Luca messaged at exactly the right moment when we really needed help, arrived the next day & we instantly hit it off. She is super easy to be around & a very good self starter (I was a little concerned about her age but she showed me that doesn’t really matter!). We had the absolute pleasure of hosting her for just under two weeks, and she was a dream to have around. She took fantastic care of the animals, walked the dogs, chopped wood, and created & organised wood storage under the panera. She even built a tree platform and extended the compost bin, along with countless other helpful jobs. She worked positively, never complained, and was always willing to go the extra mile, even on longer days. She connected beautifully with the kids, who adored her—she took them swimming, drew & played computer games, really meeting them where they are at! In short, she was an absolute joy to have with us, and we would welcome her back anytime!

She welcomed us like family and made us feel at home right away. The room was amazing — honestly more like a hotel than a Workaway stay. The work was varied (pruning trees, digging out caña roots and lots of wood shredding), so no boredom at all. And the best bonus: fresh orange juice every single day from her own trees 🍊 Highly recommended!

Our first workaway and first time in South America and we couldn't have asked for a better starting point. Linda is a wonderfully kind host with a local community who support her. The guesthouse is beautiful and the views and sunsets are spectacular. The work in the morning is what you make of it, after completing the basics tasks of cat feeding and cleaning through you can pick a special project which can be anything that adds to it. We would recommend a trip here and will hopefully visit again one day.

I had a great experience volunteering at this English school. Abdelhadi is deeply committed to helping students of all ages learn and grow. When Abdelhadi is not around, Asmae, the receptionist, does an excellent job facilitating everything. She is friendly, well organized, and always ready to help. I also had the opportunity to meet the teachers, who are all highly motivated and strongly committed to helping people learn English. Their passion for teaching is truly incredible. I was able to participate in their English classes, and I learned a lot from the experience. The school is a local institution with a strong community feel, offering language learning opportunities for people of all ages, with a clear emphasis on quality teaching and personal attention. I would highly recommend this school to anyone looking to learn English or volunteer in a friendly and supportive environment. Thank you so much for the opportunity. Cezar

Ahhh, what a wonderful experience I had! From the moment I arrived, I felt like part of a family. There were eight volunteers and we shared such a great energy and connection. In the evenings, we all ate together with the guests around one big table, which really gives meaning to this place. People share, connect, and truly understand one another. The goodbyes are heartfelt. I made real friends there, and running into them again later was such a genuine joy. The managers are kind, human, and clearly passionate about what they do, it truly shows. As for the work itself, I worked behind the bar. The work/free time ratio is very well balanced. The work keeps you busy, but you still have plenty of time to enjoy the place. Of course, you need to enjoy being around people and sharing, as it is a very social environment. The food is excellent and always different, and everything is accessible: the beach, yoga, surfing… it’s all there. I can’t wait to come back. It is absolutely worth it!

Our experience with Colin was exceptional. Colin was incredibly kind and took the time to share everything we needed with us. We had wonderful discussions about our cultures, history, and life. Colin also taught us how to work the land, plant garlic, harvest seaweed, and make cider vinegar. We thoroughly enjoyed cooking and sharing the food. In addition, the music sessions at the pub with his friends warmed our hearts. Colin also helped us find work. It was a wonderful encounter, and we are delighted with this experience. We would do it again without hesitation. He also hosted us for Christmas and made us feel right at home. Thank you again and again for everything. see you soon!!!

For just two weeks in January I stayed at Liljana's Animal Shelter in Vlora. Liljana has really put her heart into the place, and while it's always going to be an ongoing project, you can feel the love she has for the animals and everyone involved in helping. The help that's asked for isn't too complex. A normal day involves feeding all the dogs, cleaning their living spaces, and then giving them lots of hugs as they go out to play. Work starts at nine in the morning, and can be completed in a few hours (especially if there's more volunteers). Extra tasks may be needed each day- like helping clean the surrounding land, or reorganising the kennels; nothing too strenuous. Honestly just giving the dogs attention felt like the core of the work, and all the dogs were lovely once you can gain their trust (which admittedly came quickly for me; I was giving belly rubs by the end of my first day). :) Liljana could do with other help beyond what she's asked for at the moment, and perhaps she can find it with Workawayer. She does a lot of things herself, and has staff, but someone that can help her taking photos for her social media or promoting the shelter would be a help. The volunteer accommodation is within the shelter, and Liljana and the staff live nearby usually. At the moment its a pair of shared bedrooms (though a third is planned), each with a bathroom. A kitchen, sitting room, etc. She's working on improving things all the time, and honestly, the living space is one of the nicer ones that I've encountered volunteering. At the shelter Liljana has her own staff and volunteers who the Workawayers help out. They're good at directing things, and made me feel comfortable in the beginning- if there were dogs that hadn't gotten used to me then Lily would help out, and wouldn't have me do things I wasn't confident in. Otherwise the shelter itself is located in Vlora, relatively close to the city centre and not much of a walk from where the bus drops you off coming from Tirana. There's plenty of shops nearby, and Liljana is keen to tell volunteers about good places to eat. Busses are frequent in Albania, so on your days off it wouldn't be much trouble to travel to touristy places. When I was there I felt like every one of Liljana's long term staff and volunteers cared about the animals, and wanted to see the best for them. They all care, and ideally that's the sort of workawayer you are as well - able to see that they're doing what they can here, and putting the animal's welfare first. I can only hope that the shelter sees more volunteers. It's a jem of a place if you're wanting to support animals that just really appreciate your love and affection. And it would be great if they could continue improving things with your help.

Sofia was an amazing volunteer and a truly kind-hearted, motivated, and hardworking person. She helped us a lot both with cleaning duties and at the reception, always being reliable and responsible in her tasks. She has a wonderful way with people and represented Latin American culture beautifully with her positive energy, warmth, and openness. Guests and team members alike felt comfortable around her, and she was always willing to help wherever needed. Sofia is very human-centered, proactive, and easy to work with. We would happily welcome her back anytime and can highly recommend her to any future host or project.

Louise was an excellent workawayer. She did a lot during her stay. She was extremely productive, duty-bound, and committed to her assigned tasks. She was always ready to lend an extra hand by extending her working hours whenever needed. She was an all-rounder in teaching, as she prepared herself for any area of teaching within a very short time when we suggested that she do so. She is a visitor any host would love to accommodate. Being friendly, sisterly, and motherly to the children very easily, she was the "angel of volunteers" for the host family. She had such a charming air that made everybody around her comfortable. I would recommend her to any family or organization at my highest level.

The experience was incredible! The atmosphere is very safe, calm, and healing. It's a vast and beautiful environment, and you can admire the view as soon as you wake up. The food was very good, plentiful, and varied, cooked by a great vegan chef! The work was very diverse and flexible: cleaning, gardening, taking care of the dogs, picking mangoes, painting, helping in the kitchen... Mari is a very inspiring and generous person. She took care of us during our stay, doing everything she could to make us feel comfortable. Beautiful encounters, beautiful moments to experience. Thank you for everything ❤️

Kanae is such a funny, kind person, and a true coffee lover! Always clean, tidy, and a joy to be around. We loved learning Japanese from her and sharing everyday moments together. The experience wouldn’t have been the same without her energy! You’re always welcome to come back here anytime Kanae. We’d be very happy to host you again!

I volunteered at Karuna’s beautiful super adobe home in El Nachal, Mexico—just as she described. What an inspiration! This woman pours her soul into everything she does, literally living the off-grid dream we’ve all heard about but rarely seen. Together we worked all day under that warm sun, shaping walls from earth and dreams alike. And come evening, she’d surprise us with hearty, flavorful meals that felt like hugs after a long shift. Yeah, she won’t spoon-feed you comfort, but trust me—she’ll respect you, listen to you, guide you without ever making you feel small. Truly, staying there wasn’t just volunteering… it was joining a family, if only briefly. Karuna? Absolute legend.
