answer your questions. You will usually be assigned to a section and learn everything there before you might go on to another section. There's always a certain routine, which really helps you to learn quickly, but work never gets boring, as there is always something changing. Some of my absolute highlights were moving the pigs to different enclosures, feeding them apples and treats and of course lots of cuddles and belly scratches! I also loved getting to know the new pigs that arrived on the farm as well as the little piglets that were born while I was there, they were adorable!
For me, the communal living was the thing that made my stay really special. At any point, we were about 10 - 15 volunteers who didn't only work, but also did the cooking and cleaning as well as any other chores together. We always had lunch and dinner as a group, and in the evenings we often walked to the pub, watched movies, played games or had parties. You never had to participate in anything, but there was always someone who was up for an activity ;) Most of the time, a few volunteers will share their days off on which you can explore the surroundings or walk to Derrinturn (25 minute walk), where you can catch the bus to Dublin (1 1/2 hour drive). The farm is in a very rural area, so make sure you are fine with that!
The accommodation consists mostly of wood cabins, and you would usually share a room with bunk beds together with one other person. I thought I would have a problem with not having my own personal space, but every roommate I had was really respectful and it didn't bother me at all to always share a room! :) There were three bathrooms for us to use and always two to three showers, so when everyone wants to take a shower after work, you might have to wait a bit, but in general it wasn't too bad :)
Although I loved staying there, there are a few things you should consider before going there. I was there during fall, and it was already getting kinda cold, so bring lots of warm clothes! Naturally, on a farm like that, things get messy pretty fast, so having dedicated work clothes definitely helps so you don't have to wash them too often. You will also need rain clothes and good wellies (there are always a few spare pairs on the farm, but if you want to make sure you get some, bring your own), because it rains a lot (it's Ireland after all;)) and the fields and allies get muddy very quickly.
However, during the time I was there, we had a few issues. The communication sometimes wasn't the greatest. Whenever the gas ran out or the electricity went off, we texted someone, and sometimes it would take more than a day until we knew when it would be back. We also sometimes didn't get the information we needed to get our work done quickly, and changes were not communicated to everyone from time to time. Also, as I already mentioned, the kitchen facilities, heating and electricity were not the most stable and the dryer didn't work (which shouldn't matter too much during summer, but as it started to rain more, it became difficult to dry the clothes on the clothing lines). You should also not be completely set on the five hours of work - sometimes, we had to work longer, and the cooking and cleaning is mostly done in your free time. However, I also have to say that the core team is working on most of these issues, and I know they have lots of projects planned to make the communal living a little easier for everyone.
In conclusion, I can only say that my time at the farm was a once in a lifetime experience. I met lots of great people, made so many friends there and learned so much about pigs while really enjoying the work! If you don't mind getting your hands dirty (and the screaming of hungry baby pigs in the morning ;)), aren't stressed out easily and are a little flexible, you will have a great time at this place!
Thank you so much to the entire core team for having me and giving me the possibility to learn so much, and to all the other volunteers for making it such an amazing experience! And of course all the love to the piggies, I won't forget you!

We definitely found our happy place at this rescue! It's home to some of the most lovable pigs you can imagine, and caring for them doesn't feel like work at all. As for the practical things - this Workaway fully respects the 5 days a week commitment which allows you to explore Ireland on your days off (or to spend even more time with piggies, which is what we usually did). Staying with Cathy on her farm was an amazing experience, which I won’t forget ever. I stayed on the farm for around 4 weeks and it was amazing. Firstly, it was amazing to see Cathy interacting with all the different animals. She really deeply cares about them. But of course, she also takes good care of her volunteers. If there was anything on my
… read more mind, I always knew I could talk with Cathy about that and she will try to improve the situation. I recall one situation specifically, when I was not sure how to correctly interact with one animal on the farm and that this made me feel a little uncomfortable. I mentioned this to her just incidental. However, she immediately took 10 minutes of her time to show me what I could do better, and this little session improved my relationship with the animal a lot! Furthermore, Cathy works very hard to constantly improve the quality of the stay for her workawayers. When I was there, e.g. we got a new kitchen interior (incl. good wifi).
Of course, the stay will also depend on how you get along with your fellow volunteers, but during my stay I encountered over 10 other workawayers and I got along with everybody. With more than half I still stay in touch. I think the place just attracts like minded people and also the work is perfect for team building. We always started and ended the day as a group. Just be aware that it is hard work, where you have responsibilities, and you have to be a team player at least to some degree! If you prefer to have a slow morning, being for yourself most of the day and want to choose by yourself when you want to work your 5h, then this might not be the right place for you.

I really miss the farm and I‘m so thankful that I had the chance to work with you and your lovely animals!

I left Cathy's farm about a month ago, after being there for 3 months. It had been an incredible summer, and leaving has been one of the hardest things I had to do in a long time. I have volunteered on many farms over the years, but saying goodbye to Cathy and all the animals was more emotional than ever. The day I left I was literally in tears
… read more and could barely speak.
Living on the farm was such a treat, and falling in love with pigs was the best thing that happened to me while at Cathy's. I have been around animals all my life, but had never been lucky enough to be blessed with pigs' company. I miss telling Mrs Wobbles about my life and rubbing her flabby belly. I miss Mable's screams at feeding time. I miss Milly, Louie, Squiglet, Siobhàn, Hope, Rosie, Peanut, Ava, Dora, Molly, Victor, Daisy and Colin..I could literally spend the whole day talking about every each of them. I had the opportunity to spend time with all the animals and really get to know them. I loved gaining trust of the fearful souls at Cathy's and will always cherish the memories I made there.
As I told Cathy, she was an inspiration to me (as she is to many others, I hope!). She is one of the most compassionate and kind people I know. She would drive all across the country to rescue any animal in need and would do anything she can to offer a loving home to literally any being she comes across - humans included. Cathy was the perfect host and always made sure us volunteers had all we needed (and more!). I enjoyed being independent on the farm and taking on projects - it is amazing how much Cathy trusted us all!
Not to be forgotten, Megan the trainer! I loved working with her when her schedule and health allowed and Cathy's farm wouldn't probably be the same without her.
I would highly recommend this place, and despite what others said I thought the work wasn't hard. It takes a few days to pick up the routines but once you do, time flies. I never worked more than 4-5 hours a day, and if I did it was my choice. There's no such a thing as "spending too much time with horses/pigs/goats/sheep/dogs!". Always remind yourself that you are there for the animals and for making their life a little better each day.
During my time there, I learned a lot about animal care and welfare, but I also learned a lot about myself. Animals can teach you so much, and make you appreciate the little things in life. I am always impressed by the bravery and resilience of abused and unwanted animals - they are incredible!
If you do LOVE animals and are willing to be covered in mud (and not just that!), and happy to carry heavy wheelbarrows full of horse manure every day - please look no further! I think that the ideal volunteer for this kind of place is over 25 and has farm-experience as this is not a place for self-absorbed and lazy teens and their drama. You need to be independent and a quick learner.
I look forward to going back and seeing everybody as soon as I can! Best Workaway I have ever done! 5 stars!!!
Thanks again Cathy and Neil for your wonderful hospitality and much more, Megan for the training lessons and lovely conversations, and all the animals on the farm just for being themselves.

Just a couple notes for future Workawayers:
Be ready for questions at Customs!
I thought I was going to be there for 1+ month but could only stay for 2 weeks. This was because I thought I didn't need a visa since I was planning on staying less than 90 days. However, because food and a bed were provided (the person I spoke with was already familiar with Workaway), Immigration considered this to be work and limited my stay.
Be ready to be pretty independent!
Cathy mentioned that she was busier than usual during the time I was there so I didn't see her as much as I thought I might. You may find things a bit different when you get there, but I ended up learning mostly from the other volunteers. Once I got the general routine down, I was mostly on my own but that may have been because there were only 4 volunteers for the majority of my stay. I did enjoy my chats with Cathy, though, whenever we got the chance, and she was pretty good about responding to the WhatsApp group (if your phone gets a good enough signal throughout the farm).
Be ready to be flexible!
No two days were ever the same so you need to be able to think on your feet (e.g. figuring out where the electric fences should be after the horses in the field decide to rearrange themselves) but also have patience (e.g. waiting for the horses to decide it's actually ok to go back into their part of the field).
Overall, this is a definite recommend if you're looking for hard but rewarding work! You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

The farm and small town where it's located is beautiful, nice and quiet. The people are friendly and the bus stop to Dublin isn't far from the farm, and there's a bar in town as well. All the farm animals were super nice to work with and the work wasn't a lot; after a few days I already learned the routine, my body got used to the workload and my nose got used to the smell of the animal poop. The cabin is really cozy and warm and we were allowed to do our own thing when we were off, and Megan and Cathy always helped when we couldn't do something on the farm or if we needed them during our days off.
I really recommend this place if you love animals and are hoping to meet good people (and animals). You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

Maxi and Daphne went above and beyond to help us here with our animals. Their enthusiasm and huge sense of humour is infectious and they work tirelessly to insure all the jobs get done to perfection. Loads of energy, natural interest in everything and Maxi's profession in the medical world is incredibly useful when it comes to medicating and basic
… read more nursing and he and Daphne were fantastic at the care side for poorly animals. The couple work very well together and are professional at all times. They are tidy, kind and very fun loving. We miss them desperately and are heartbroken they had to leave but at least we got to spend Christmas with them and get to learn a little about Argentina. Lots of hugs both of you.

We stayed for a month with Cathy and Megan and due to travel issues we had to continue. But we seriously consider going back, even a few days at some time.
They need happy people to work happily with the animals and transmit love to them, so their main concern is that you are well and happy doing your homework.
These people love their animals and
… read more want them to be in the best possible conditions. So you must share that concern.
The work itself is quite physical, but with a little ingenuity you can cope, plus you have all the tools you need for it.
Both Cathy and Megan work very hard by your side every day and you can ask them any questions or concerns you have.
We did not have experience with animals, but if you put a lot of attention and willingness to learn fast, it's not a difficult job.
Schedules and days off are very flexible. You just have to talk and organize well, there are tasks that must be done if or if every day.
When you finish your tasks you can take a walk to the local pub which is very nice and there also take the collective to dublin or to Edenderry (nearest city).
Your free day can also be walked to the castle of Carbury an hour away, completely beautiful and recommendable although you should be careful when walking on the route.
In this place you have all the comforts to live that you want and need, we never missed anything and they are always asking you if you need something else or what else they can do for you.
In short, it is a place where you will feel very comfortable and you will never lack anything.
Thank you for welcoming us and teaching us with patience despite our complicated language.
We're going to miss them all, especially DIVA. Hugs. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

Luca couldn't have been a more responsible or caring volunteer. We have many animals with health problems and she immediately showed how we could trust her to spot when someone wasn't well and act accordingly. She is a very good horse-woman and has a very kind heart. We were so lucky to have her and I wish Luca every happiness in the future!

Dear Cathy, dear Megan,
Thanks for the great time we spent with you and the animals. We really enjoyed the time with you. Mainly we had to feed everyone, do the mucking out and trained the animals, simply everything that needs to be done on a farm on a daily basis. During our stay we learned a lot about training animals from Megan, who is doing a
