    Description

    Hello everyone!

We, Katharina (34) and Gerald (37), built a home for our milksheep in 2016–2017. We started with 74 sheep, and now have 122 — and lots of stories to go with them!

We both studied agricultural and livestock science in Vienna and later took over my parents’ farm. We’ve chosen to farm organically because we believe it’s a more sustainable and respectful way to care for the land and animals.

Years ago, we travelled and did Workaway ourselves — and since we’re now more rooted at home, we love welcoming other cultures and new friends into our lives. We offer a cultural exchange that gives a glimpse into everyday life on a small family-run sheep farm. We’re excited to share how we live, work, and create.
Workawayers are joining us in our private home and garden and get to experience the rhythm of rural life and nature - everything they help with is purely part of our personal lifestyle. we're comitted to make sure no one is taken advantage of or used for business purposes.

Our main activity is making cheese from our sheep’s milk, usually 2–3 times per week. You don’t need experience — just curiosity! If you do have knowledge of farming, animals, or cheesemaking, we’re happy to exchange ideas.

You’re welcome to join us in daily life, which may include:

Visiting the barn during milking or feeding time

Watching how we make cheese and care for our sheep

Learning about gardening in our small veggie patch (we only had it for one year, so we are still learning ourselves, and we try to teach the kids the importance of growing food and caring for plants)

Taking part in family life with shared meals and conversations

Exploring creativity through small art or music projects

There’s no obligation — just opportunities.

We enjoy connecting over shared interests like food, music (we have a piano and guitar), art, and language exchange (our kids love learning new words!). Gerald is vegetarian, and we typically cook without meat, so new vegetarian dishes are always welcome.

We also encourage you to enjoy the area — we have bikes you can borrow, the Danube is nearby for swimming, and Vienna is just an hour away by train.

You’ll have a cozy private room (or two, depending on guests), your own bathroom, and access to laundry. We usually host up to 2 people for stays of 4 weeks or longer, simply because it gives us more time to connect meaningfully.

Our space is about cultural exchange and shared experiences — not employment or formal work. When we need professional help, we hire experienced workers.

Hosting through Workaway is our way of staying connected to the world and offering an immersive, hands-on view of rural life. We have had such good experiences travelling, we want to give back to the community!

    Looking forward to meeting you!

    Katharina & Gerald

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We live outside a small village, but still close to the danube and the village center (to reach by bike). If you need to go shopping, the bigger town is 15 min. by car. We have to go there some days per week to do shopping or to deliver cheese, so you can go with us. Or we can drive you to the train station and you can go e.g. to Linz, Vienna, Salzburg,... .

If you are interested to learn some german, no problem, we can speak german if you want. Or you could learn our super funny austrian dialect.

    Accommodation

So as already mentioned we have two spare rooms. We have an extra bathroom and toilet for you and also a seperate balcony if you like to spend a warm evening without us. So we can spend time together, but you are not forced to, you have your own space. And I guess after working all day together it may also be nice to have some time to oneself.

We eat together at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
If you want any snacks in between, we usually always have something at home, like chocolate, cookies, fruits, etc. The best thing would be if you just tell me your favorite things and I write them on our shopping list and we try to find them.
