the work itself was enjoyable. most days, I rode more than once. the trail rides with guests were great, through sandy conifer forests, open beach, and tops of sand dunes! the horses are all fun to ride. I became familiar with the traditional Uruguayan riding style. getting the horses from the fields could sometimes be a pain because some would not let themselves be caught. there were times I spent hours trying to catch one horse. work would usually start between 7-9am and would not end until 6-8pm. I was regularly working 10-12 hour days, which they did not inform me would be the case before I came. additionally, I had to advocate for myself to even get ONE day off a week, while their profile promises 2 days off a week. they told me by asking for a day off (in order to explore the area outside of the ranch), that I must not be happy working there, and that previous volunteers never asked for days off. this was ridiculous in my mind, as the whole point of Workaway is as an exchange. indeed, the volunteer I overlapped with for a few days at the start told me that in her 2.5 months working there, she only got FOUR days off! the casita is pretty bad. there is only one layer of wooden shingles between you and the outside, with many cracks and holes in it. it leaks when it rains. many bugs and ants would get in. a brood of big beetles appeared when I was there, and there would be sometimes over 20 beetles flying around the casita each night. also little frogs would get in, and once even a snake. they do offer a mosquito net to cover the bed, but somehow I still had beetles crawling on me at night multiple times. there is a hot shower, stove, kettle, sink, and air frier. overall, I left a month and a half early because I was lonely being the only volunteer and because I could not deal with the casita anymore after a month.

I stayed 2 weeks here and it was the most amazing work away I could imagine to find. The kangaroos literaly become your everyday best friends : they sit on the couch, ask for cuddles and make the cutiest sound when they drink their bottles. As a volunteer, the work is mainly about feeding the kangoroos, cleaning the areas and also some other little chores. Manfred's place is surrounded by luxurioux nature where you can spot many wildlife animals as possums, birds, walabis or wombats. I had a great time cooking vegetarian dishes, discovering vegan food and chating with the other volunteers around a glass of wine...or cranberry juice. Indeed Manfred has been particulary helpful and patient, as I had some health issues. I wish I could stay more in this little paradise. Thank you for the warm welcome and for the work you do for the wildlife. See you one day if I come back in Australia 🦘🫶

I'm really grateful to have had the opportunity to have met and worked with Fulmar and the rest of her family. I'm going to miss the Sierra Nevadas and am excited to potentially visit again in the future.

It was a great pleasure to have Maria with us. From the very beginning, she was attentive to the daily work routines and was able to take care of the animals independently and reliably from very early on. Maria's handling of the animals was consistent and at the same time very friendly. She also helped us with gardening, trimming bushes and stacking wood. Thanks to Maria's careful storage, we still have very tasty walnuts. We were also repeatedly spoiled with cooked or baked treats. Her most significant work was redesigning our ageing front door. After sanding and glazing it, she transformed the door into a beautiful eye-catcher with her creative skills. We would be delighted to see her again.

I had the best times at Mandfreds place. Manfred is very sweet and welcoming in his very own way, a little chaotic in moments but thats what makes it the unique experience you won't find anywhere else. He's a great musician, playing the flute and the tuba almost daily. I liked his way of welcoming many people in an uncomplicated way. I met many nice characters. Nothing was expected but everything was great with the right dose of anarchy, freedom and creativity. I hope to be back someday!

This was a very special workaway, one that I was very sad to leave. I spent a wonderful three weeks volunteering at the language institute assisting teachers in their classes and having the occasional conversational class online. I was initially a little bit nervous as I don't speak Spanish and have no formal teaching background, but it didn't matter, the teachers were incredibly supportive, and students were excited to have the chance to practice their English with a real living breathing native English speaker. Eduin was a big part of why this experience was so wonderful, he was always checking in to make sure I felt comfortable or to see if I needed anything, he helped organise excursions to nearby towns and attractions, places not often visited by non-Colombian tourists. I felt incredibly safe here, the town of Mariquita is quaint, and the locals are friendly. It can get quite humid during the day, though the apartment and classrooms are all equipped with fans. I really enjoyed the classes, the teachers are very professional, kind and passionate. The students ranged in age from three years old right through to adults of all ages. I was genuinely inspired by the hard work the students put into learning English, it really inspired me on my own slow journey to learning Spanish. The accommodation is clean and comfortable, there's a supermarket very close to the apartment and there are even Spanish lessons available to take. I really treasure my experience here and would love to come back and volunteer again, if I'm back in Colombia. I would recommend this workaway to others. Thank you Eduin for giving me the opportunity to volunteer at your institute.

Jess and James were a great help to me during a busy and chaotic time. It was invaluable to host a trustworthy mature couple, to keep up with the daily chores, look after the animals and ensure that the house ran smoothly. Many odd jobs and repairs were also sorted out and a fun painting project that is definitely one of James super talents. I enjoyed Jess and James company, they are interesting and fun people to have around. I will look forward to future fires and good conversations. And lets not forget Bailey, who is a good boy and did really well to adjust in a large pack of dogs here. Thanks J n J for all the help and support I hope ye are having Happy onward Travels. X L

The area is close to the Ostsee as well. The food is healthy and tastes good. Thank you

I forgot to leave a review when I visited very briefly last spring but it was a lovely first workaway experience! The place feels like such a special hidden gem and I had so much fun with the two other travellers that were there at the time! Thank you Eric and Russell for the kind hospitality and souveniers, I hope I can come back for longer someday :)

Johanna was such a lovely Workaway guest to have stay with our whānau. She is a young, kind, and thoughtful person who brought such a calm and positive energy into our home. She was amazing with the kids, very helpful around the house, and great at using her initiative to see what needed doing and just get stuck in. Johanna loved cooking and made some really yummy meals for us, even baking fresh bread which we all enjoyed. She helped with weeding, farm chores, and getting our house back in order after a busy summer, and was always happy to lend a hand wherever it was needed. You were such a blessing to have around, Johanna. We really enjoyed your company – especially our movie nights and even the occasional bit of terrible reality TV together! 😄 We hope you have an amazing rest of your travels. Please come and visit us with your dad when you are back in New Zealand. Much love from Jacinda, Jason, Harlem, Kora and Sonnyjoe

I spent a really good time with Elisa and Marc. Despite the unusual bad weather during February, they kept a nice energy! Open and motivated to learn, it was a pleasure to welcome them. I gladly recommend them to other hosts. I will miss them. Thanks to both for our time shared

Maddy is an amazing young lady , she tackled everything with enthusiasm and joy. Zuma loved the long walks and all the love she got from her. Maddy was a great help in the yard, organising and cleaning the garage and much more. We had fun cooking together and she prepared a delicious carbonara for us. We wish her well in all of her future travels and adventures.

This workaway placement will offer you the best of Canada. The setting offers the unusual combination of a beautiful, natural setting, with a nearby village for necessities, while being located only a very short distance from one of Canada’s top urban centres, Vancouver. The home is surrounded by trees, a lake, and gorgeous rock formations that are blanketed in moss. Inside this west coast home you will be supported with everything that you could possibly need as a house sitter and cat sitter. The food is healthy and is supplied in generous amounts. While I was there during the winter, the home was always warm. Winter is mild on their island, when compared to many other Canadian regions. You can pop down to a local café and have a stunning view as you sip your drink. The two cats are quite independent. When they are familiar with you, they will come along and cuddle, which will make your day. Both Carla and Steven are welcoming and kind hosts. They are happy for you to learn about their home and their island. Carla has a special spirit about her. I found her to be sincere and quite gracious. Communication was excellent from start to finish. You will be fortunate to complete a workaway placement at the home of Carla, Steven, Bean and Boo. Best wishes to all!

Where do I start, This was my first Workaway experience and I couldn't have asked for a better family to do that with. I spent 7 weeks over January and February, with Emma, Tony, Darragh and Cian doing a mix of house work and Au pairing. The family made me feel very welcomed from the day I arrived and tested my luck with a game of pie face Cian had gotten for Christmas that same night (thankfully I was in luck, Tony not so much). All the work that was part of the position was very fair and I never felt it was too much. Emma always made sure to check with me if I didn't feel comfortable doing any of the tasks requested and if any tasks went over the 5 hours it was sure to be taken from another time that week. As the family says on their profile their location is quiet rural so having a form of transport is very convenient. If you aren't sure what to do with your time off Emma and the family always have recommendations to give and are very kind to offer you a lift if it's on the way to their various activities. Being that I spent so much time with this family I didn't feel like it was just work, I genuinely built connections with all the members of the family including the animals Bruno (cat) and Lola (Dog). I was also given the opportunity to meet some of their extended family who are just as lovely and accommodating. Anyone who is lucky enough to get the chance to spend time with this family won't regret it. To Emma, Tony, Darragh and Cian, thank you so much for inviting me into your family and I will forever appreciate this experience with you all. I look forward to the next time our paths cross again but I have no doubt that it will be too long :)
