Hello Workawayer!
We are looking for two volunteers with good values, dedicated, creative, and wants to grow profesionally. English-speaking volunteers from around the world.
Organized and tidy person who takes care of their living space and all the things that we provide.
Who enjoy working with children and adults aspire to help them improve their English in our school.
This experience offers an opportunity for those who are in training teaching, certificated teachers or have a positive attitude and good skills.
Someone Who can speak German or French or any other language it will helpfull.

About the area: You can go hiking in the mountains in your free time.
We have well maintained paths and beautiful viewpoints, There is alot of coffee plantions to see too.Whilst Ocotepeque is a small town, it has everything you will need here: shops, fresh fruits and vegetables, parks, gym, movie theatre, restaurants, coffee places and delicious street food! Ocotepeque is at the border of El Salvador and Guatemala, so it's easy to continue your travels from here and also travel there during the weekends.

We have so many beautiful mountains here and it is easy to access Guatemala and El Salvador because our quiet little town is located around a 10 minute drive from the border of El Salvador, and around 25 minutes from the guatemalan border. You will have fun here and it would be an amazing cultural experience for sure!

What you can do in your free time:
There are many tourist attractions in the area which volunteers often travel to, including the Mayan Ruins at Copan, Guisayote Reserva, hot springs in Gracias Lempira, the famous church of Esquipulas (Guatemala), Santa Ana there is Volcano and a lake and La Palma in El Salvador,El Pital the high mountains of El Salvador, Guanaja on the Bay Island, Roatan, Utila ,Yojoa Lake, Pulhapanzak waterfalls and more. Also the mountains around Ocotepeque are nice to hike in. Make sure to bring adequate shoes for this (hiking shoes).

How to get to Ocotepeque:

The nearest airport is in San Salvador, El Salvador (El Salvador International Airport Sait Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez). From there you have to take a bus ($0.60) or Uber to the busterminal de oriente. And from there you take the bus 119 which costs $1.70 and gets you to El Poy (border of Honduras and El Salvador). The bus leaves from 4am to 5pm approximately every 30min. In El Poy you walk across the border and take another bus (15 HNL) or taxi (20 HNL) to Ocotepeque.

From San Pedro there are regular buses – including the Sultana and Congolon. Make sure you tell the company you are going to Ocotepeque and NOT the border.
If you come from Guatemala you will need to get the 'Rutas Orientales'. This route goes through a small town called Esquipulas. From there you can easily get to the border of Honduras and then to Ocotepeque.
Also In Guatemala there are alot turist places like Antigua Guatemala, Río Dulce, Panamá chelines, Atitlan Lake.
Once you have confirmed your place I can send you the google maps location.

The town has private and public health services. If you have your own world traveling insurance it will be helpful.
As a woman make sure to bring a supply of hygienic products, because they are hard to get here.

When you enter to Honduras you are going to have 90 days in the CA-4 Central America area. After the 90 days you can extend your visa.

This bilingual school run by Ana and Carol was my first stop in Central America, and I think it was the perfect place to start with such a positive experience. I can only… read more recommend everyone to do the same.

In the mornings, I worked in the kindergarten, which opened in September, so at the beginning there were not many children. Over time, however, it grew, which was very nice to see. I helped the kids with their drawings, played Lego with them, helped them with their merienda, and took part in circle time with them. Most of the time everything was in Spanish, but during circle time they also learn English songs and stories, and they get some English input during the tasks they do.
After kindergarten, I received delicious food from María (she helps with the household). Most of the time she cooks typical Honduran food, so you get to learn a lot about Honduran cuisine. :)
After lunch, I prepared the English lessons, which take place from Monday to Wednesday from 3–5 p.m. The first hour is with beginners and the second hour with intermediate to advanced students. Each class has about 6–10 students.
Twice a week, I taught German in the evenings. So if you speak German and would like to teach classes, I think there would be some interested people. I also heard people talking about wanting to learn French, so teaching French classes might be a possibility too.

Working with kids can be exhausting sometimes, haha, but I still enjoyed it a lot. And in the kindergarten, you are never alone – Ana is always there to help you and answer questions.
The afternoon classes were fun too. The students are older (9–30 years), and most of them are eager to learn. Be prepared to listen to a lot of jokes and an incredible number of questions, haha.

In my free time, I went for walks with Ana and Carol, went to the gym, visited nearby cities with friends, went hiking to waterfalls and hot springs, met up with friends, or just relaxed.
It is not necessary to speak Spanish, but it is helpful for the beginners’ class and also very, very helpful for making friends and talking to people in town, since most of them don’t speak English.

The room was great. It is very big, and you can watch beautiful sunsets. :) You also have a kitchen and a bathroom (without a shower). The shower is downstairs in the school, so you can only shower when there are no kids. However, you can sign up at the gym and shower there too (there is even hot water!! :) ). The Wi-Fi in the room is not very good, but downstairs in the school it works well.

All in all, I am very grateful for the experience that Ana, Carol, and María offered me. I learned a lot about Honduran culture, whether it was food, language, traditions, or how life works there.
Ana, Carol, María, and all the other wonderful people I met there – thank you so much! I miss you and am really looking forward to seeing you again! <3

I volunteered here for six weeks, from February to March 2020. It was an excellent experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys experiencing new cultures and working with children. I’m very grateful to Carol for the opportunity.

The school – the kids are from kindergarten age up to 18. The class sizes are very small but the… read more kids can be quite loud so be prepared to get interrupted a lot! However please do not let this put you off, they are motivated and keen to learn. I really enjoyed teaching them, even though I had limited teaching experience beforehand. Timetables and lesson plans change at very short notice but as long as you’re relaxed and flexible this shouldn’t be a problem for you. As school finishes at 12.40 every day you have plenty of free time.

The set-up – we lived in a volunteer house which was one block away from the school and Carol’s house. Carol and her family are very kind and welcoming and will help you out with anything you need during your stay. Rosita’s food is delicious and healthy and the portions are generous!

Volunteer house – this is spacious and comfortable by Central American standards. Each room has an en-suite bathroom and we had reliable high-speed broadband. Occasionally the water cut out for a few hours but it was quickly fixed each time. Whenever we needed the house to be cleaned we asked Carol and she sent someone round.

The town – Ocotepeque is a small-ish town surrounded by mountains. It is small enough that you can walk everywhere, but big enough to be able to buy nearly everything you might need. We went and sunbathed in the park every afternoon and as we were the only foreigners in town we had lots of chance encounters with locals who came up to chat to us. The local people are friendly and kind, although if you are a woman you may get stared at whilst walking in the street (although no more than in many other parts of the world). It feels very safe, although just to be careful I tried to stick to the main streets when I was on my own.

Activities – we joined Genesis gym across town. There is a cinema around the corner called Colicinema – follow them on Facebook to find out what films they’re showing. We attended the Iglesia Bautista in Sinuapa, which is about a 20 minute walk away. They gave us an incredibly warm welcome and we went on some really fun and interesting trips with them. We also went on a couple of hikes with Carol into the mountains, which were beautiful.

Learning Spanish – you will teach in English (if you teach the older kids) but if you would like to learn Spanish you will have plenty of opportunities to do so with the friendly people you bump into, other teachers and Carol’s family.

I arrived through San Salvador and thereafter spent about two months with Carol and her family in Ocotepeque. The small town that is located right at the border to El Salvador and Guatemala is very safe. In contrast to… read more the overall rumor of Honduras being dangerous, the city is really a nice place to stay. Walking around in the night, going for a run in the morning or napping in the park: none of those options ever brought any danger to us. The city is really nice and quiete. There is not too much to do. But it has everything you need: some grocery stores, a park, two gyms, a small football/basketball court, artificial courts, churches etc. Luckily, I never had to use medical assistance but I saw some pharmacies as well as doctors.

Besides the nice town, the family and the entire Hondurian societe is very warm, welcoming and friendly. Ocotepeque was a great start for us volunteers. We were welcomed very quickly and warmly. The Hondurians were always willing to help us, chat with us in Spanish and were very interested in us foreigners (there is barely any tourism there). If anyone is looking for a language and culture exchange, he/she is going to find it there.

The school life itself is also very relaxed. The kids are very nice and fun. They really like us foreigners and are interested in learning English (most of the time; they are still ordinary school kids). The daily life is also very relaxed. We tought every day between 8 and 12:40 but most of the times had large enough breakes to even go to the gym. School itself is a quiete relaxed environment and you will find lots of freedom in how you want to teach. Sometimes the timetable changes on short notice and you have to be able to act spontaneously and embrace a large part of the Latinamerican culture: a different perception of timings and plans.

After school we had the delicious local food provided by the family and the rest of the day was off. We usually spent 3 hours in the park or went with some friends we made their to pick mangos, sugar cane processing or to church. We also went to hike the sorrounding moutains, made short trips to smaller villages in the mountains by motorbike and car. The very flexible time schedules usually also enable very well to do weekend trips. We went for instance to Copan Ruinas, which are a must.

Overall, deciding to go volunteering in Ocotepeque is a great choice!

My experience here was eye-opening and truly amazing. This trip was my first time traveling out the U.S. alone. I was anxious about safety, as well as my ability to communicate with others due to my very low level of Spanish speaking skills. But from the first day I arrived I was welcomed by Carol, the other local teachers, and the 2 other… read more volunteers who took me under their wing and showed me around the small city of Ocotepeque, relieving me of many of my worries. The media unfortunately inaccurately portrays this country. Although it is important to always be aware of your surroundings, Ocotepeque is a VERY safe city. Not once did I feel in any kind of danger.

However, keep in mind Ocotepeque is also a very small city. It is not a tourist spot, and there is not many things to do within the city. The teaching duties end around 1:30 every day, but there is a local refugee shelter down the road who are in desperate need of volunteers (it serves immigrant families and children traveling through Honduras on their way to Mexico/U.S.) I strongly encourage future volunteers to make friends with the locals. Jorge (the son of one of the teachers) plays soccer/futbol on weekly basis and welcomes anyone to join them. Victor the security guard across the street loves meeting new people, and often stops by the house to chat, which will inevitably develop your Spanish skills. There are many tourist attractions "close by" (about 6-8 hours) and relatively easy to get to by bus (Antigua, Mayan Ruins, Lake Atitlan).

As far as the actual school, I was surprised by the students levels of English. Despite my inability to speak Spanish I was able to effectively communicate with all my students. Carol welcomes volunteers with all types of backgrounds and does not necessarily require teaching experience. Keep that in mind and be aware that there will not be a lot of training. There are books, one teacher book with corresponding student work books, provided for each class. You have the option to just stick to the work book which pretty much spells out the lesson plans. For aspiring teachers this is a great opportunity to be creative and test out different lesson plans, projects, practice classroom management and grading. Be patient with yourself and the students. PLEASE follow through with your time commitment, however long it may be. When volunteers leave early it is the students who suffer.
