Our community provides a home for a small number of people with intellectual disability. We are located on a beautiful five acre lifestyle property in Lower Hutt. We are a small intentional community with diverse members, supporting and challenging each other to thrive. We are still in our pioneering stage, and largely family driven. There are opportunities to step in and make a real impact on shaping the growth of this special place.
Our main focus is supporting a small number of community members with an intellectual disability to participate meaningfully in daily life in their home and on the land. ( This involves creating a vibrant culture of social connection, music, art, land engagement, cooking etc) We are passionate about operating from a model of enablement and empowerment.
Help in the house
For interns specifically interested in the field of disability, we provide a unique model in New Zealand. As a grass-roots, family led initiative it sits outside of the usual large government funded care-models. You have the opportunity to:
-Create close and meaningful relationships with people with, and without disabilities.
-Experiences levels of collective leadership that are practiced within the organisation.
-Contribute to the co-creation of this pioneering initiative
-Learn about our enablement ethos.
For those interested in volunteering with a focus on contributing to the sustainable development of our land, we provide the chance to dig into the soil and have a play with papatuanuku! You will be able to use your skills and creativity to help us fulfill our roles as kaitiaki (stewards) of this land. We seek to develop the property in sustainable, organic, life enhancing ways, providing kai and sustenance not only for ourselves but for the native wild-life as well!
If you are interested in learning a bit more about Te Ao Maori, this is a specific interest of one of our Trustees who is happy to spend time sharing some of her knowledge about stories, native plants and medicines etc.
Our interest is primarily in volunteers/interns that would like to stay a longer time 3 months or more. If you have a working holiday visa there may also be opportunities for paid support work during your stay.
As a volunteer you would spend time contributing to our household rhythms which may include cooking, music, art, baking, walking, reading etc with our community members. The details of your daily tasks would be worked out individually, based on your particular passions and skills.
In addition, we also welcome volunteers on the land: with five acres, there is always work to be done—creating gardens, weeding, lawn mowing, carpentry, building etc. Our land manager would work wit you to choose a fitting project for your stay with us.
Room in a large comfortable communal house. Shared meals during weekdays. We strive ensure the kai we provide is abundant and nutritious!
We are located in the western hills of Lower Hutt, about a 10 minute drive to the lovely beach town of Petone, and a 20 minute drive to Wellington city.
