Description
Hello Workawayers 🙂
We are searching for open-minded and passionate people to help run fundraising events and projects for our local development foundation. Nestled just outside the busy surf town of Weligama on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, this is a peaceful guest house within nature. The guesthouse is created to help our development Foundation.
OUR MISSION:
Raising money for our development foundation. We want to help to make Weligama people 'to stand up and stand tall'. We’re aiming to do this as far as we can and in the best way possible without getting into any cultural problems.
We would love to accept caring volunteers, who have a passion for:
- Fundraising
- promoting our cooking classes
- creating new classes and events - we have established a few formats that you can base your planning on, but ask you to bring your own talents in here as well (e.g. Yoga teaching, dance classes, Art etc.)
- Helping the place to grow into a long-term sustainable guesthouse and space for community
Being here is not about working in a hostel but rather being a part of a project. It is a huge space in the rural area just behind Weligama. I have the dream of being part of the change and doing what is possible to help local families cope with everyday difficulties. Promotion both online and offline is a big part of the volunteers' work. In general, the work here is not too heavy. Here you will get a lot of freedom. So on the one hand, you have the advantage of having plenty of time for yourself and to decide when to work, on the other this requires a sense of responsibility and initiative. The only thing that I expect from volunteers is for you to put your heart into the project. If we during the time that you’re here do not have enough income to arrange events, it would be a great gesture if you’re willing to help share covering some of the costs.
We offer an authentic cultural exchange, a rare privilege for many travellers in Sri Lanka. You will be spending lots of time with the family of the place (a perfect opportunity to learn and practice your Sinhala, and to master Sri Lankan cooking!). Due to the nature of our work, we ideally prefer long-term volunteers. Having said that, we can absolutely accommodate shorter stays as well.

Current situation:
Currently we find ourselves in the more quiet time of the year where organizing events and brining people is a bit more challenging and will ask more self-initiative from you. Besides that we are currently running a fundraising to support a local family in Weligama building a house as well as making preparations for our yearly school supply donation event in December. So if you can support the fundraising for these projects, we would be more than happy too. For the next season starting from approx. November we are planning some new longterm projects in our space which involve DIY, setting up of a workspace area and eventually some renovation works beforehand. Hence there might be opportunities to support in these fields too.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We offer a real cultural exchange, you will see our lifestyle, and you will be part of our local community.
As you will be in daily contact with Sri Lankans, you will have a great opportunity to learn and practice Sinhalese, to learn to cook Sri Lankan dishes, play carrom (a mixture between air-hockey and pool), and meet our local community.Help
Possible projects:
- fundraising online for the Foundation
- event management (yoga and cooking classes, dancing shows, jam sessions, etc.) + promotion on social networks and on Weligama beach. It is especially important to keep our social media active with daily posts.
- yoga teacher: yoga classes
- musicians: perform at live events
Before you start to do any work or new projects here , please inform Janaka on WhatsApp. Afterwards, you can discuss whether it’s an idea that fits in with the rest of the things being done to raise money.
If you during your stay have any other questions, it’s always a possibility to get in touch with former volunteers.
You can also combine your online studies or online home office and volunteer with us.
Regardless, as long as you're willing to help and bring new ideas, you are welcome to join us!Languages

You’ll most likely be staying in the dorm room, where we have 6 double beds with mosquito nets. If there are no guests in one of the private rooms, you can stay there until the next guest arrives. We have a huge garden and a nice terrace, where you can watch monkeys, peacocks and big lizards.
We have space for up to 3-4 volunteers, couples are welcome. There are also 4 dogs on the premises. Whenever the mosques call out their prayers, the dogs like to sing along.
If you feel like this sounds good for you, then come and be a part of something really special. You will experience community life where people share and learn from each other.
Dinner is included on the days when cooking classes are arranged. On other days, the volunteers might buy groceries together. Breakfast and lunch are not included. What else ...
