    Description

We’re Katy and Jason. We’re originally from London and have lived in Northern NSW for many years. We’re now Australian citizens and very settled into coastal life.
    Katy
 - I’m an artist working across painting, textiles and sculpture, creative through and through. I love books, film, and long conversations about ideas. I’m told I’m a good cook, I’ll let you be the judge.

    Jason
 - I’m a retired London advertising photographer, now happily living life down under. I love snorkelling, solving practical problems creatively, and going down rabbit holes with science, documentaries, and left-field thinking about life and how people live it. We’re organised, straightforward, and value clear communication. We like things relaxed but well-run, and we expect work to be finished properly and to a good standard. We’re social without being intense, enjoy a laugh, and are always up for a good binge-watch of something smart or surprising.

We enjoy good food and a decent wine, our big party days are well behind us. We thoroughly squeezed the juice out of that phase and now prefer a quieter pace of life.

We’re animal lovers but don’t currently have pets, and we don’t have children. We’ve been house sitters ourselves, so we understand what it’s like to travel this way, live in other people’s spaces, and build trust quickly. We’ve travelled extensively by motorbike across Australia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Europe through house sitting, and loved every bit of that chapter of our lives.
We value the arts, nature, culture, good food, good people, and kindness. If that sounds like you, we’ll probably get on very well.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

For us, hosting on Workaway is genuinely about sharing daily life, skills, time, and perspectives, not just getting help with tasks.

We spend time working alongside our guests, cooking and eating together, and sharing the rhythms of coastal Australian life. We’re always happy to show people around the local area, from beaches and headlands to cafés, coastal walks, and nearby national parks, and to pass on practical tips about living and travelling in Australia.

Katy is a practising visual artist and loves sharing creative time. This might include drawing or painting together, talking through creative process, swapping ideas, or simply making art side by side during quieter moments. No experience needed, it’s about play, curiosity, and conversation rather than instruction and only if our visitor wants to of course.

Jason enjoys sharing DIY and problem-solving skills in a hands-on, collaborative way. He’s happy to explain how things work, talk through tools and materials, and work together on simple tasks, always within comfort and safety levels. He also plays guitar, and music often becomes part of our evenings.

We both enjoy cooking and sharing meals, and food is a big part of how exchange happens here. Conversations tend to flow naturally around the table, covering travel stories, cultural differences, ways of living, and the everyday realities of life in different countries.

We’re interested in learning how other people live, work, and move through the world. Hosting Workawayers gives us the chance to hear different perspectives, learn about other cultures, languages, and traditions, and reflect on our own lives through those exchanges. It’s informal, human, and based on spending real time together rather than structured lessons.

  • Help

    Help

We’re looking for someone practical and reliable to help alongside us with a mix of outdoor and hands-on tasks around the property.

    This may include:

    Garden clean-up and general maintenance

Clearing fallen branches and light vegetation

Carrying materials, sanding, painting, oiling timber

Helping with site tidy-ups and outdoor projects while we work together

We want to be very clear that Workawayers are not expected to replace paid tradespeople. Any skilled, licensed, or structural construction work is done by professionals. Workawayers assist with non-specialist tasks only.

The work is outdoors and physical at times, but manageable and shared. It suits someone who enjoys being active and working with their hands. Jason will work alongside you.

We ask for around 4–5 hours of help per day, 5 days a week. Outside of that, your time is your own.

Safety matters to us. Use of tools is always discussed beforehand, and no one is expected to do anything they’re not comfortable with. Experience with basic garden ing or DIY tools is helpful but not essential.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We’re offering a Workaway stay at our three-bedroom house in Crescent Head, a small coastal town on Dunghutti land the NSW Mid North Coast. Crescent Head is known for its incredible surf break, beautiful beaches, coastal walks and relaxed pace of life. It’s a quiet, outdoorsy place rather than a nightlife town, ideal if you enjoy nature, fresh air, surfing and pies! Yes we have a pretty famous Pie shop here ( we highly recommend the Beef-burger Pie - yup that's a burger inside a pie) and theres a pretty unique 6 hole golf course right on the headland of Big Nobby.

We've owned the house for three years and haven't really done much of anything to it before now. The house sits on a generous block and we’re currently working on improving the outdoor spaces. The projects we want your help with include clearing trees, getting rid of weeds, general garden clean-up, taking it all to the dump and possibly with the construction of new decks around the property.
Crescent Head is a small town with limited public transport, so having your own car is helpful, though not essential depending on your plans.
Meals are generally whatever we’re having. We are both meat eaters with no allergies so please let us know if your diet has special requirements. We eat a healthy balanced diet.
We don’t care where you come from, who you believe in, or who you love, If you’re practical, hardworking, and enjoy coastal living with real projects to get stuck into, we’d love to hear from you.

Your safety is important to us. Any use of power tools will be discussed beforehand but if you have experience and are competent to use garden power tools thats a big plus.
