Description
We are a small family living in the mountains of northern Portugal. Our home is surrounded by forest, stone terraces, water streams, and quiet nature. It is a peaceful place, but also remote, so the people who come here need to enjoy simple mountain life.
We are Mit and Kateryna, living here with our 16-month-old son. We both work from home. Our focus at the moment is restoring the land, preparing new garden beds, improving irrigation, and slowly renovating different parts of the quinta. The land is large and there is always something to build, clean up, organise, or maintain.
We are looking for one or two people who enjoy being outdoors and appreciate a calm environment surrounded by nature. Typical help is connected to daily life on the land: gardening support, preparing beds, clearing terraces, light organising work, helping with meals, and general household support.
Time with our son is optional and not the main focus. If someone naturally enjoys small children and it feels comfortable for everyone, sometimes keeping him company for a short moment can be part of daily life, but only if it fits well for all sides.
We do not offer paid work. We already hire local babysitters and tradespeople when needed. The Workaway exchange here is about sharing daily life in a peaceful place and helping us move the homestead forward.
We offer a simple private apartment under the house, home-cooked meals, and a peaceful place with mountain views. We sometimes enjoy board games or shared dinners, but we also work many hours, so you should enjoy quiet evenings and some independent time.
People who feel happy here are usually those who enjoy nature, practical outdoor tasks, and contributing to a developing homestead at a relaxed pace.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We live in a small mountain village in northern Portugal, surrounded by forest, rivers, and old stone terraces. Life here is quiet and simple ; full of nature, local traditions, and friendly neighbours who still make wine and olive oil the traditional way.
We enjoy sharing this way of life with others. We can show you the area, walk to the nearby waterfalls, visit small local markets, or just enjoy evenings together cooking and talking.
We both speak English, Dutch, Ukrainian, Russian and basic Portuguese (and a bit of other languages too), so there’s a chance to practice and exchange. Mit has experience in horticulture and greenhouse cultivation, and Kateryna loves cooking and natural living, so there’s always something to learn or share around food and plants.
What we love most about hosting is meeting people from different backgrounds and hearing their stories. It brings fresh energy to this quiet place and helps our son grow up surrounded by kindness and diversity.
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
We are mainly looking for help with light outdoor work and general household tasks that support the daily rhythm of life on our mountain property.
Typical help can include:
• assisting with the vegetable garden
• preparing or maintaining simple raised beds
• clearing terraces or paths
• moving soil, stones or branches
• basic tasks related to irrigation setup
• simple wood-related tasks such as sanding or treating boards
• general organisation, cleaning, or helping keep shared spaces tidy
• occasional help in the kitchen if you enjoy cooking
All tasks are kept within normal volunteer level and do not require professional qualifications.
We do not ask volunteers to replace tradespeople. Any specialised or skilled renovation work is done by local professionals.
We like to match tasks with what volunteers enjoy, so there is room to choose according to your interests.

We love language exchange! Between us we speak English, Dutch, Portuguese, Ukrainian, and Russian. And a little german, Italian, French. And we’re always happy to practice or help others learn. We are both slowly improving our Portuguese. We both speak a bit Italian. Mit speaks a bit of German and French. And Kateryna is from Ukraine, she speaks Ukrainian and Russian languages fluently. If you’d like to practice any of these languages, there’s always a chance for friendly conversation around the table or while working together.
Accommodation
We offer a simple, cozy room with a comfortable bed and everything needed for a peaceful stay. The room is in a separate apartment under our house, so you’ll have your own privacy and space to rest.
We provide 1 evening meal and a warm lunch or sandwhiches every day, usually home-cooked and based on seasonal ingredients. We often cook together; Kateryna loves making soups, stews, and traditional dishes, and we’re happy to adapt if you’re vegetarian or have specific preferences.
Breakfast we can discuss personal preferences.
There’s reliable internet, warm water, electrical radiators and a wood stove for the colder months (November - March. Our home is surrounded by nature, so you’ll wake up to birds, fresh air, and mountain views.
If you like camping, there’s also plenty of space on the land to pitch a tent and enjoy sleeping closer to nature.
We live simply, but comfortably; if you enjoy quiet, clean air, and good food, this is a very peaceful place to spend time.
What else ...
We live in a remote mountain area, so life here is peaceful and quiet. There is only limited public transport nearby (2 or 3 times per day the bus goes from our street), so it’s easiest if you have your own car or get a rental car at the Porto airport (affordable outside the summer holiday period).
The nearest larger towns are Castro Daire and Arouca, each about 35-40 minutes away. Viseu is about an hour’s drive, and Porto Airport is around 1 hour and 45 minutes from us.
On your free days, there’s plenty to explore — beautiful hiking trails, river swimming spots, and natural parks perfect for rafting and canyoning. The area is full of waterfalls, clean mountain river (Paiva) and forest paths with amazing views.
We live simply and appreciate a calm, respectful atmosphere at home. We don’t smoke indoors and enjoy quiet evenings.
It’s a good place if you want to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience real mountain life in rural Portugal.
