    Description

We are located in a remote village called Kunr in District Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. It takes approximately six hours by road to reach us from Dharamshala. The village is also roughly a five-hour drive from Kangra’s Gaggal Airport/Dharamshala Airport and the Pathankot Railway Station. Chamba serves as the closest town. There is one daily long-route bus service from Dharamshala to Kunr. Our family consists of three members, including my parents. This serves as our summer residence, which we run as a homestay/BnB to promote tourism in our ancestral village. I also run another homestay in Palampur, which is close to Dharamshala, and since I rotate between the two locations from time to time, most of the volunteers are offered to ride along, which is a suitable option to reach this place depending on the circumstances.

In addition to hospitality, we are also experimenting with new agricultural and horticultural practices. We have recently added a small kiwi orchard (we’ve taken one harvest so far) and are growing experimental asafoetida under the guidance of a bio-research institute, as the crop is not indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. We also grow seasonal vegetables every year.

So, many times throughout the year, help may be required for upkeep on the farm as well—planting, weeding, basic maintenance, and assisting with ongoing projects.

Our village, Kunra, is home to the Gaddi tribe and nomadic Gujars. It stands as one of the oldest villages in both the Chamba district and the Indian subcontinent. The Shiva-Shakti temple here, dating back to the 7th century AD, has been recognized as a protected monument by the National Archaeological Survey of India. Students from various disciplines, including Archaeology, Anthropology, and Geology, frequently visit this area for research purposes.
According to local belief, the Pandavas from the famous epic Mahabharata resided in this village during their exile, giving it the name Kuntapuri, derived from their mother Kunti. For an unparalleled cultural exchange and an experience steeped in ancient heritage, this location offers a unique atmosphere distinct from the contemporary culture of the plains.

    Help

We’d love to connect with volunteers who enjoy any of the following:
    • Wall art, graffiti art, or other forms of creative expression
    • Social media marketing, photography, videography, or drone cinematography
    • Assisting in day to day activities, in the homestay or at the farm/kitchen garden.
    • Help with community development initiatives — if you have prior experience in this area, we would be happy to explore it together. We are open to learning and growing as a community.

If you can fit into any of these roles and don’t shy away from getting your hands dirty, you’ll feel right at home here. We value people who are proactive, flexible, and genuinely enjoy creating memorable experiences.

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!
