We spend two wonderful weeks at the animal shelter and are very grateful for our time there. Alice loving and open-hearted nature made us feel welcomed the second we arrived and we had lots of fun caring for the animals. We worked for 5-6 hours a day, depending on what tasks we got assigned and if everything went as planned. The work was mainly focused on feeding the animals and keeping their cages and coops clean, but sometimes we completed other tasks, like building a compost. We really enjoyed working with the animals, as they're all lovely and the work pays off when you see how happy they are. Alice was always appreciative of our work and was reachable if we had any questions. It rained quite a lot, which can make the work a bit uncomfortable at times, but never for a longer period of time and our clothes dried good. Over the two weeks, we stayed first in the wooden house and then in the big caravan, both comfortable and cozy accommodations. There is no heating and it can get cold at night, but we had multiple blankets and Alice always made sure we were warm, plus we had a nice shower with hot water and a toilet nearby. Alice provided us with basic groceries, such as pasta, bread, fruit and vegetables, yoghurt and even cookies and we could always ask if we needed something else. Additionally, Alice cooked for us almost every evening, the food was heavenly and gave us the great opportunity to taste the Italian/Sardinian cuisine :) If you love animals and like to spend time outside, Sardinia is beautiful and has a lot to offer and we can strongly recommend this place. Despite staying in the rain season, we had an enjoyable and memorable time at the Refugio. Alice is a great host, we felt always welcome, she made time for our questions and concerns, was open for lovely conversations and was thankful for our work! Thank you so much Alice and Guiseppe, for having us and for making our experience unforgettable 💕

Nia stayed with me and my family for about one month. She helped prepare food and with various household tasks. She is very patient, easy to get along with, and seems much older than she is. It was a pleasure having her.

He's a very skilled craftsman, works independently and gets stuff done. She's super nice. Both good cooks. Their son is super sweet. Nice music/sound jams with all 3.

Helene and Johnny's time with us was very unexpected. We were caught short on a task and they decided to fit us into their busy schedule for two days. They fitted in seamlessly, being very amenable, easy to host, hard working and willing. They got stuck into tasks with gusto, helped with evening meals, contributed well within our little group and were just lovely gentle and polite people. I would recommend them highly to other workawayer hosts. Thanks for coming at a moment's notice and helping out. They were only here a short time but it really did make a difference and we totally appreciated it.

It was a delight to have Charlotte and Paulina to stay and work for us and we were happy to have them join us for Christmas. They are both very hard workers and nothing was too much. They showed a lot of initiative and worked with a cheerful spirit. It was wonderful having their youthful bubbly energy here and we had some good conversations. We highly recommend them as friendly helpful Workawayers and wish them all the best in their lives ahead.

We had a truly wonderful experience with Lahcen and the entire community of Smara. From the very first day, we were welcomed with incredible warmth and generosity. We were lucky to share the experience with fellow Workawayer Mat, which made the whole adventure even more special and collaborative. Lahcen is a kind, driven, and dedicated host who genuinely cares about his volunteers and the people around him. We gave German classes in the evenings, and the students were enthusiastic, motivated, and an absolute joy to work with — every session felt rewarding and meaningful. Outside of teaching, we explored the city on foot and ventured into the desert, soaking in the landscape and the culture. We were even being invited to a birthday celebration and even a wedding. Those are memories we will carry with us forever. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Lahcen, Mat, Abdelaziz, and everyone in Smara. - Nils & Kieran

Had an amazing experience! All the staff and volunteers are so supportive and friendly and really made me valued and at home. I loved working with the children and feel that I learnt as much from them and this experience, if not more! Would highly recommend and I hope to visit again soon.

Dear Natalie this feedback is a little late but thank you for all your help in the garden. Natalie stayed with me for three weeks and was a pleasure to host. She was super hardworking; she especially loved working in the garden and making everything look absolutely stunning and beautiful. She even mastered using the lawn mower better than me. She appreciated all the spring bulbs that were coming up and blooming and enjoyed the beauty around the garden. She would often walk around to see what could be improved the next day and thank you for weeding the new camellia garden bed. And hosts please don’t judge by her petite size - she is super strong. She loved her rice with all her meals and never wasted any food. I highly recommend Natalie to other hosts. You will be glad you took her on. You are welcome back anytime and thank you for the lovely water bottle gift with the personalized embroidery you did for me. I wish you all the very best with you travels around Australia. Cheers Vita xx

Jürgen was a sheer joy to have here. He took a real interest in our lives and talked about travels with my husband - places they have both been and it was wonderful to have his input on a few things I am working on creatively. He was a real treasure. He was considerate and when he started to come down with a cold he graciously moved on so as not to pass it along to us. We would have loved to have him stay longer and were at the same time happy to see his awareness of not passing on illness. Such grace!

You know when you’re reading WA reviews and you read something like, “This was my first Workaway experience and I couldn’t have asked for a better one,” and then you actually do the experience and realize the comment was wayyyy-overrated? Well, this definitely wasn’t the case!! What a family, what a tribe. I absolutely loved Jana and Matilde: pure, uncorrupted souls, truly beautiful people. Big shoutout to the other Wayers as well, I built great connections with all of them. By the end of the experience, it truly felt like a real community. Much lovee, ciaoooooo <3333

One of the kindest and sweetest souls we have had come and visit us. She was gentle and reassuring with my husband and always willing to help out. We would gladly have her back anytime! She helped in the garden a bit, went for walks with my husband - helped him with communication and generally was a pleasure to have in our home. Genuine and Loving for sure!

My first backpacker experience couldn't be better than this! If you are reading, please, give yourself the chance to volunteer there! Mint is pure hearted, kind and makes you feel at home. She is a great teacher, a leader, also the sister you can count on when in need, indeed she treats you like one of her family ❤️ I was afraid I would not be able to teach proper to children, but with her help, also thanks to other skilled Thai teacher assistant and wonderful volunteers from all over the world I met, I could learn how an English lesson should be and I'm still gaining experiences through her advise and patience 😻 I may not be the best teacher she would had, however I'm so glad she opened the door of her community, giving me the opportunity to be one of them and make the difference. Thank you Mint! I Hope we'll meet again next year 🫶🏻

Roos is such a wonderful and helpful young lady. The perfect workaway volunteer. She was willing to lend a hand and open to learning new things. Sadly her circumstances suddenly changed and so her time with us was unfortunately cut short. Not before coming to our puppies rescue. We were both admitted to hospital for 3 days just after our puppy got sick and had to go to the vet daily. Roos became the puppies nurse and saved the day/dog :) You would not go wrong hosting Roos. She is the perfect volunteer and a joy to be around. Roos is always welcome back.

My friend Celia and I had a wonderful time at Penny and Steve’s! We arrived shortly after we had arrived in Tasmania and it was a great place to begin our journey here. They are warm and welcoming and the house is so cozy and comforting! It was so nice to find a place where we could have a fulfilling yet relaxing stay, Celia and I have been traveling around for awhile so it was nice to take a breath. They were so generous and kind to us and took care of us very well, being so thoughtful with the food they provided and giving us lots of advice on things to do and see, and showing us different places we can explore. The work was very easy and reasonable, a beautiful place to work. Their dog, Betsy is the cutest and brightened my day every time I saw her! I had a pleasure staying there, and highly recommend this workaway. Thank you for everything!

Helen arrived a few days before I left so we had time to get to know eachother and to learn all the quirky/half broken bits of the house. Gerald came a week or so later. I came home to a tidy house, lots of little improvements done . Lots of de-cluttering/organizing/cleaning up done. I think they have won the "fix the wobbly spiral staircase" award - attempted by at least 5 workawayers in the past - all good attempts that I am thankful for., but this time it feels like it won't be wobbling anymore for years to come. Communication while I was away was exactly as it should be - clear and simple. A few things came up that normally would require me being there, but Helen took care of it all like a pro. Thanks Helen and Gerald for all that you did and giving me peace of mind while I was away. Of course you are welcome back any time.

Mia and Nele stayed with us for two weeks, and although the weather was often very rainy, we really made the most of the time together. They still managed to get out for some lovely hikes, discovered our secret river swimming hole, and even had a go on the swinging tree. In their work, they were thoughtful and reliable. They always checked in if they were unsure about a task, and once started, they completed everything carefully and to a good standard. We especially appreciated their positive attitude despite the less-than-ideal weather - it was either super hot and ssunny or pouring down and stormy... They also showed a wonderfully creative side and put lovely thought and effort into contributing to our daughter’s fairy village, which was very special to see. Around the house, they were wonderfully helpful with everyday things like dishes and keeping shared spaces tidy. And a little tip for future hosts: homemade sourdough bread and Milchreis (rice pudding) definitely make them very happy 😉 All in all, Mia and Nele were easy to host, communicative, and a pleasure to have around. We wish them all the very best for the rest of their travels.

Karen and Gabriel worked with us for the entire season last year, and we are very happy to share our experience. They proved themselves to be reliable, hardworking, and genuinely kind people. Both are responsible, proactive, and bring a wide range of practical skills to whatever task is needed. They are not afraid of physical work, adapt easily to changing situations, and always show a positive attitude toward the team and guests. It was clear throughout the season that they truly enjoy working and contributing. It was also a pleasure to have their daughter Milly with us. She is an open, bright, and determined young woman who supports her parents in everything they do. She is helpful, warm with guests, and always willing to step in when needed. Having them with us felt like having a supportive and trustworthy family as part of the team. We are very much looking forward to welcoming them again next season.

I really loved my time here. This family is kind, welcoming, and fun! It was the real cultural and work experience I was looking for. There is lots to learn and do in a lively atmosphere which I loved. It was so nice to step into the wild and peace of nature again. Thank you for everything!
