    Description

Hello my name is Gati.Iam 33 years old. I have been teaching since 2008, and three years ago I started my private English school in my house in Karanggedong, Ngadirejo, Temanggung, Central Java.

I live with my husband Fajar and my two lovely kids Kenand and Chika, who are 5 and 11 years old. We like animals very much, in fact we have a rooster, chickens, geese, a parrot and a big catfish.

Most of my students don't have enough chances to communicate in Kindergarten and it is rare to meet English speakers in their class. For this reason, every day I hold English private lessons for children and teenagers of the surrounding area together with a group of teachers that help me. There are 5 paid, local teachers in my staff. I would gladly welcome any volunteer who is fluent in English and is willing to teach the language to the children. We are looking for someone that loves children and is comfortable playing with them.

In exchange for your help, I can offer you accommodation at my house, where I will provide you with a room and Javanese food such as gado-gado, fried rice, porridge, fried tempeh, cassava, tofu, etc.

Here you will be able to experience the life in a traditional Javanese village. Life here is very community based: you will not only spend time with my family, but also with my several friends who are always excited to show you our culture and help you explore the area. They are also very interested in getting to know your culture and show you their way of living and their businesses: a close friend of mine will welcome you at her beauty saloon!

There are many beautiful places you can visit in your free time. Near my village there is a huge Hindu temple, from which you can see the beautiful scenery of the Sindoro Mountain and Sumbing Mountain and swim in the pool from the cold-water source "Kolam Cinta". Other interesting destinations in the area are: Possong valley, the Curug Surodipo waterfall and the Borobudur Temple in Magelang, which is the biggest Buddhist temple in the world.

If you want to know more, don't hesitate to contact me :)

While living in my household you will have many chances to experience Indonesian and Javanese traditions and culture. You will be involved in celebrations or traditional performances that may take place during the time of your stay, you will taste traditional food and fruits, and you will meet many different people that are just excited to share their culture with you.

You can learn about harvesting rice. My mother is a farmer in the rice fields. On the weekends my husband helps her in the fields as well. She lives right next to my door, and I can take you to learn more about the process.

You can also visit coffee and tea plantations, coffee roasteries, a monkey sanctuary nearby and many beautiful natural places of our area (waterfalls, volcano, mountains).

Volunteering as a teacher at my home means helping the students to practice their English by motivating and training them to speak English.

During our lessons we use the "fun method" which involves organizing and playing many games with the children, in order to make them learn by doing and having fun. For this reason, we really appreciate help from volunteers that enjoy spending time with kids and having fun with them.

The usual working hours are 25 hours per week. 4 hours a day, 5 days a week is spent teaching. As for the other 5 hours, we would greatly appreciate if you could clean up after yourself as any member of the family would. This might mean helping to sweep, or wash the dishes.
