Description
Hello!
I started my travels a few years ago after volunteering for Operation Wallacea on a biodiversity project in Honduras. We were completely off grid; spending time outside studying insects, reptiles and amphibians, bats, mammals, habitat and birds. Following this, I used workaway for 6 months travelling through Central America, volunteering in a variety of environments and meeting many lovely people. I worked in hostels cooking breakfasts, cleaning rooms, checking in guests and organising social events. I helped out on gardening projects and also taught English at a school in Honduras.
I graduated from University in June 2022 with a first in BSc (Hons) Psychology. I have now been lucky enough to receive a scholarship to complete my MSc (Res) at St Andrews University. This will be life changing for me, and I am very excited, (albeit nervous) to return to the academic world! I am interested in the interaction between wildlife, people and the environment. I am particularly interested in primate cognition, and comparative and evolutionary perspectives. I have studied spider monkeys in their natural habitat in Calakmul, Mexico and am now planning to continue my studies working with Japanese Macaques in Scotland.

More details about your skills
My work as a gardener taught me valuable skills in horticulture and growing vegetables. Working in a team, we planted seeds in modules and transferred them to the ground in our kitchen garden. We were able to supply the kitchen with organic fresh vegetables daily. It was a joy to nurture them and watch them grow. We maintained a large 70 acre estate abundant in wildlife, plants and trees. Work in the winter is a bit different to the growing season. I have experience with and and am confident working with maintenance tools such as leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers etc. I also enjoy using power tools however am not as confident with all of these. I’ve done some green woodwork, such as splitting and chizzling and joining to make a natural woodland gate. I still stay in touch with my colleagues here, and occasionally return to do some more woodworking!
I know a fair amount about tracking UK mammals and have really enjoyed monitoring the local wildlife at work. I have assisted in setting up camera traps and also bat echolocation detecting devices to identify different species. In Mexico, I developed valuable skills collecting scientific data in challenging conditions. I enjoyed the experience so much that I volunteered again in 2023 at their other site in Honduras. I led mammal tracking surveys and taught others about how to collect and store data, and why it is important for biodiversity monitoring.
I have a good amount of experience working in hospitality. I was an assistant manager at my local pub, and am confident speaking to customers and leading a team. I have also been employed as a cleaner in private homes and office environments. I have worked as a sales assistant in retail during peak season, and as a picker in a supermarket. I have also helped (and enjoy) painting and decorating houses.
I currently run my own pet sitting and dog walking business locally, and have been for over a year. I have a loyal client base, and am trusted by individuals to take care of their pets and home whilst they are away.
