Description
Are you looking for a travel experience that goes beyond the typical tourist trail? Join us at the academy in the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. We invite passionate volunteers to help us shape the future of bright, ambitious students in a setting where history meets heart.
As the first kingdom of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura stands as a testament to ancient ingenuity. Established as the capital in the 4th century BCE, it became a global epicenter for Buddhist heritage and education, centered around the massive Mahavihara monastery.
The kingdom thrived through a revolutionary hydraulic civilization, featuring thousands of man-made lakes (wewas) that irrigated vast, emerald rice fields. Nearby, Mihintale marks the sacred site where Buddhism was first introduced to the island around 247–250 BCE. Beyond the ruins, the landscape transitions into the rugged wilderness of Wilpattu National Park, where leopards roam ancient forests, bridging the gap between a storied past and vibrant natural beauty.
Our Story: From a Mango Tree to the Sacred City
Nearly 30 years ago, our journey began under the shade of a single mango tree in a small rural village called Mahawilachchiya in the Anuradhapura district. Today, we are based in Anuradhapura, the majestic ancient capital that served as the island’s heartbeat for over 1,300 years. We provide a vibrant, alternative learning space for children and youth (ages 5 to 30). Because our students already attend traditional public schools, we focus on "Education through Entertainment." We believe the best lessons are learned while walking, cycling, dancing, or playing sports. At the academy, the world is our classroom.
How You Can Make a Difference
We aren't just looking for "teachers"—we are looking for mentors and friends. You can contribute in a variety of ways:
Language & Academics:
Lead conversational classes in English, French, and German or help out with computers, science, mathematics, geography, and history.
The Arts:
Share your passion for singing, music, dancing, drawing, or any form of creative expression.
Sports & Coaching:
We are big on team spirit! Whether you’re a pro or just a sports enthusiast, help us coach American football, Australian football, badminton, baseball, basketball, cricket, soccer, or volleyball. (Even if you’re learning via YouTube as you go, your enthusiasm is what matters most!)
Community Outreach:
Spend some of your mornings assisting local public schools, helping us strengthen the community we call home.
Authentic Sri Lankan Living
As a volunteer, you won't just be visiting Sri Lanka; you’ll be living it.
Stay: You will be hosted by one of our students' families, offering you a rare, intimate look at local life.
Food: Enjoy three authentic, home-cooked Sri Lankan meals a day. Want to learn how to make a proper lentil curry, cucumber salad, or coconut sambol? Your host family would love to have you in the kitchen!
Balance: We ask for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. Your weekends are yours to explore. Whether you want to visit ancient temples or relax with your host family, we’re here to help you plan your perfect getaway.

Kids enjoyed the trips they went on with you in Anuradhapura and Mihintale. They were good ice-breakers for some of the shy kids to start speaking English.
Online lessons were interesting. Discussions with the on-site kids gave them ample opportunity to expand their views too.
