Description

Hi I'm Olivia, or Libby as my english cousins like to call me :) I recently finished a clinical psychology degree and as much as I think therapy is a field I'd like to work in someday (mainly using gardening as a way to help people, and more specifically kids), I really need a break after 8 years of intense university studies. I am quite litteraly craving to get my hands on some DIY handyman odd jobs and crafts (which I love doing in my free time, such as cooking, clay moulding, drawing, jewellery making...) and leave my brain at home to rest for a while, until it's ready to get back to chaotic adult-lifing. I love being outdoors, taking pictures of plants and small insects or just mindlesly walking, looking up at big fluffy clouds (one of my many obsessions). I like moving my body around, whether knees deep in dirt, otter swimming at the bottom of a pool, jamming on my drum kit or dancing along to some sick 70's funky groove. To sum it up, I'd say I'm an optimist caring & creative being, who enjoys and looks out for the small seemingly mundane things in life, whether it be through my deep appreciation for nature & great outdoors, art or meaningfull conversations with strangers and loved ones !

I'm certainly not bad in the kitchen, I love to come up with odd pairings and wacky recipes (mostly vegetarian-pescetarian these days) which often turn out quite tasty (and somewhat spicy, if you ask my mum). Besides eating and cooking, I can spend ages talking about food, as it is expected of your average frenchie gourmet. Having a younger brother and a significant experience as a babysitter, I'm quite good with kids, whom I genuinely love to play with as if I were one of them. I have never had any pets but would love to have a dog someday, so I'm comfortable being around cute animals to cuddle, walk and play with. I love gardening, as it is something I used to do with my grandad and continue doing with my mum, helping her maintain her lucious balcony. However I'd love to learn more about plant species I have never heard of, or gain more knowledge about different gardening/agricultural techniques such as permaculture, beekeeping, floristry.... I only have basic skills in the carpentry, painting, building department, but I’m really eager to learn more and get better as I’m quite persistent and definitely not lazy — I sure do like a good challenge ! I can also help around the house with kleening, dusting, general tidying and small repairs.

Apart from learning new skills in the agricultural/gardening/DIY area, I'd love to learn new arts and crafty activities you enjoy doing and get a glimpse of your own hobbies, may they be crochet, knitting, pottery, floral composition, playing an instrument, 3D printing or even stop-motion animation (which I am quite fascinated by) :)

I spent a little under two weeks at Astrid and Jorge's home last February.
Things I particularly enjoyed about this stay :

I stayed with Emmi and his lovely family for 2 weeks and a bit last May.
Even though it was a pretty short stay, I still had the chance to meet the whole gang (Emmanuel, Tina and their two kids, Emmi's parents, other siblings and nephews as well), spend quality time with them and share nice conversations over tasty food :)
I stayed in a little … read more caravan, quite warm during the day but very cozy at night. Lunch was often made by Emmi's mum Hermine, but we also got to pitch in once or twice to help out. Cooking was mostly done in the common area (little kitchenette that wwoofers use to make their own meals in the evening/morning + a few seats to chill, read a book...). Although food was not provided, the shopping costs are taken care of by Emmi who reimbursed me for everything at the end of my stay.
Work was totally manageable and the different tasks around the garden were varied from day to day (mulching the strawberry patch, feeding and collecting eggs from the hens, weeding around the vegetable patch, mowing the lawn, sorting wood logs, reinforcing the mushroom-growing installation, mending an old tarpaulin ready for a small get together with the local permaculture group of Hall Emmi is a part of).
When we weren't working, we had plenty of time to ourselves to just chill or go out exploring Hall and its surroundings (such a quaint little mountain village !), as we only worked in the mornings (9-13 roughly + tea break at 11) and sometimes after lunch for a couple of hours if anything needed finishing.
As Emmi liked to spend time with his family once work was done for the day, I would definitely recommend this stay to people who enjoy spending time alone, take advantage of their free time to travel and visit cool spots in Tirol. However if you're quite family oriented like me and Hermine and Gottfried (Emmanuel's parents who live next door) are around, they'd be more than happy to take you along with them in their daily adventures, show you around and let you in their little cozy laid back life. I had the best time with both Hermine and Gottfried who are two gentle, caring, loving, passionate souls. Hermine was kind enough to treat me to ice cream during our chill walks around Hall, showing me the best spots in town, going to church with her for Pentecost Sunday (beautiful church and splendid choir/orchestra !), simply chatting away in the lovely garden (so many luscious rose bushes !) or cooking together (still thinking about that yummy cheesy omelet !). I was lucky enough to share really fun and deep conversations with Gottfried about exotic plants, psycholgy and so many more subjects all the while visiting a glacier, the very cool horse farm he works at or simply having a drink at Hall Psychiatrisches Krankenhaus' cafe.
On the weekend I was able to come along and enjoy fun activities with the Schmolz family, whether that was splashing about in the local outdoor pool with the kids Mitty and Cleo or spending the day tree climbing with one of Emmi's nephews to celebrate his birthday with his friends and family. I also got the chance to go on several bike rides during my stay including a lovely ride along the river to Innsbruck.
All in all it was a really pleasant stay in the Tirolian region, very lucky to have stumbled upon such an open-minded, welcoming family, who have put so much work into the beautiful house they have managed to build for themselves (with the help of other workawayers over the years) and ambitious permaculture garden project that I hope Emmi and his siblings will enjoy keeping alive and thriving for many years to come !
