the Myanmar Institute is an alternative college education program in Taunggyi, Shan State where each year 30 youth aged between 18-30 years old come together at our school to immerse themselves into an holistic educational approach.
Our 30 students represent 3-4 religious groups as well as 15-18 different ethnic groups. They study with us for 12 months in Taunggyi various courses such as any subjects of the social sciences, the arts, yoga, soccer, music, and farming. After their 12 months, they go on to complete the program with a 3 months internship in small communities around the country, sharing what they have learnt with other youth.
Our students are between 18-30 years old, thus similar ages of many volunteers, so volunteers would be able to spend time and share experiences from youth of Myanmar.
Our students are from various religions and ethnic groups, they come from all over the country, some from places foreigners are not allowed to go due to conflicts. This would be a great way for volunteers to learn about the real stories of the country outside the façade of the popular tourist destinations most foreigners go to.
Our students are eager to learn so if volunteers come as a teacher, volunteers will have the gratifying experience of helping other human beings with new skills and a better future.
The basic help - volunteers can come for a week or two and simply stay with us taking part in various activities we organized, spending time with our students and sharing about their lives which would help our students practice their English skills. Volunteers staying for a short period could also organize a workshop of 2-4 days (topics to be discussed during application).
The longer help - volunteers would stay for a full 14-week term teaching 1 or 2 art related courses (dance, performance art, photography, yoga, storytelling, spoken word poetry, other ideas are welcome).
The big help - volunteers would stay for an undetermined period of time where they would help with our new project. We have recently bought an 8-acre land about 30 minutes outside Taunggyi where we plan to move the school in the near future. First, we would need help in securing funding and second we would need help for building the campus.
The accommodation is located less than a minute walk from the school. Its free. It is a simple room with 2 beds. Toilets and shower are outside the room. The boys and some staff live in that compound. There is a kitchen with all the necessities to cook (the school kitchen is also available to use for cooking). Pillows, blankets, tables and chairs are offered as well.
Taunggyi does not have many 'famous' sightseeing. However, it is surrounded by mountains and a beautiful countryside. If volunteers can ride a motorbike, we have plenty to borrow (or along with staff and/or students to drive you around) to visit outside of Taunggyi. Inle, Kalaw, Kakku, Loikaw, Hopone, Pekon and Pindaya are all under 3 hours drive and beautiful places to visit.
For simple relax time volunteers can go around the city with students, sitting in tea shops discussing about life and more. We also often have late night fires at the boys' hostel talking and playing music.
