It was our first experience with my friend Margaux and it couldn't have been any better ! The learning center is doing an amazing work and the kids are absolute angels! Everything is well organized, there is a planning that tells you what you will teach to the kids during the week, it is amazing to work alongside the teachers, and a great pleasure to teach the kids (for us it was English, art classes, sports) and we also gave an helping hand whenever needed, mostly for the lunch. We loved the learning center so much that we came back a second time! There is a volunteer house : the blue house, located 2 min from the school and its very nice, it allows you to spend great time with volunteers that for sure will become great friends ! Thank you so much for your work Sister Lakana, Baff, San San and all the other teachers and staff !! Mango & Lemon

I would recommend this volunteering to anyone. I truly loved the environment, the work, the nature, and the beaches of Ilha Grande! I think the only downside is the rain. Besides the humidity and the fact that it rains everywhere in the camp, the situation becomes truly unmanageable after a whole week of rain and storms. With no electricity, internet, and heavy rain in the middle of the forest, it's not easy. Anyway, at any other time of year, at least with less rain, I think it's a place with so much potential and very helpful people! Thank for everything

We were 2 and we spend such such a good time in Sweden in this fantastic family. It is so good to be able to be so close to horses with people who know them so well. Even if you don't know about life in stable (like us), you will have a passionate person who takes pleasure in explaining to you. Of course we will never forget this experience. I can only recommend you to spend time with Petra and her family if you want to learn more about horses and life in general.

Sebastian is an exuberant personality, always warm and engaging, describable as characteristically ebullient and even playful. The demands upon us during this period of our time in Uruguay were high and unusual, yet even knowing of them Sebastian was kind enough to still invite us and to work with great flexibility around our situation. He values clear, expressive communication, and we greatly appreciated that. Even when he decided not to renew our stay at the end of our month agreement, he conducted himself with decency and gave us lots of notice. Communicating with Sebastian was a good experience, and working for him came with a lot of great skills learning. The house itself is wonderful. It’s very old, and excellently captures that Montevideo architectural style; artistic tiling, high ceilings with tall doors, open windows and broad claraboyas, a winding internal structure across multiple tiers, and a great rooftop area. Sometimes, it’s full of volunteers and feels like a hostel. Other times, the volunteers quietly lead their separate lives and it feels like one of the sets of rental rooms which are often staged in these old buildings. And then, sometimes there’s no one but you there and it feels like yours. The house is set in an excellent part of town, on a relatively quiet street which gives you access to all the major attractions. Sebastian is also a candid fount of local information, which was very helpful. Of course, Sebastian has a job and responsibilities of his own, so he is often not around. We appreciated the trusting atmosphere, yet Sebastian made for good company and we were sad that we didn’t see more of him. My spouse met Leticia once and briefly, but other than that we didn’t get to know her either. As I mentioned, our situation was odd during this time. This host was gracious enough to tailor an arrangement with us, yet while my spouse fulfilled all of their hours without a problem, I was unable to get enough work from Sebastian to satisfy all of my hours in our third week and I felt embarrassed about that. Sebastian was very kind, offering to let me stop working hours altogether, but I wish that he would have granted my requests for more solo work like he gave the others. Otherwise, this was a good experience and we are grateful to this host for having us during this period of our travels.

What a place. What an experience. I feel so blessed to have found and spent time her. For nature lovers you will be in heaven. Surrounding by jungle, plants and animals. You wake up to the dawn chorus of howler monkeys and birds. Days are spent hiking or relaxing in the many beautiful spaces Ron has created. The hostel itself varies a lot in terms of volume of both guests and volunteers, though Ron is always contactable for support. You are given real freedom in terms of when and what you do here which I loved. There's no schedule, just using common sense to prioritise tasks for the day, routine cleaning and fun special projects. Ron himself is such a part of the experience, a very entertaining and generous guy with a lot of stories and great energy to be around. You will learn a lot about cooking beans and how to survive without a fridge (really useful). This place is so incredibly peaceful and special, please don't miss out on such a unique experience. ps - as a clothing optional space it worked great. Often people would get more comfortable with less and less clothing over time, but there was never any pressure. It was so nice to see and experience becoming more comfortable with naturist ways, I'm very grateful for this opportunity and miss it very much already.

Would stay again? Definitely! As two South Africans traveling through Greece, we were genuinely surprised and delighted to come across another South African, Hyde, on our journey. From the moment we arrived, it felt like coming home. Hyde welcomed us with such genuine warmth and an open heart, even though we were only passing through for a short stay. His lovely wife, June, is equally amazing. Kind, graceful, and elegant. She helped us out tremendously (as we were lacking a few essentials) and her baking is honestly outstanding (we’re still dreaming about those treats!😋) We shared so many wonderful conversations during our stay, full of funny Saffa references, plenty of laughs, and my fiancé Bruno getting everyone fired up with his rants about the state of the world🙈 Luckily, their son Joseph could engage him, otherwise I would have spent half my time trying to reel Bruno back in! The work itself was surprisingly therapeutic for me, especially after my long weeks of cycling. Getting into the rhythm of garden tasks, picking up useful pointers on homesteading, and interacting with the super cute (and surprisingly tame) hens and inquisitive cats felt really relaxing and grounding. The hens especially loved getting involved in whatever you were doing 😅 they were like little feathered supervisors! We stayed in their make shift container, which for us was a huge upgrade from camping so really grateful for a bed 🛌 and those hot showers after a long day 🚿 In the afternoons after a good days work we’d bond over the some tasty gyros (the best in Greece if you ask me) Hyde and June also gave us plenty of free time to do our own thing, which we really appreciated. The absolute highlight was being taken out on Hyde’s sailboat. As complete sailing novices, we were blown away by the experience, it was magical and one of the best memories from our whole trip through Greece⛵️ Our stay overlapped with another Workaway couple and we loved spending time with them, Hyde knows how to pick cool people!! 💪 Hyde was also kind enough to give us Workawayers a full day off to bond and explore a nearby island together 😁 an incredible day that none of us will forget. We can’t recommend them enough. They are warm, generous hosts who truly make you feel part of the family. We’re hoping our paths cross again someday hopefully sooner rather than later! Thank you, Hyde, June and Joseph and the whole crew (furry and feathered included) you made our short stay unforgettable.

I absolutely adored volunteering at Dani and Carol’s farm. It was an amazing time and I cherished everyday, as there was always something different and alive happening. It was a pleasure to take care of the animals and the land through the different tasks. Dani and Carol are great host and they made me feel very welcomed and taken care of. They were very generous! I enjoyed making wool yarn (and cotton) from start to finish and there were many other creative things we could do on our down time. It was also a great place to practice my spanish as the workers only speak spanish and you are fully immersed. You can really tell how Dani and Carol care to give us an experience and learn new things. Definetely my most precious memory from this trip in Costa Rica. Dani and Carol have a lot of projects going on and they work passo a passo. If you stay a while you are able to see the progress you made which is great to see. If you want to have an experience full of life, I totally recommend! The area is also absolutely amazing, the most gorgeous sunset and views! Ahhhhhhh I experience so much in only a month, and I am so grateful! 😌

I have had the opportunity to do a week of volunteering here. It was an awsome experience! The eco hostel is located on a beautiful plot of land. You will be surrounded by peace, great nature and animals. Adrián, Iván and all other members at the eco hostel are super kind and helpful. The work is varied and the food very tasty. Very recommended! :)

My short time staying with Santi was a very valuable and unique experience. The perfect introduction to Costa Rica and some of the amazing projects and people operating in San Jose. Santi is very inclusive of volunteers into his lifestyle, you will be invited to join not only him but some of his friends and lodgers. On my second day we went to a pizza and games night with some friends which was delicious and a lot of fun. Following this I had the opportunity to see a presentation from a project at the urban garden network, and a tour of the city from passionate and knowledgeable activists working in transport and sustainability. To arrive in a country and straight away have access to Santi's amazing network and friendships was incredible, and I encourage anyone staying with him to make the most of these great 'tag-along' trips. It's a side of things you would never get to see as a tourist. The volunteer work itself is varied and you are welcome to choose what best fits your interests. I did some gardening, building furniture, cooking and cleaning, looking after Eva the cat and helping machete some banana trees. The timing is also completely flexible, you are given a lot of freedom to build a routine that works for you (or not have a routine at all). You get time and space in the morning to yourself which suited me very well, and usually connect with a wider plan for the day in the afternoon. I loved sitting on the balcony with a coffee, enjoying the beautiful view of San Jose. The food was really delicious and I was welcome to help myself to anything or to try cooking something new. Santi is a great communicator, and there was always space given for feedback and check-ins, which I loved. The most significant highlight for me has to be the generosity of Santi with his time and resources. He was always finding ways to give access to experiences I would enjoy, and really went out of his way in my case. I will definitely return to spend time here again.

I had the pleasure of hosting Franzi for a few weeks. I’ll admit that at first I was a little worried that, given how young she is, she might not be the right fit for the kind of help we needed. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Franzi is a beautiful soul who turned out to be incredibly capable in so many areas. From carpentry and painting to fixing all sorts of small things around the house, she brought both skill and enthusiasm to every task. She’s a quick learner, a thoughtful problem-solver, and someone who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty to get the job done. If something needed repairing, she either already knew how to fix it or took the initiative to figure it out. What impressed me especially was how mature she is for her age. She carries herself with confidence, responsibility, and a great work ethic. And did you know she is a certified commercial painter? That expertise really showed. She seemed to know exactly what to do with any surface that needed touch-ups or a complete new paint job! Franzi was also wonderful to have around the house. She happily helped with everyday tasks like vacuuming, putting away dishes, and keeping the kitchen and bathrooms clean when needed. She was always willing to pitch in and made life around the house easier for everyone. Beyond all of that, Franzi was simply great company. She has a wonderful sense of humor and a deeply empathetic nature. She happened to be with us during a very difficult time when we had to say goodbye to one of our beloved dogs. Her presence was a real comfort—she was respectful in giving us space, yet quietly there when we needed support. She also became very special to our other two dogs, caring for them, feeding them, and giving them lots of cuddles. Finn, our Morkie—who isn’t normally the most affectionate dog—became so attached to her that I started getting a little jealous, LOL! Franzi was fantastic socially as well. I enjoy entertaining and love hosting potluck dinners and game nights with friends, and she fit in so naturally. Everyone who met her loved her. One of my good friends liked her so much that she was invited to their home where he taught her how to weld (a skill that Franzi has always wanted to learn). So, amongst many things, she also now knows how to weld metals! Quick learner, did I say? Franzi brought such a positive presence to our home, and I truly miss having her here. I consider her a friend for life—almost like a daughter from another mother. Thank you, Franzi, from the bottom of my heart. You are always welcome back to visit anytime.

I spent wonderful two winter months at Jessica's. It was my first work away ever and so Jessica was my first hosts ever. To sum it up: It was exactly what I had hoped for! What I really appreciated right from the start was Jessica's clear, transparent and direct communication, be it in her host description, be it in our first video call or the whole time on the spot. Everything you will find there is exactly described. Jessica provides you with explanatory videos beforehand, so you can familiarise with it and know what expects you. During my stay she was always available and open to explain things if necessary. I really enjoyed the quietness of rural life during winter time in Finland. Jessica helped me to find a pair of skis (including shoes and sticks) for an affordable price, so I could learn cross-country skiing. We had sauna once a week and Jessica showed us how to make a hole in the ice of the frozen lake nearby and we jumped into it after sauna while there were -12 degrees outside - great! My main task was heating the house, shoving snow and walking Ilona, their absolutely cute dog. In addition some little tasks like cleaning, carrying things and cooking. I was together with two Italian so we could share the work. I absolutely recommend Jessica as a host.

My first Workaway and I really liked it. David and his family are very nice people and live in a very nice location with their very sweet children. I only stayed with them for a short time because of my work back home, I definitely wanted to stay longer. I have been chopping wood and helped build a house in clay and straw, very interesting experience! I enjoyed it. Thanks again for the nice stay!

Je me suis sentie accueillis à bras ouvert!

This is my first Workaway and I had a wonderful experience at Tanja and Andi‘s family. During my 3-months stay I tried a lot of tasks which were new to me, such as helping with the chicken and ducks, preparing wood for winter, and assisting the construction work. And I learnt a lot! I also helped in the community garden where I met many nice people. Andi, Tanja and their kids are very kind people, and I felt like part of their family during my stay. I got many new insights from them, of how to live a sustainable life. I am also grateful for their support during my stay in Graz afterwards. We will surely meet again!

I highly recommend this host to any Workawayer who wants to volunteer in a hostel located between Mesopotamia and the mountains of Anatolia. I’ve stayed as a guest in more than 50 hostels. You can divide them into cosy, boring, party, romantic, or adventurous ones — like this one. But for me, there are really only two types of hostels: those that don’t care whether their guests are enjoying themselves, and those that truly do. To any Workawayer reading this, my advice is simple: always choose the second type. Huseyin and Meresher are kind, flexible, clever, and genuinely interesting hosts. I honestly hope to come back soon — as a guest or as a volunteer. I originally wanted to stay for a month, but I ended up leaving earlier than planned and without warning, although I had a good reason to leave. Still, they understood my situation better than I expected, and I’m really grateful for that. Just read the reviews about the hostel on Hostelworld or Booking and you’ll see they are great people. Huseyin treats volunteers as friends, not as employees, and Meresher cooks Anatolian dishes better than any restaurant. I hope to see you both again soon. Teşekkürler!

Fanny and Baptist were an invaluable help to us! They have a lot of experience with farming and are great at manual labor in general. We were right in the middle of the busiest growing season, and they were more than willing, always helpful, working quickly and very intelligently. In addition to being great workers, they are very interesting people with diverse knowledge and interests. Curious about everything, always participating in conversations about many different subjects and also very helpful at home with communal chores to keep the house running smoothly. They are super engaged with local agricultural systems and appreciate all the dedicated work to make it happen and to be a part of it. For us, this was amazing. They also cook very well! We definitely recommend them to all hosts, especially if you need four pairs of experienced hands to help. We wish them all the best and Bon Courage!

We had such a special experience staying with Caroline, River, their two wonderful kids, and their sweet dog for two weeks in July 2025. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed into their home and their unique off-grid lifestyle. During our stay, we helped with a variety of projects around the property. We spent time weeding and tending the garden, making sure the garden paths were covered with enough woodchips. One of the most exciting parts was getting to learn how to drive the Kubota! We got to move piles of wood and help even out parts of the land. As self-proclaimed city slickers, we also learned how to use tools we had never tried before, like a whipper snipper, and electric shears. We even helped carve out trails through the forest on the property, which was really rewarding work. Along with outdoor projects, we helped with cooking and cleaning around the house and got to spend lots of time with the kids. One of our favourite memories was a little road trip day where they showed us some of their favourite local spots. It was such a fun way to explore the area through their eyes. We also learned a lot about the logistics of living off grid and got to see firsthand how everyday tasks are accomplished in that kind of lifestyle. It was fascinating and really inspiring. Some of our favourite moments were in the garden. Picking garlic scapes for the first time (and tasting them!) was such a treat, and harvesting the beautiful lavender left our hands smelling amazing all day. The place we stayed was incredible — the tower property was so unique, and at night we could watch the stars through the sunroof. Being surrounded by birds and nature, and having no internet, made it feel like a true escape. The community in the area was also very welcoming. Early in our stay we visited a local farmers market to pick up fresh bread and spices, and everyone we met was incredibly kind. Most of all, we loved the time spent with the family. Sharing meals, swapping travel stories, and playing games together with the kids made us feel like part of the household. We even ended up buying some of the same games when we got back home because we had so much fun playing them there! The food was also amazing — the Dutch babies were to die for — and they were very thoughtful about accommodating Graham’s vegetarian diet. We are really grateful for the time we spent there and for everything we learned. It was a meaningful experience and one we’ll always look back on fondly.
