    Description

We are a Hannah and Ken and Mataa (dog) living on an island paradise of bush and ocean! Our 60 ha block is 100% native forest with amazing views of the ocean and mountain and backs on to DOC land in the remoter north of the island with access to the harbour at the end of our driveway and beaches from 15 mins away.

We have amazing surf, hikes and oceans accessible on our back doorstep (literally) as well as the wider island access to hot springs, pristine beaches/surf and various island community and events that will not disappoint! We live in paradise! Come experience it with us - we are well travelled ourselves (including workaway), so would love to share it with you!

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We have travelled and done workaway/wwoofed so love cultural exchange. There are many opportunities in the island to connect with NZ culture and community.
We can offer an environment where we speak slow and patiently to communicate at your pace in english if you need.
We love to learn about other cultures while sharing our own so you are more than welcome to share parts of your culture with us thru cooking or your hobbies etc!

Hannah has skills in small scale vegetable and cut flower growing, as well as trapping and native plants as well as business. She is also an avid cook and reader.
Ken is a retired fisherman and mussel farm owner, as well as builder and conservation helper, hunter and bushman and is a general all rounder. There is not much he cant do or a tool he can't use!

We hope to just enjoy eachothers company while getting some things done and ensuring you have an amazing experience of the island.

  • Help

    Help

We seek willing helpers to help around our property; primarily in our vegetable and flower gardens, general landscaping and small maintenance like lawns or scrubbar; running our extensive conservation rat trap lines in the 60 ha bush, helping harvest and process firewood, as well as assisting in building or various other projects on at the time or in our home helping clean or declutter / rearrange / maintain our things. We are happy to work to your knowledge/skills and interests also - we love exchange of knowledge and skills.

Best if you are physical and have a can do, curious nature and willingness just to do your best.

We will be doing tasks together as well as independently or you with one of us. We will always provide clear instructions and give full training where it is needed. We are safety conscious.

    Accommodation

We offer a very large and private master bedroom in our house which has queen bed, fire place, couch, its own balcony and access and great views and direct access to a shared bathroom. It is very private.

We can offer you use of camping gear should you wish to go camping or to the hut as well as fishing gear, e-bike, kyaks, surfboards etc, we also have a woodfired hot tub you can fire up on a rainy day.

We will cook you meals each working night which you are welcome to help with if you want and you can help yourself in the weekend or mix in with us. Breakfast and lunch will be either cooked by us, or 'help your self' as we together find our routine and preferences. We eat meat, vegetables (mostly from home until gardens are in full swing) and fish is caught by us. Snacks will always be available so you feel as if its your home and you have the freedom to eat what you want! We do not drink much, Hannah has the occasional wine or beer and Ken does not drink alcohol.

We are very relaxed and also understand the needs of travelling, emotionally and personally, so we are happy to gel in with you to ensure you get what you need to maintain your spirit while being in someone elses home.

    What else ...

The island 60 nautical miles from Auckland central. You must be able to get here by Ferry 4.5hrs (Sealink website) or 30 minute plane (Barrier Air.co.nz or Island Aviation).

We are based in the more remote north - Kaiaraara Bay and back onto the Mt Heale/Hirakimata hiking and huts.

Once here you can hitchhike around the island (in true island style!) or we can pick you up where possible and welcome to join us when we go out and about.

We also have a little beach cabin further down the island you are welcome to stay at during the weekends off.

There are pristine empty beaches to explore, surf spots, hiking, fishing off the wharf, you can use our ebike as well and kyaks. we will take you fishing when we go!

House rules - we are fairly relaxed and just expect maturity/respectful living offers to help wash up and people to be clean tidy and considerate.

INTERNET: We do not have alot of internet as we use our cell phone reception and unlimited wifi ,occasionally some months we hook up our starlink so your needs would need to be discussed.

Dog - we do have a dog - he will want to be your best friend for the duration of your stay and will ensure you get lots of attention.
