    Description

Three of us, all female, live in a homeshare on five acres bordering forest. The bird and animal life is incredible - one of the housemates is a wildlife carer and our neighbour is a bird watching business. The peace and quiet (apart from cicadas and frogs at night) is extraordinary. The scenery locally is a photographer or artists dream, and our nearest village, Herberton, is host to some world class attractions, as is the rest of the Atherton Tablelands. It is a very special place. The project is to maintain the house and acreage in the best condition we can, as well as make improvements with plantings, an orchard (not a ground level vege garden - there is too much competition), a fire pit area and enclosures for the animals, and birds, we will be caring for.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are members of local organisations which generates some volunteer work - this can range from helping with local markets; drafting letters seeking sponsorship for the Herberton Jacaranda Festival; organizing fund raising events; manning a local craft shop, collecting injured animals and birds. Our working lives have been widely varied - retail, IT; marketing and merchandising, disability support, tourism, admin; workplace health and safety, oil and gas, advocacy and counselling - resulting in a wide range of skills. The Royal Hotel in Herberton and the Jacaranda Cafe provide a social meeting place, two of us attend Qi Gong and one a regular book club. Weekends could mean trips to local beauty spots or attractions of which there are many. The Herberton Railway and the Herberton Mining Museum would also welcome some additional hands on occasion. We are rural - hosting people from different cultures would broaden our world and provide again an opportunity to enjoy where we live when seen through the eyes of visitors.

We have a shed full of tools and equipment but don't always know the best way to do things, so we are looking for workawayers who are 'handy' - or we are quite happy to YouTube it together! There are lawns to mow (a zero turn mower is available); weeding to be done, a small forest area to be tidied up - along with lots of smaller jobs like the door of the apartment needs a coat of paint - but nothing really big. We want to do the tasks together so we can learn and share skills.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have a large double storey home built from wood harvested on the property. There is a new, one bedroomed apartment adjoining the house which has its own separate entrance and exclusive use bathroom. It has a double bedroom. There is a full kitchen, dining area and lounge and the apartment is fully equipped. The only shared space with the home is the laundry area and a large open room which has some gym equipment. We will provide food for you to prepare your own breakfast and lunch, then we can organise to have shared main meals. We hope to create a fire pit area where we can all share BBQ food outside. There is a large in ground swimming pool which is beautiful to cool off in at the end of the day (or during the heat of the day!) and, if you have an international driving license and insurance, we could also possibly organise the use of a small car if you wanted some 'me' time.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Two of us work off the property with varying shifts so we are a pretty busy household. When we are home, we relish the peace and quiet and enjoy our own space when needed. Normal house rules apply - no smoking inside the property, we are not a party house, no drug taking and everyone pitches in with the chores. We have water in holding tanks which comes off the roof or from a local stream where we have a water license, so we don't take 20-minute showers! We have a live worm septic system so are considerate of them when we do our washing and space the loads out sensibly. Transport options are limited in regional Australia which is why the offer of a car is there - and there is plenty to do and see on the Atherton Tablelands. Cairns, 2 hours and about 120 kms away, is a large tourist center with a huge range of activities.

Plenty of space on five acres, but we would need to consider location for water and power supply.

Would have to be well trained as there is a lot of native wildlife and birds, as well as rescue animals on the property.
