Our experience with Colin was exceptional. Colin was incredibly kind and took the time to share everything we needed with us. We had wonderful discussions about our cultures, history, and life. Colin also taught us how to work the land, plant garlic, harvest seaweed, and make cider vinegar. We thoroughly enjoyed cooking and sharing the food. In addition, the music sessions at the pub with his friends warmed our hearts. Colin also helped us find work. It was a wonderful encounter, and we are delighted with this experience. We would do it again without hesitation. He also hosted us for Christmas and made us feel right at home. Thank you again and again for everything. see you soon!!!

For just two weeks in January I stayed at Liljana's Animal Shelter in Vlora. Liljana has really put her heart into the place, and while it's always going to be an ongoing project, you can feel the love she has for the animals and everyone involved in helping. The help that's asked for isn't too complex. A normal day involves feeding all the dogs, cleaning their living spaces, and then giving them lots of hugs as they go out to play. Work starts at nine in the morning, and can be completed in a few hours (especially if there's more volunteers). Extra tasks may be needed each day- like helping clean the surrounding land, or reorganising the kennels; nothing too strenuous. Honestly just giving the dogs attention felt like the core of the work, and all the dogs were lovely once you can gain their trust (which admittedly came quickly for me; I was giving belly rubs by the end of my first day). :) Liljana could do with other help beyond what she's asked for at the moment, and perhaps she can find it with Workawayer. She does a lot of things herself, and has staff, but someone that can help her taking photos for her social media or promoting the shelter would be a help. The volunteer accommodation is within the shelter, and Liljana and the staff live nearby usually. At the moment its a pair of shared bedrooms (though a third is planned), each with a bathroom. A kitchen, sitting room, etc. She's working on improving things all the time, and honestly, the living space is one of the nicer ones that I've encountered volunteering. At the shelter Liljana has her own staff and volunteers who the Workawayers help out. They're good at directing things, and made me feel comfortable in the beginning- if there were dogs that hadn't gotten used to me then Lily would help out, and wouldn't have me do things I wasn't confident in. Otherwise the shelter itself is located in Vlora, relatively close to the city centre and not much of a walk from where the bus drops you off coming from Tirana. There's plenty of shops nearby, and Liljana is keen to tell volunteers about good places to eat. Busses are frequent in Albania, so on your days off it wouldn't be much trouble to travel to touristy places. When I was there I felt like every one of Liljana's long term staff and volunteers cared about the animals, and wanted to see the best for them. They all care, and ideally that's the sort of workawayer you are as well - able to see that they're doing what they can here, and putting the animal's welfare first. I can only hope that the shelter sees more volunteers. It's a jem of a place if you're wanting to support animals that just really appreciate your love and affection. And it would be great if they could continue improving things with your help.

Sofia was an amazing volunteer and a truly kind-hearted, motivated, and hardworking person. She helped us a lot both with cleaning duties and at the reception, always being reliable and responsible in her tasks. She has a wonderful way with people and represented Latin American culture beautifully with her positive energy, warmth, and openness. Guests and team members alike felt comfortable around her, and she was always willing to help wherever needed. Sofia is very human-centered, proactive, and easy to work with. We would happily welcome her back anytime and can highly recommend her to any future host or project.

Louise was an excellent workawayer. She did a lot during her stay. She was extremely productive, duty-bound, and committed to her assigned tasks. She was always ready to lend an extra hand by extending her working hours whenever needed. She was an all-rounder in teaching, as she prepared herself for any area of teaching within a very short time when we suggested that she do so. She is a visitor any host would love to accommodate. Being friendly, sisterly, and motherly to the children very easily, she was the "angel of volunteers" for the host family. She had such a charming air that made everybody around her comfortable. I would recommend her to any family or organization at my highest level.

The experience was incredible! The atmosphere is very safe, calm, and healing. It's a vast and beautiful environment, and you can admire the view as soon as you wake up. The food was very good, plentiful, and varied, cooked by a great vegan chef! The work was very diverse and flexible: cleaning, gardening, taking care of the dogs, picking mangoes, painting, helping in the kitchen... Mari is a very inspiring and generous person. She took care of us during our stay, doing everything she could to make us feel comfortable. Beautiful encounters, beautiful moments to experience. Thank you for everything ❤️

Julie was fantastic during her time here and exactly what we needed: flexible and reliable. She took great care of the dogs, performed her duties very conscientiously, and even came back for a few days. We and the dogs had a wonderful time with her. Julie you are very welcome to come back anytime again!

Kanae is such a funny, kind person, and a true coffee lover! Always clean, tidy, and a joy to be around. We loved learning Japanese from her and sharing everyday moments together. The experience wouldn’t have been the same without her energy! You’re always welcome to come back here anytime Kanae. We’d be very happy to host you again!

I volunteered at Karuna’s beautiful super adobe home in El Nachal, Mexico—just as she described. What an inspiration! This woman pours her soul into everything she does, literally living the off-grid dream we’ve all heard about but rarely seen. Together we worked all day under that warm sun, shaping walls from earth and dreams alike. And come evening, she’d surprise us with hearty, flavorful meals that felt like hugs after a long shift. Yeah, she won’t spoon-feed you comfort, but trust me—she’ll respect you, listen to you, guide you without ever making you feel small. Truly, staying there wasn’t just volunteering… it was joining a family, if only briefly. Karuna? Absolute legend.

Hi time with Anna was great; this was my first workaway-trip and Anna was the best first host I could have asked for. The tasks were very clearly communicated and Anna always made sure that there was enough to eat and tea to drink :). It was nice to see the progress I made in renovating the garden, and whenever I had any questions or needed anything Anna helped me. Even though it was january the landscape was still very beautiful! Emilio is the nicest dog ever and I really enjoyed spending time with them both!

Salome and Finn were a real great couple to have over. They worked hard and are super professional in garden / wood / construction work. I think we all had a very nice week together. Even though their Spanish is not the best they integrated very well with the locals coming over. I wish them the best for the rest of their journey and hope to see them again some time in the future!

I volunteer with Siri for 3 weeks and that was my best experience ever in workaway . Since the day I got in her home i felt welcome, I had my own room and the work was very easy, the kids are amazing and Siri is always around and very open minded. In our time off she took us around, we watch movies together and do spa nights . I will be for ever grateful for this experience, she is the best host ever, always taking care of everyone, so sweet. Normally I use to have plenty of time to walk around or go even on other cities on the weekends.

I would like to share my experience with Arun and the lovely people around him. His place is a hidden gem — calm, magical, and truly an oasis. Communication was warm and effortless, both before my arrival and once I was there. I’m deeply grateful that I had the chance to meet these wonderful people and spend time in such a special place. I only wish I could have stayed longer, and I wish them all the very best. 🍀

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and honest feedback, Rick. I truly appreciate you sharing both the challenges and the positive sides of your stay. For me, finding the right match is essential, and I’m very glad to hear that the experience contributed to your personal growth and that our values and ethics aligned — this is the foundation for a meaningful and sustainable farm experience, exactly how I value a good match. I especially enjoyed our many evening conversations, talking about life, choices, and future opportunities. Sharing reflections, perspectives, and everyday experiences is an important part of hosting for me (when I have time), and I truly believe you have a bright future ahead of you in your academic field. Good communication is something I value highly in daily farm life. While small misunderstandings can naturally occur when people live and work closely together, I’m glad we were able to address things openly and learn from them along the way. Life on a small, values-based farm is hands-on and varied. It can be demanding at times, but also deeply rewarding, especially for those interested in sustainability, learning practical skills, and being actively involved in everyday farm life. I appreciate you highlighting the learning opportunities and skill development that came with the experience. Thank you again for your time, effort, and presence during your stay. I wish you all the very best in your future travels and projects.

Ellie is absolutely lovely, helpful and has such a bubbly and lively personality. She is very keen and enthusiastic, nothing is too much trouble and the kids loved her and still talk about her. Very easy to have around, super respectful and incredibly talented. Ellie came to us for an exchange where she painted a huge mural, which she completed beautifully. Not only did she manage to paint the mural, she also painted another smaller mural, and painted our new hobbit entrance door to the yurt tent with a realistic landscape. Thank you Ellie, for everything, we will treasure your art and our memories together forever ❤️

Matilde, Janna, Alex and all the other Workaway Team have been like a true tribe away from home in a time where, after several Workaways, I was quite needing it. The whole group bonded which clearly contributed to the overall great experience of everyone being treated with both warmth and respect which in turn lead to a great work environment. I’m also very happy that I had the possibility to participate in the closing party where I was able to meet a lot of the other community! If you’re looking for a place to stay where you can balance fun work with leisure time, look no further, this is it! Thank you for everything and really hope to meet all of you soon 🫶🏼

Working with Yassin has been a truly transformative experience. He is a rare kind of leader who guides with both profound vision and genuine kindness. His passion for the school is contagious, and he makes me feel valued and inspired. If you are looking for a mentor who listens, supports, and shares his knowledge generously, you couldn't find a better host. An unforgettable experience!
