Staying with Kaaren is the true essence of Workaway. She's a very empathetic person who makes you feel at home and acts as such. It doesn't feel like work, but rather like helping out, as if you were at home, so it's not a burden, but a pleasure. The moments of conviviality are numerous, thanks to her great skills as a chef.

It was an interesting experience of Apulian cottage life — something you wouldn’t get as a typical tourist. Beautiful surroundings and charming local houses called trulli. I stayed with Milo and two other WorkAwayers, and I’m definitely happy I had this experience. However, you do need to be ready to follow quite a few specific rules, as Milo is a very organized person who enjoys his routines. We shared meals together three times a day. If you want to enjoy delicious Apulian food, helping in the kitchen is appreciated — although this also means you may not have much free time on working days. Winter evenings are really cold, so if you don’t deal well with low temperatures, you might struggle a bit, as the small wood stove isn’t able to heat the whole house. There is no Wi-Fi, and reception is quite poor inside the house, though much better outside. It was very satisfying to work mostly outdoors — in the fields, with wood, planting, painting, cleaning the storage, making marmalade, and shelling beans. Milo is a thoughtful host with a lot to share — and although he asked us not to write this, also an amazing chef! 😄 Great two weeks! Thank you!

It was a pleasure to stay with Laura. Weh ad some really good conversations. She has a very beautiful house and four very cute dogs. One is quite anxious and needs some time to get used to new volunteers, but the other three are very social. I worked in the garden, helped in the household and with the dogs. It’s a huge plus that there is a car you can use because Lauras property is not accessable with public transport. Thank you for a great stay!

We're grateful Sara chose to spend a week here with us. She fit right in - not only with the other volunteers at the time, but also with the whanau and whenua. She's all she says she is on her profile and so much more. We appreciated her initiatives and ideas, her proactively doing things as well as sharing her observations and knowledge. We can only highly recommend hosting her!

Our time with Jess, Lukas, the lovely Leo, Lena, and Martín was simply unforgettable. We were welcomed with so much respect, kindness, and care that from the very first moment we truly felt at home. During our stay, we worked together organizing firewood, helping in the garden, pruning trees, and also cooking delicious vegetarian meals that we happily shared. Even with quite a lot of rain, the experience was incredibly special — because what truly made the difference were the people and the wonderful energy of the place. The accommodation was amazing: a beautiful, very comfortable apartment with a fireplace, which made everything even cozier. Every detail showed thoughtfulness and generosity. Working as a team with everyone felt completely natural. There was always mutual help, clear communication, and a transparent and respectful relationship. We shared very happy moments together, full of conversations, laughter, and meaningful cultural exchange. We also have very fond memories of the animals: the dogs Garret and Freya and the cat Rita are incredibly sweet. It meant so much to us to see how lovingly they welcomed our dog Adele — that was truly special. And we cannot forget Leo — such a lovely and intelligent child, and impressive for speaking three languages! It was a joy and a privilege to spend time with him. The location is absolutely beautiful: surrounded by forest and close to the Dão River, a place of peace and natural beauty that made the whole experience even more special and unforgettable. We are deeply grateful for such a human, warm, and positive experience. We take beautiful memories with us and truly hope our paths cross again someday.

Auguste stayed with our family for around two week, during this time she helped out our family both in and out of the house, assisting with general house work, gardening and cooking. The whole family really enjoyed her company and she did a great job at all tasks set. She is a warm , caring and intelligent person who was a pleasure to be around. We would welcome her back any time. Highly recommended.

Léa was a great help at our place during November and December2025. She is friendly, tidy, proactive, and a fast learner, and we couldn’t be happier with her contribution. Our dog, Nero, absolutely loved her. She learned our system very quickly and, during the time I was away in South America, she took over the place with confidence and professionalism. Her communication skills are remarkable; she was always making friends and engaging with our customers, which is essential in the hospitality business. For her first Workaway experience, she definitely exceeded all expectations. We wish her all the very best in her future projects and plans. Oliver and Ori

Karine and Oli have just left our Quinta, and we have nothing but wonderful things to say about them. They are kind, hardworking people who always approach their tasks with a smile. They work very well together as a pair and integrated easily into our group. We also really enjoyed the interesting conversations we shared with them. We would highly recommend welcoming this delightful couple into your home and project. We hope Karine and Oli will return to our Quinta when the weather is a little better, and until then, we wish them all the best with their future plans.

We had a truly wonderful experience at Cornelia’s farm and stayed in her beautiful home for almost a month. She treated us as if we were members of her family, and of course we consider her not just a friend but something much more. Thank you very much, Cornelia, for this unforgettable experience. We hope to see you again soon.

How lucky we were to have Connie with us for a full month. She had every skill we were looking for and was a delight to be around and I truly believe any host would be very happy to have her stay with them. The tasks we asked were mainly guests and hotel related but she stepped in as and when needed if any emergency occured which was also very helpful. We wish you the very best! Pierre, Manon and Noah :-)

The ladies are easy going , hard working, that commit to tasks , without needing supervision . Fit in well in the family environment , respectful and kind. Great with our animals. Flexible and fun, taught us new card games and enjoyed chats around the table. More than happy to have them back.

I spent to weeks at the beginning of January with Renetta, David and Lea and I really have grown fond of them! All the three of them are really kind and sweet people. One thing which made me feel very comfortable (and sad to be leaving, when I left) is the kindness and love they show to eachother in their family. Lea also likes to make some chaos, but nobody will be angry about that, because she is such a sunshine and very cute, funny and smart. The things that I did are: weeding, planting little radishes and lettuce from the greenhouse into the veggie garden, sowing new radishes, painting a door and David showed me how to make a professional compost. I also got to see the place in Maro where the friut, bread and vegetables of the cooperative are sold, which was very nice. (I am sure I am forgetting something right now.) I also happily helped with the kitchen, but they always told me, I shouldn't feel obligated to do that. My first task of all was to collect oranges from the tree and make orange juice for breakfast, which was really special for a girl from Germany. :)) I learned about the basics of permaculture, Renetta showed me how to make a bread and I learned some more Spanish and a bit of dutch of course. With their daughter Lea Renetta and David mainly speak dutch, but both of them speak English and Spanish fluently, so there are many possible ways to communicate and improve your language skills. The afternoons I often spent with them, going to the beach, chatting or playing with Lea, and I really enjoyed that. But I never felt obligated so if you are a person who likes to be more independent, the place will still be perfect for you. Apart from that I had a few beautiful walks to the beach and near the Cueva de Nerja, went into the Cueva de Nerja (which is really impressive), went to the pub in Maro and took the bike to have a look at Nerja. Additionally I had the luck to experience a local village fair in Maro where everyone comes together in the street and makes fires and music in front of their houses. If you like to kuddle cats, Zora and you will both be very happy! The place is much more than beautiful. When I woke up the first morning and got out if the tent, I got to see the green mountains on the one side and the sea on the other side, the nature there is quite impressively wonderful and so are all the different friut trees and the rich veggie garden. :)) All in all I recommend this workaway a hundred percent and I will definitely visit you again! <3

Alex and Julian! Thank you for welcoming me during the month I stayed with you. Thank you for this first Workaway experience, which was undoubtedly enriching and unforgettable. Thank you for the coffee, for showing me everything in Anadia, and especially for allowing me to care for these precious animals. My friends, as I called them. I will miss Mufin hugging me every morning, Flebag with his barking and affection, the walks with my partner Boris, Beijinboboo, Lulu pulling my clothes, and everyone else who, with their unique characteristics, won my heart and whom I will always carry with me. Thank you for welcoming and transforming the lives of these very special beings. Please forgive me for anything. I hope that with my food and talks about Brazil, I managed to show a little of my culture, as I am very proud to share it with everyone. Alex was always concerned about keeping me warm and making sure I didn't get cold. Thank you!

I don’t know how to express the incredible welcome I received in Taru from Caroline and Charles. They truly made me feel like part of the family from the very first moment. For personal reasons I couldn’t stay as long as I would have liked, but all the time I shared with them was a unique experience full of personal learning. I’m deeply grateful for those conversations with Charles, for the kindness of always accompanying us wherever we needed to go, no matter the time, and for the children of the family for being the sweetest and most welcoming I’ve ever met. Thank you as well to the teachers for letting me be part of the classroom. What I enjoyed most were the afternoons spent with the family, when they showed me their way of life and, truly, when I learned so much. You are an example of good people who, with love and care, support your children and an entire school that needs you. I hope I can come back and see how Jimmie and all the others have grown, and to see the school continue to grow little by little. I’m sending you a big hug and lots of love and good memories from Spain. For any volunteers who are thinking of going: the love they give is real, just like the love you will give to the children. The conditions are those of a rural environment in Kenya, and it’s important to go with an open mind and not compare it to where you come from. In my case, in January, the heat was sometimes hard to handle at night, but everything is manageable and the little ones will more than make up for it.

Thank you so much, Cleo and Zoe, for your kind words. Having you was truly a joy. You are both hardworking, capable, and thoughtful people, with a great sense of humor :) . You joined us during a very intense period, with truckloads of cacao arriving and what felt like endless compost-making from cacao husks — and you handled it all. We appreciated how independent you were in your work, time management, and your strong sense of responsibility. Your care for the wider community did not go unnoticed, our neighbor farms still talk about you. Your friendliness is remembered by our family and community. We are so grateful to have shared this journey with you. Wish you all the best and you’ll always be welcome back to your future holiday.

It has been a pleasure hosting Judyth. She works diligently in the garden weeding, pruning, and always leaves any area she works tidy. In the house as well she is tidy and organized, in the space she has stayed, as well as with some renovation projects. Judyth is easy going and fun, joining in with all the social and cultural activities, at the house as well as in the community. We will miss her, as well as her delicious and healthy dishes she often shared.
