Description
Hi!
My wife Neuza and I have a beautiful old house in Galicia which we have been restoring for the last couple of years.
We have a large garden where we grow lots of different herbs, fruit, and some seasonal vegetables. We also keep some chicken and ducks.
We are located between the mountains and the sea and are surrounded by nature. Many of Galicia's most lovely beaches are near us, including World Heritage Playa de las Catedrales.
We are also situated very close to the Camino de Santiago (Saint James' Way). There are lots of walking trails, both inland and coastal and the beaches are beautiful and natural. Galicia is also famous for its food, from bread and potatoes to honey, to soft cheeses and seafood. We are on the edge of a small village and very close to supermarket, a bakery, a fishmonger, bank, and basic healthcare. Surfing is very popular in the area and there are several surf schools.Types of help and learning opportunities
Gardening
DIY and building projects
Help around the house
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Several languages are spoken in our house. Neuza is Brazilian, I am English from Irish parents and we used to live in London . She speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English, and I speak English and am learning Spanish, so it is a multi-lingual household and we are all well-travelled. We like to think of ourselves as an easy-going family who are friendly and have varied interests. We are slowly trying to lead a more sustainable way of life-producing some of our food from our garden, using the water from the well, eggs from the chickens - hopefully going solar soon, etc.
Help
We are looking for people who can help mainly with general garden maintenance (weeding, planting, harvesting, landscaping) and housework; cleaning for the most part (vacuuming, window, kitchen, bathroom cleaning, etc.).
We usually start our day around 8h30 (later in winter) and stop work for lunch. Quiet time is after 23h.
There is still some masonry work (rendering stone walls) to be finished, so if you have some experience in that, it would be great for us.
Neuza grew up in a farm and has a great deal of agricultural knowledge to pass on. We have pears, apples and lemons already well-established and have planted orange, tangerine, lime, peaches, plums, figs, pommegranite, walnut, hazelnut, chestnut, almond, blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, and more.
We are happy to receive helpers who are hands-on and self motivated. Smokers are welcome as long as they only smoke outside. We don't think of ourselves as a good fit for vegans, as we regularly eat honey, eggs, cheese and meat, and we prefer to share the food we like. We very rarely drink alcohol and we prefer that helpers also abstain from drinking at home (there are bars and restaurants nearby).Languages spoken

We offer a double room with an en-suite bathroom at the top of the house.
Breakfast is provided as a help yourself type of thing, then at lunch Neuza cooks a main meal-we eat all types of food, and then for the evening meal you can make your meal in the kitchen. What else ...
We have a local train station that connects you to Ferrol and Oviedo and bus services to the immediate area and beyond to Lugo and Santiago. There are lots of architecturally interesting places pretty close to here and several places of outstanding natural beauty.

I spent a beautiful month this summer with Neuza and her family!
Work is not very easy but the exchange fair and just. I mostly worked in the garden, above all weeding which was physically demanding but also grounding and relaxing at the same time. When the weather was bad (which can happen more than expected in… read more
São pessoas excepcionais. Só tenho que agradecer pela recepção e pelo carinho nos dias em que estive com eles. Com certeza estão em lugar muito especial em meu coração, espero vê-los novamente em breve! <3

Since the very beginning of our communication it was very simple to get in touch with Neuza and Ciaran. They replied quickly and never left a message unread. We started talking in June (almost two months before my arrival!) and it was perfectly fine. No one ever canceled our agreement even though I… read more

I couldn’t recommend them more, so go ahead and get in touch with them if they are available!
