Description
I am an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher who works with 6th-8th graders (teens ages 11-14) in the United States. I adore traveling and previously lived in Sweden, France, and Spain for a total of 3 years.

I'd describe myself as playful, organized, and responsible. My hobbies include spending time in nature, baking cakes, and lifting weights. I love to laugh! I also enjoy learning new languages.

I find Workaway to be a fascinating platform that allows travelers and local community members to have meaningful, mutually beneficial exchanges. I think that this kind of partnership is the best way to travel.

My past Workaway experiences include:
- Cafe in Crete, Greece
(2021 - Prepared food and coffee drinks, cleaned, processed fresh herbs, washed lamb's wool, packaged souvenir food goods)
- Farm animal care in Agueda, Portugal
(2022 - Cleaned goat, geese, chicken, guinea pig and rabbit pens, changed water, fed animals, cleaned property)
- Organization and home help in Bourges, France
(2022 - Created new organizing systems for closets, picked vegetables, cleaned property)
- English teaching in Magelang, Indonesia

I stayed with Catherine for 2.5 weeks in her beautiful home near Bourges. Catherine says in her profile that she takes her role as a host seriously, and I experienced this to be true! She is a generous host. I felt spoiled by the two delicious meals she cooked each day, and I was privileged to sample a variety of international cuisines. She is an… read more exquisite cook, and I enjoyed eating meals and conversing together. On a few occasions, she prepared aperitifs or desserts for us. We also did several cultural activities together, such as going to the Valle de Loire to swim, to a pizza restaurant, and to an antique/second-hand shop.

Catherine is clear about the work schedule, and I found her to be very fair with the duties. I feel that she would not ask a Workawayer to do a task that she would not do herself. If there was a particular way in which a task needed to be done, she showed me how to do it first. I appreciated how clear she was, because I like to do a task well. Duties ranged from helping out with the guest apartments, reorganizing closet spaces, washing dishes before dinner, and some detail cleaning of public areas (the patios/the garage door). In addition, we also did some very fun tasks together, like shopping for specialty ingredients at local markets or hand-picking produce at a local organic farm. Each day was a little bit different.

I enjoyed spending time with the boys who live in the apartments. They were from Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, and more. We usually went down to exercise in the park each night, and I thought that this was a nice rhythm for a Workaway experience: breakfast, work, lunch, rest and explore, dinner, and exercise. The boys generally played soccer, while I worked out on the recreational weightlifting machines. They were welcoming and happy to chat! It helped that I knew French, because most of the boys speak French quite well.

Bourges is a short, 20-minute bus ride away. It is beautiful, historic, has some interesting cultural landmarks (such as the Palace of Jacques Coeur), and plenty of little side streets to wander. Because I was there in the summer, there were some fun events like outdoor movie screenings and outdoor concerts. One can also go to a movie at a few of the local cinemas.

Overall, Catherine was kind with me and gave me a positive Workaway experience. Thank you for the fun and relaxing two and a half weeks, Catherine!
