Description
Come join a 5 acre farm in stunning central Portugal! This unique building was designed by its previous owner, an architect who poured as much love into the house as he did into the surrounding grounds, which feature a working vineyard, fruit trees, a vegetable garden, a fish pond and a small stream. As if the tranquil environment wasn’t relaxing enough, the property also benefits from a swimming pool, sauna and boules court. We’re joined on the property by some furry (and feathered) friends - 2 sheep, 10 chickens, a dog and a cat.
I’m moving to the quinta in March 2025 alongside my friend Katie, who is helping me set up this project. We're both originally from the UK and have been living in Lisbon for the past 3 years, where I've been working in the charity sector, and Katie has been studying for a masters in psychology. When I stumbled across this beautiful property 2 hours north of the city I knew immediately it was where I wanted to lay down roots, and work with a likeminded community to create a welcoming, relaxing, sustainable space.
Home to the Zêzere river, the Leiria district is known for its river beaches and waterfalls and the quinta is a great jumping off point for many scenic hikes and cycle rides - bikes are available to borrow for all workawayers. There is a great community feel to the local area with the nearby café/bar hosting regular events, music nights and workshops.Types of help and learning opportunities

I'm a musician with an array of instruments at the quinta, so we're looking forward to hosting regular jams. I'm also a circus fanatic with a passion for juggling and aerial - at some point planning on building an aerial rig to practice silks and corde lisse and host circus retreats - watch this space! We have some beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces to practice yoga.
We have bikes available to use for all workawayers to explore the surrounding area. We have basic gym equipment including a pull up bar, bench and adjustable dumbbells.
There is a great community feel to the local area with the nearby café/bar Pachamama hosting regular events, music nights and workshops.
We are always keen to learn and look forward to drawing on the culture and experience workawayers bring with them!Help
Roles for workawayers will include:
- Helping to tend to the vegetable garden
- Helping to feeding and care for the animals - 2 sheep, 10 chickens, a dog and a cat
- Helping out with some DIY projects around the house
- Helping to plant trees and bushes
- Helping tend to the vineyard and make wine
- Helping to harvest and preserve fruits and vegetables
- Taking it in turns to cook group meals
At this stage in the project we are particularly keen to welcome workawayers with gardening or DIY experience. That said - we are open to applications from everyone, and our main requirement is enthusiasm! We don't claim to be experts - so whilst we're definitely keen to share what we do know, we're also keen to learn from workawayers and create a collaborative environment.
We're really keen to make the best use of your skills, so if there is an area in which you have knowledge and experience, we can factor that in. Conversely, if there is a skill you would like to learn while you are here, we can also take that into consideration.Languages

I'm always looking to continue to improve my Portuguese, and happy to help with English in exchange.Accommodation
Depending on the numbers at the property at any one time, workawayers will have either a private room or a shared room for 2 people. Private rooms come with ensuite bathrooms.
Shared rooms are split across a ground and mezzanine level, so you will still be afforded some privacy with your own floor. Shared rooms come with one ensuite bathroom shared between 2 workawayers.
Food will be provided - workawayers can make their own breakfast and lunch, and there will be an optional group meal in the evenings. What else ...
There are multiple scenic hikes nearby, as well as forests, waterfalls and river beaches. Despite its rural setting, the quinta is only ten minutes drive (or 30 minutes cycle) from 2 small towns that serve as a hub for the local community. Pedrógão Grande features an excellent vegan cafe/bar, as well as a movement centre and. Castanheira de Pera is home to a fantastic cafe/patisserie and a delicious pizza restaurant. The quinta is also a 45 minute drive from the historic city of Coimbra, whose university buildings were said to inspire Hogwarts from the Harry Potter novels.
