Hi,

My name is Lora. I am a digital design graduate and hobby photographer, who felt burned out due to long hours in front of the screen for years during my studies, work and the pandemic.

Currently I am on my gap year, where my focus is spending time in nature 🌲

I am looking for projects in nature (outside urban areas), related to nature, nature preservation, horses, yoga, silence, harmony, creativity, artisanal crafts, foraging, farming, agriculture, dogs, plants, animals, meditation, spirituality. ✨

During this year I want to experience slow living and learn how the people/projects I join sustain their life close to nature. I would like to get inspiration on how to design my life going forward and be able to sustain it.

My long term vision of life leans toward van life and cabin in the woods somewhere in Scandinavia. I hope during this year of volunteering via workaway to meet likeminded people and share amazing experiences together. ☺️

I stayed at Cat & Alex's farm for a few weeks in February. The nature around their farm is absolutely stunning, it's located right next to a big lake, which freezes during winter time and is perfect for hikes or snow mobile trips.

I spent the entire month of June in Magdalena's family village, which has without a doubt become my favourite village in Sweden. The beauty of the nature there is out of this world and all members of Magdalena's family are super kind and hospitable people. ☺️

The weather in June was much better than I expected, we had many days with 25-26… read more degrees, it was very sunny and nice most of the time and some days we had cloudy and rainy weather, which felt quite needed due to the strong sun during the rest of the days. We experienced very beautiful sunsets and amazing midnight sun. ☀️

The work I had to do was easy and enjoyable. Everyday I was in charge of taking care of the dogs (the family has 9 sled dogs, which are all super friendly and nice) and the 2 rabbits. I was also taking the dogs out for hikes on the trails near the village. All dogs are very energetic and are super happy when you take them out in nature, we had some fun times together. Also Puma (the family dog) was tagging along during many of the hikes. 🐶
Somedays Magdalena also asked me to help in the garden - I helped establish Aila's new garden (the daughter of Magdalena), also we helped her Mom - Gun in her garden and some days I was working in the garden of Magdalena, which is very beautiful and she grows so many plants and veggies in there. I was surprises by the speed all plants grow during the midnight sun.
A few days I helped with some small maintenance projects like leveling the floor of one of their saunas, or sorting and organising the inventory of the kitchen.
In general I enjoyed all tasks I was given and had plenty of free time everyday to enjoy the breathtaking forests on the peninsula and the surroundings. I also saw some wild animals in the area, which was always very magical experience for me. 🌲

In terms of food - Magdalena and her mom - Gun, are some of the best chefs I've met in Sweden. Both of them cook fabulous dinners, always super delicious and varied meals. Magdalena also bakes amazing bread and cakes. I absolutely fell in love with her strawberry cake 😋

I feel very grateful to have had the chance to meet Magdalena's family. Her kids are also super fun and nice to hangout with. Some days we played games, watched a movie or went on a boat trip. I enjoyed seeing all different terrariums Aila made during my stay there and look forward to seeing how her cute hobby develops later on. Sending hugs to the whole family and hope to see you again one day 🤗

I went to this plaxce for two weeks and ended up staying 5 weeks. To be honest I would have stayed even longer but I had a flight prebooked to another country and plans with friends. But this place is so magical that I think it will be in my heart for a long time. ☺️

The work was varied, we were a few volunteers at the same time so we could choose tasks that we like doing and split them between each other. In general the work is around the cafe, which is super fun to work in; around the camp cleaning and prepping tents/rooms for guests; a bit of garden work and some ad hoc or creative projects here and there. We were also given flexibility in terms of working days and hours, which I liked a lot as this allowed us to make plans with friends and travel/explore when the weather was nice.

The food was great too, we were provided wide variety of organic, good quality food and we could cook/eat whenever it fits our routines.

I liked the accommodation as well, I had an entire caravan for myself, which was great. Other volunteers were also accommodated either in a caravan, a room or a tent - depending on availability in the camp. In general there was a really nice balance between spending time with the community and having privacy to rest, read a book or whatever you feel like.

The nature was mesmerizing, I personally fell in love with the nature in the camp itself and the surroundings in the whole island. The camp has a very good, positive energy all around and one can witness breathtaking sunsets every single evening. There is a rich bird life too and one of the best things was that you can see the stars at night as there is almost no light pollution so you can see the Milky Way, different star constellations and enjoy the magic of the sky. ✨

Some evenings we lit fire (in the camp there are designated places for fire), popped pop corn directly on the fire, baked fruits and what not. There is also sauna you can lit and use when there are no guests using it.

There are also bikes you can borrow and explore the island, or go to the beach in your free time.

The only negative thing was that at the end I was offered to do a few hours of extra work, which they offered to pay me but for some reason it took them quite a long time to settle that and I didn't feel good to be put in position where I had to ask/remind them a few times. At the end it was all settled but I feel like it was unnecessary to drag it so long.

Other than all was perfect and I am grateful for having the chance to meet Anna and Johan and to be so inspired by their project and the nature there. 🌅

During my time traveling around Denmark I received message invite by Annette and Martin twice - once they wrote me in July and then again in August. I was always busy with other projects but finally at the end of October I had a couple of weeks free and decided to join them.

The food was good, the products they buy were organic and Annette cooks… read more really good. They always bought fresh veggies, cheese, milk and other good products.

The best thing was that during my stay there were 3 other workawayers in that project and all of them were amazing people. With some of them I became good friends and we still keep in touch.

However in terms of communication and the way Annette and Martin were treating all volunteers was not so good. Frequently they would make a problem about some of us leaving or organizing things in the kitchen/house in the wrong way. They shouted at us a few times, also said that we were doing all the work in a wrong way. In general nothing we did - be in the volunteering work, or anything around the household - was good enough. And even if that was true, I think there is a more constructive way to communicate this and take an approach towards solutions instead of criticizing and yelling.

The work we had to do was a bit monotonous, but it was easy. We had to plant baby onions, which they would later harvest in the spring.

In terms of accommodation - the first few nights I had to sleep on a couch in a common living room as all 3 rooms for volunteers were busy. Then I moved to the first room that got available after 1 volunteer left. There was mouse living in the room, which was not so nice. We saw some mice in the living room and bathroom too. The last few nights one of the other volunteers let me sleep in her room as that was the only renovated room and had a few beds inside, there were no mice there (as the room is a bit separated by a hallway from the rest of the house), which was great. The bathroom in the house for the volunteers doesn't have a shower and has only cold water. So we had to use shower in the other house, where Annette and Martin live. It's a bit cold when you have to take shower in the cold months, and also in that house is a smoking area so it smells a lot of cigarettes when you go for a shower.

The surrounding are beautiful, there are bikes you can borrow and ride around. We went a few times to the closest town of Kerteminde with the other volunteers, and we also visited a few nature places around.

Åsa wrote me in July to invite me to join her Workaway project. I had marked myself to be in Sweden at that moment as I was traveling around Sollefteå with a group of friends, and as I had a few days after the group trip available, I agreed to join her project.
I stayed in her place only for a few days. When I arrived there her assistant showed… read more me my room, which was in an old house. Åsa wasn't there as she wrote me in WhatsApp she had to go to the hospital, so she wasn't in the property at all the first couple of days.
Her assistant showed me part of the garden with big weeds, which needed to be removed and that was my job for all the days I stayed there. It wasn't an exciting job to do but at least I could do the 5 hours of weeding in a flexible schedule, which I appreciate.
In terms of food her assistant left some stuff in the fridge of the old house where I had to stay, it was mostly frozen meals. The closest supermarket is in Näsåker, so one needs to keep that in mind in case they want to buy their own food. There were no bikes to borrow while I stayed there, so one has to either walk or ask people around for a ride.
My last day of the stay I met Åsa and we had a juice and fika together. She seemed like a kind person. I also met her 5 dogs. It was also an open house day for her old house (where I was staying) as the house was up for sale, so there were a few families looking at the house on that day.
On my way to Åsa's project my friends (with whom I traveled around Sollefteå with the days before) drove me to her place as there was no public transport in the area at that time. Åsa promised me that on the way back one of her friends would drive me to Kramfors as I had to take a very early morning train from Kramfors towards Copenhagen (1000km ride). But on the last day in the evening she wrote me in WhatsApp that the car of her friend broke and as there was no other option, I had to use taxi. This was a bit stressful to happen at the last moment. So one needs to keep in mind that transport options are quite limited or non existent, especially in the early morning hours. As there is no one with a car at that property one has to rely on taxi or walk.
During my stay there were no other workawayers at the project. Around her old house there were a few people who were renting spaces for tents as during that time there was a big festival - Urkult happening close to Näsåker.
The surroundings in that region are very beautiful, there is a lot of nature and calmness around, which I like very much. And there is a lot to explore if you like hiking, forests and nature. 🌲 I would say it's a blessing to experience this kind of remote areas but would be great if there are bikes or someone with a car when one needs to do grocery shopping, or needs to go to train/bus station.
