Our host family's home is located in a quiet town surrounded by nature. The house looked straight out of a storybook. Our host family is strict Buddhist, and we calmed by listening to the Buddhist chants with the fragrant tea Hemantha brewed every morning. They taught us a lot about the Buddhist mindset, which we hope to apply to our future life. Nisha can cook high-quality meals very quickly. She is also very good with her hands, and her sewing skills made the room even more beautiful. Rukshan is a very studious and earnest young man. He always made sure we were comfortable. He took us to various places around Bandarawela. It was a very memorable adventure! Our poor English may have exhausted them, but they were very kind and dealt with us. Thank you for everything.

Nik stayed with us for 3 weeks. He painted the most magnificent mural on a large inside wall in our home. An incredible artist. The result was so much better than I imagined. He is an absolute delight to have around. A beautiful, positive, calm energy. He is polite, respectful, motivated and a hard worker. I'm so happy to have made this connection with Nik and looking forward to him coming back again one day.

My time with Vu and her family may have been short, but it was filled to the brim with warmth, laughter, and moments I’ll carry with me for a long time. Vu is such a thoughtful and genuinely caring person. From the very beginning, she made me feel completely at ease. We shared so many meaningful conversations and exchanged stories from our lives. Spending time with her son was a lot of fun. He is very creative, full of energy, and taught me quite a bit about dinosaurs. I really enjoyed playing and learning with him. Helping Vu with her blog felt natural and never like work. She explained everything clearly and made the whole experience smooth and relaxed, which I really appreciated. As this was my first Workaway experience, I didn’t quite know what to expect. But from the moment I arrived, I was welcomed so warmly and truly felt like part of the family. Being included in daily life gave me a beautiful glimpse into Korean culture, routines, and traditions, and I’m so grateful for that. Thank you for opening your home and sharing your life with me. I’d love to see you again the next time I come to Korea.

Ilse arrived with her friend Hannah and stayed with me for three nights. During this time they worked well together, cleaning my windows, deep-cleaning the annex room and shovelling compost from the bin into the tunnel house. They are pleasant young ladies who followed instructions and always put away the equipment they had used. They baked a wonderful chocolate cake!

Thank you. Really. When someone comes from thousands of kilometers away and ends up feeling at home here, that means we did something right but it also means you came with an open heart. That’s not something we can create for you. You brought that with you. What you experienced here , the random invitations to weddings, eating in strangers’ homes, working side by side with the community, laughing over simple meals that’s the real traveling. It’s not curated. It’s not staged,it can never be planned. It’s just life as it is. And I’m glad you got to see it from the inside. Afiq and Zakir will be smiling big when they read this. Around here, food is never just food , it’s how we welcome people, how we build trust, how we become family. You didn’t just spend a month here. You became part of the rhythm of this place. And whether you realize it or not, you left something of yourself here too. Batu Pahat will always have space for you. Come back when your heart starts pulling again.

I had two really interesting and funny weeks, at the marina with Killian and Pascal. Learned about the maintenance of a sailboat, cooking and the lifestyle in general. I recommend anyone that wants some insight on sailing.

It was wonderful to have Alex and Chris stay with us. They fitted so well and made big contributions to our garden, and community projects here in Denmark. They are so reliable, self managing and caring for people and the planet. I enjoyed very much our conversations and their involvement in community events. I highly recommend Alex and Chris to other hosts.

I experienced a real immersive/local lifestyle and i learned so much about the region of Mersin, the history and turkish culture ! Max and I had an incredible time with Katy and Jason. As hosts, they were more than accommodating, and made us feel at home with them. Katy and Jason lead life with a passion to do what they love most, and it was truly inspiring. We were welcomed into their life, but always given the choice to take time for ourselves, as well. Katy was a great cook, and we loved learning how to make curry from her! She additionally has incredible art projects ongoing at any point in time which was fun to witness. Jason has a great sense of humor and is quite handy in woodworking. Both are great storytellers. The conversation was never dull with either of them, and we truly loved getting to connect with them both over the week we spent together. What a priceless experience! The work was very straightforward, starting early in the morning in the garden to avoid the heat and stopping midday. We had everything we needed to do the work safely including tools, sun hats, and gloves. The room and bathroom were super cozy and clean. Pretty much all of our meals at home were taken care of which was gracious of them. Crescent Head is a beautiful, quiet town. The river was serene, the beach was gorgeous, and the people were friendly. Would recommend coming to this quaint holiday town to stay with Katy and Jason as they fix up their beautiful home. You won't regret it! To Katy and Jason: THANK YOU! We had the best time, and we appreciate everything that you did for us. Wishing you the best! --Zoe and Max

Vlad stayed only a few days and was diligent while he was here. He did a surprisingly good job sanding a car I am renovating.. It showed attention to detail. I wish him well on his travels.

Maia was excellent during her time with us. She looked after and played beautifully with the kids and quickly became a natural part of our home. She was a very fast learner with all the jobs that needed to be done and completed everything with care and responsibility. Maia also took wonderful care of our animals and handled every task with confidence and kindness. She was such a great helper and we truly hope she returns in the future. We would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a responsible and kind person to help out.

Thank you so much, Georgia, Liz & Geoff, for having me — it was truly a pleasure! You are such a lovely family, always happy to share and incredibly generous. The house and the farm are amazing, and the stable and garden are absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend staying with you, and I would love to come back again!

I had a wonderful time at Karen and Chance's farm. Besides enjoying the beautiful nature of the Yukon, I learned so much and not just about goats. For me, adapting to their frugal lifestyle was a great experience that taught me to appreciate things much more. Learning how to operate a small tractor was also a highlight, even if it wasn't always easy. Karen is a truly heartwarming and caring person, and Chance can teach a lot and always has the right thing to say, lighting up the room with his humor. However, I should mention that the cultural exchange was limited at times, partly because there were five Workawayers at once (during wintertime, so everyone was in the house) and the hosts were unwell towards the end of our stay. Still, potential volunteers should be aware that they have a significant cannabis habit going on.

I had the pleasure of staying with Youngchul for 4 nights + his wife Mimi in Seoul for 2 nights. They are both warm, kind, generous, lovely people. The work on the farm was new to me (thanks for your patience!) but I enjoyed it and chatting with Mimi to practice her English was enjoyable too. Thanks for everything you two! I hope to host you if you are ever in California 🙂

Maja and Luigi were very kind and welcoming. Even though we had a bit of a language barrier, I still felt like I was at home here. The environment was lovely and relaxing. The dog and cat were absolutely adorable. I got to experience a truly local Italian lifestyle, and it became a very unique and unforgettable memory for me☺️

Jane was an excellent host and welcomed us into her home with open arms. Jane is bubbly personality that is larger than life. Jane has a strong work ethic but is fair with her expectations when setting work to be done. We will never forgot our time at Jane's especially the dogs (biscuito and chico) and her amazing cooking. Jane provided us with everything we needed in the house and outside, with recommendations of what to do around the city. I cannot recommend staying with Jane enough. We look forward to hopefully seeing her again in the future.

Well what can I say... My stay at Mike's was simply extraordinary (I stayed 2 weeks). Not only the place is beautiful, Mike's project of planting and make native plants fleurish is inspiring, and the whole region has beautiful places to discover, but also, and perhaps more importantly, Mike has shown constant kindness, flexibility, and has always been attentive to everybody's needs. You would have to try hard to feel out of place there. The work has been fairly distributed and can varry also, which is nice. So, thank you again Mike, it was a real pleasure !

We had a fantastic time staying with Carolina, Federico and family in Viterbo. They really are great hosts, a perfect place for workaway volunteers to stay and see how a lovely Italian family lives. They are friendly and open, and we shared lots of experiences such as bathing in the local hot springs, family walks in the woodlands and numerous trips into Viterbo which has interesting history and loads to see. We enjoyed being able to cater for ourselves during the day as all the food we could want was provided, but we always looked forward to eating with the family in the evening for some authentic Italian home cooked food. We're also grateful to have had the opportunity to learn how to make gnocchi and melanzana parmigana, 2 of our favourite Italian dishes. Although the weather was pretty wet during our 2 week stay, we hope that we were able to help a small way towards managing their olive trees, tidying up, feeding the animals and other little jobs. We will always think fondly about our stay and will look forward to visiting again one day. Thanks to Carolina and Federico for everything! Fingers crossed for some good weather from now on 🤞🏻🌞
