I don't know where to begin as this place and people stole my heart. I stayed with Jamie and Mike for 3 weeks and loved every minute of it! They are kind, supportive and made me feel like home, very grateful that we met and spent this time together. The place itself is so cozy, beautiful and right on the water. In your free time you can use kayaks, paddle boards, volunteer bicycles , do yoga on a deck or just chill in a hammock. The tasks can differ but nothing too complicated- laundry, cleaning, painting the rooms and deck, cooking. We also did some fun projects like cutting fish from the wood for decorations of the room and then painted them all together. Also painted a few mandalas around the house on the pots and a sign with the name of the hotel for the water front of the house. It was really fun to do! I will miss this place and people! Thank you for making me feel at home away from home! :-*

With Maren, Gerhard and Levi I had a great first workaway experience and a really good start of my travel. I felt very at home and comfortable, since they are absolutely kind people and always ready to help. It was pleasent, spending some time with them and I don't have anything negative to say. The house itself, aswell as my room (and bathroom), was beautiful, but the best about this place is, that it's so close to the beach (~30min by foot). With the amount of work I had enough time left to explore the beatiful nature every day or just enjoy some solo time. I liked my tasks, but still it's sad that due to him beeing sick, I couldn't spend much time with Levi. I totally recommend Maren, Gerhard and Levi, I would come back myself!

Mats and Julia stayed with us as volunteers and quickly became part of our daily life. They helped us in everything – cooking, cleaning, and taking care of our child with kindness and patience. They were always ready to help and worked with a happy heart. They are also very good at communicating, which made living and working together very easy and comfortable. Their positive energy brought a warm feeling to our home. We really loved hosting them and sharing our time together. We truly hope their further travels will be amazing and full of beautiful experiences. We would happily host them again anytime and strongly recommend other hosts to welcome them as well. They are wonderful people.

Kathy and Srya came to our home as volunteers, but very soon they became part of our family. This beautiful mother and daughter brought so much kindness, love, and happiness to our home. They helped us with cooking, cleaning, planting, harvesting, and caring for our animals with a happy heart. They also spent wonderful time with our son Adrin and cared for him with so much love and patience. Seeing the bond they made with him touched our hearts. Their presence made our home warmer and full of positive energy. When they left, it truly felt like family saying goodbye. We will always remember them with love and hope to welcome them again one day. They are truly amazing humans. ❤️

Thorsten and his neighbours were very welcoming from the very beginning. Whenever Thorsten had time, he showed me the surroundings of this beautiful place, which was truly a gift. Thorsten is very appreciative of the work people do and always shows genuine gratitude. It was the perfect mix between doing tasks and having time to discover the nature in the area. I also really appreciated our conversations and discussions, which were interesting and inspiring. Thank you Thorsten for the amazing experience in Bäckefors!! I’m happy for everyone who gets the chance to visit this place.

I worked for about a month, washing dishes for the restaurant and occasionally helping with housekeeping tasks. I liked the job it was very easy going and whenever I didn't know something I was kindly shown. I received my own room which was really nice. The hotel is cosey and Manuela and Wolfgang are kind good people, they even helped me to see a doctor in the local town. My Workaway colleague were also very friendly and great. I highly recommend this place for someone who likes rural life.

We had a really lovely experience hosting this family. They stayed with us for a couple of days and were incredibly helpful and understanding. We had just moved back into the house, so everything was a bit chaotic and messy, but they were very relaxed about it and happy to help wherever needed. It was also really beautiful to see their family dynamic and the way they spend time together. Having them here actually motivated me a lot and brought a really positive energy to our place. We’re very grateful for their help and the time we shared, and we would happily recommend them to other hosts.

It was a really enjoyable and fulfilling experience. The family is so warm, and the environment is very welcoming. Teaching Chinese there was a joy. We also had great fun cooking local traditional food together. Thank you for the great time and delicious meals. I made lots of memories and would definitely recommend this place!

It might sound exaggerated but Shawn and Jane are one of the most giving persons that I have ever met in my life. They are generous with what they have and are willing to support everyone to have their time to do ski/snowboarding while working with them. That said, quality of work and responsibility to help out the lodge is expected, which is fair and reasonable what you expect for a common adult will do.The stay itself doesn't feel like a workplacec but a community where everyone helping out each other out. I hope everyone who see this and got to work with them treat them well with respect and gratitude. You wouldn't regret working with them!

We stayed at Canon de Blanco for one month (minimum stay). The ranch is in a wonderful setting, next to the river, at the bottom of Sierra Nevada volcano, with mountains all around. It has hot water pools and the river to swim in. The deal was 5h a day for 6 days a week. The work was mostly painting fences, picking up rocks and building/clearing up a bike trail. Often we had to be driven up the valley in the morning for some jobs, and when that happened they were always late to pick us up, so the shifts actually lasted 6 or even 7 hours. Up the valley there was no signal, we didn't have a radio so we couldn't communicate with anyone, so we just had to wait on the side of the road not knowing when we would get picked up. There are many horses and we were very happy to work with them, we felt we were experiencing real chilean countryside life. We had one meal shared with the rest of the workers there, that was very nice, and two meals that we would cook for ourselves. The housing was sometimes shared with some of the clients; it didn't have hot water, but there were hot showers a few minutes walk away, across the field. In the whole valley there is no signal, but there is wifi at the restaurant/reception area close to the hot pools. We chose this workaway because we were very interested in the horses and in the farm life; one of us had a lot of horse experience and the other one was still learning. We couldn't ride the horses on our own (as it was cited in one of the other reviews), we would saddle up the horses, prepare them for the rides and guide rides with the clients (together with the third volunteer that was there) because it was the only way to ride them, but that wasn't considered working time. The shifts started at 8am; you wouldn't know what your job would have until the same morning, this lack of communication and planning was a bit tiring after a while. Cristian was nice and it was possible to talk and express concerns with him, he was always up to tell a nice anecdotes about the valley, show us the local fauna, and tell us about the hiking trails nearby, but he's also very busy managing the whole ranch, so he isn't always around. We had some tension with the rest of the employers: they all repeated a series of rules with us that became stricter and stricter the longer we stayed. We were staying in the rustic lodge that sometimes also had clients staying, with a shared kitchen. After the first week, we got told that we couldn't use the kitchen of the lodge anymore, but a smaller one in a shed in front of it, that consisted of a sink and 2 camping stoves (way too small for 3 people to cook, barely 2 of us could stand in it). We had to insist to still use one of the shared bathrooms in the lodge, instead of the bathroom of the shed, because it was too dirty. It didn't seem that any of the clients were bothered with our presence (and very rarely they would use the common kitchen), and the insistence of the workers for us to not use it, and their continuous asking us if we left it clean and tidy (when we always did), was insistent and sounded quite patronizig. In terms of food, the lunch was prepared for us and shared together with all the people working there, that was nice. For breakfast and dinners we would get some basic food bought for us to cook with. Throughout our stay we had some problems in getting enough supplies; Cristian was the only one doing the groceries, and later on we discovered he wanted us to send a list at the start of the week, so that we would get the food at the end of the same week, or at the start of the next. This though wasn't clearly communicated to us, and we ended up having to ration a lot of our food to make it last because we didn't know when the next grocery would arrive. Anyway bring your own snacks and condiments, the food is pretty basic. We also got told by Cristian that for some things we could ask in the restaurant (eggs, bread, tomatoes) but most of the time when we asked, they told us they only had enough for the clients and they couldn't give it to us, or they would give us a very small amount. If we told Cristian that we still needed the things, he'd ask why we didn't get it from the restaurant... there wasn't much communication between the parts. Around the second week we discovered there was an infestation of fleas: the two dogs and the cat were covered in them and we found ourselves covered in dozens of bites, caught them in our clothes, in our sheets, and in the couches in the living room. We told everyone right away but we soon discovered that nobody really cared, and we wondered if they even believed us. We were given a bottle of insecticide and we had to insist to get more of that when that finished. We had to change and wash our sheets multiple times, do regular checks of our clothes and beds, and take great attention to stay away from the pets, which were very cuddly. We kept being covered in itchy bites for the rest of our stay. Cristian told us he'd put some spray on the animals a few days after that, but we kept seeing fleas on them. Evidently the locals didn't get bitten as much as us, so nobody was bothered about it. A week and a half later we received a message on the groupchat telling us to "always keep the door closed because the cat had entered the lodge, and some clients had complained about fleas"... they didn't believe us until a client complained, and then tried to accuse us of letting the cat inside. We also perceived often that we would receive a different treatment because we were two women, while the third volunteer, that was a guy, was much more taken into consideration. Another one of the workers showed explicitly sexist behaviour towards us, when we worked at the bike trail up in the valley he would try to force us to work separately "because we were talking too much", he kept asking the third volunteer "if we were really working", he told one of us that the rakes we were using "were too heavy for us to lift", and told us to shut up while we were in his car. In the last days his behaviour was openly adverse against us and that was very upsetting. We told Cristian about those behaviours, he said he would talk to him, and when Cristian was present the worker would behave normally, but that wasn't always the case. Three days before we left we got told we had to move out of our room, because they booked it for clients, and we got moved to the room in the shed, where usually one of the workers lived, that was full of his clothes and personal belongings. We received the message at midday of our day off, when we wouldn't be back until late in the evening. The rooms was dirty, the mattresses in bad conditions and didn't have sheets (and of course, had fleas), so we had to prepare them late at night, after returning from a long hike. The way they just moved us around with very little advance and communication really upset us, and left a bitter taste in the memory of our stay. Overall we enjoyed our stay, the place was wonderful, we really experienced the gaucho life, we did a lot of work with the horses and explored the many hikes around the area. There were also many apple trees in the garden of the lodge, we often collected them to make jam and baking. We know that a workaway is also about adapting to the culture and the ways of living that you encounter, certainly it's hard to manage every detail on such a big property, and we didn't expected to be pleased and revered on everything; but the treatment from the people working there was quite upsetting after a while, and we were ready to leave at the end of our stay. We wrote this long review not to accuse anyone, but just to be honest and specific of the things that happened. Thanks Cristian for our stay!

Maeve is such a beautiful soul. She entered our house and brought so many colours into the frozen landscape. She brought the red the colour of joy. She brought the blue the colour of peaceful, down- to- earth energy. She brought the yellow the creative, the humour, the play. We connected immediately and used all the colours to bring more light into our everyday life. Maeve was an exceptional workawyers . Lena and Jaś, the two completely different kids, they both adored her and she's officialy on their list of their favourite workawayers. And I feel the same. Every task she got she put her heart in it. Even the mundane taming of the chaos of our storage became something more than that. And it's not only work that counts here. Everything that our days were made of was entwined with this mindful, peaceful, beautiful aura . I feel so grateful for these two weeks when Maeve was part of our family. And I do hope our paths will cross again.

I spent a little over a month here and I absolutely loved it! Gertje is really great at making people feel at home right from the get go. Aken is such a lovely town, and she was always happy to show me around and go on walks by the river. Dessau is a short bus ride away, and it’s really cool as well! We visited the Bauhaus school and I was able to learn a lot. I also got to visit cities like Leipzig and Berlin, and she gave me some great recommendations of where to go. I’d say she’s a local expert, but really she’s an expert at too many things to list. The house, for example, is coming along really nicely, and I wouldn’t have believed one person could do all that if I hadn’t been working alongside her. We spent most of our time renovating the downstairs kitchen, and it was awesome to see the progress we made. Though she never let me work more than 3 hours a day and insisted on breaks in the garden, we got a lot of work done- and it was really fun to do! After work was usually mittag essen (aka lunch), which she made herself and was always very tasty. I had the opportunity to learn some German, and she was very patient with me even as I butchered the language. The cats, Leo and Fips, are two very sweet boys. Leo will do pretty much anything for a treat, and though Fips is really shy, once he warms up to you he’s very loving. They’re absolutely adorable, and I guarantee you can’t stay here without falling in love with them. Overall, this was an incredibly peaceful and pleasant experience. Gertje is fun to talk to, and she’s dedicated to making sure her guests enjoy their stay. We watched movies and played board games together, and I never worked alone. Every day around 3 is coffee and cake time, which is definitely a tradition I’ll be bringing home with me. I absolutely recommend staying here to anyone who can. I really loved my time in Aken, and I’m so grateful to Gertje for providing such a great experience.
