    Description

    Hi there, traveler!

In 2015 Sander and Iris transformed an old stone bakery from 1860 into the first indoor camping of Belgium! In 2016 they officially opened. They've done as much as possible of the construction works by theirselves, mostly with recycled materials. Our furniture comes from thrift shops, from the living room of our grandmothers, from the garage of neighbours and sympathizers, ...This is an important value that also runs through our vains: upcycle, recycle, reduce and reuse.

After 3 years, Sander started a new chapter. But don't worry: Matilde joined the team.
In 2024 Iris started a new adventure and Janna joined the ship.

As from 2024 we (Matilde and Janna) are now proud owners of this beautiful place.

You can find us in one of the cosiest neighbourhoods of Ghent, where many different cultures meet. Here, people hang their head out of the window for a talk, young musicians and artists have a place to do their thing, beer flows frequently, and everyday something (or someone) unexpected crosses your path.

Next to the hostel we have a bar, where the guest of the Hostel come to have breakfast and locals come to read the paper and have a chat. At our bar, travellers meet locals drinking a good Belgian beer while listening to a concert. It’s a place where you can as well enjoy quiz nights, concerts, markets, workshops, drawing courses and so much more. We're very proud of the cosiness this mix creates, and we invite you most warmly to come and enjoy our place!

This bar is a non profit organisation where we work with a combination of a regular staff and friends who come to help a hand when we organise an event. The profits of the bar are used to organise free events and make sure they stay free!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You'll get to know a lot of people. Everyday we have new guests passing by with all their unique stories. You'll learn all about Ghent and Belgium in general as you'll have enough time to explore!
Our slogan: Never a boring day.
We try to work together to see what tasks fit you best according to your interests and skills. You could even learn how to cook new dishes as we love to exchange recipes. You'll be free to express your creativity by creating new decorations in the bar and around.

  • Help

    Help

You'll be in charge of different tasks depending on the day.
First of all you can help us by sharing your experiences, your thoughts and stories, show people around and make people feel at home.
Next to that you can give us a hand with organizing events, like music evenings in our non profit.
There are a few general maintenance task but your own creative input in the hostel is very welcome!
If you like you can bake cakes, help us to make furniture and make our place look different/better each day.
We like to make things ourselves and upcycle.
Most of the help is needed between 11am and 1pm.
Sometimes it will be a bit longer, it depends on the project.
The rest of the day you're off.
Free days can be taken when is best for you, just discuss with us and your fellow WorkAwayz first what's possible so there is always someone around.

Workawayers would never help with any tasks at all relating to the hostel, since that is not a non-profit and we have paid staff.
Also we will never request you to do any obligatory bar help.
