    Description

We are a small family living in the mountains of northern Portugal.
Our home is surrounded by forest, water streams, and quiet nature — a beautiful and peaceful place, but also quite remote. We have a 14-month-old boy who is very sweet, curious, and loves company.

We (Mit and Kateryna) work from home and are renovating our place step by step. We have an apartment next to the house that we plan to restore, and we’re always working on small projects around the land.

Because there aren’t many people nearby, it’s hard to find someone to help with our son. That’s why we’re looking for a kind, responsible person who enjoys nature and children, and would like to spend some time with us.

In exchange for your help, we offer food, accommodation, and a quiet environment surrounded by mountains and rivers. It’s a good place if you like simple living, walking in nature, and being part of a small family’s daily life.

We are flexible about schedules and are happy to adapt depending on what you’d like to do or learn while you’re here.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We live in a small mountain village in northern Portugal, surrounded by forest, rivers, and old stone terraces. Life here is quiet and simple — full of nature, local traditions, and friendly neighbours who still make wine and olive oil the traditional way.

We enjoy sharing this way of life with others. We can show you the area, walk to the nearby waterfalls, visit small local markets, or just enjoy evenings together cooking and talking.

We both speak English and Portuguese (and a bit of other languages too), so there’s a chance to practice and exchange. Mit has experience in horticulture and greenhouse cultivation, and Kateryna loves cooking and natural living, so there’s always something to learn or share around food and plants.

What we love most about hosting is meeting people from different backgrounds and hearing their stories — it brings fresh energy to this quiet place and helps our son grow up surrounded by kindness and diversity.

  • Help

    Help

We’re mainly looking for help with childcare and light household tasks.
You would be assisting Kateryna in taking care of our son.

Our son is 14 months old — he’s gentle, curious, and loves being outside. We’d love someone who enjoys spending time with young children, playing simple games, going for small walks, or just keeping him company while we work.

Sometimes we might ask for a little help around the house, such as preparing simple meals or tidying up.

We also have a garden and are building a greenhouse, so if you like cultivating your own food or learning about growing vegetables, there’s space to join in and share ideas.

If you enjoy being outdoors, learning by doing, and being part of a small family’s rhythm in nature, you’ll probably feel at home here.

We’d like this to be an easy-going experience — sharing meals, stories, and daily life together in a peaceful mountain setting.

We are both slowly improving our Portuguese. We both speak a bit Italian. Mit speaks a bit of German and French. And Kateryna is from Ukraine, she speaks Ukrainian and Russian languages fluently. • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We offer a simple, cozy room with a comfortable bed and everything needed for a peaceful stay. The room is in a separate apartment next to our house, so you’ll have your own privacy and space to rest.

We provide three meals a day, usually home-cooked and based on seasonal ingredients. We often cook together — Kateryna loves making soups, stews, and traditional dishes, and we’re happy to adapt if you’re vegetarian or have specific preferences.

There’s reliable internet, warm water, electrical radiators and a wood stove for the colder months (November - March. Our home is surrounded by nature, so you’ll wake up to birds, fresh air, and mountain views.

If you like camping, there’s also plenty of space on the land to pitch a tent and enjoy sleeping closer to nature.

We live simply, but comfortably — if you enjoy quiet, clean air, and good food, this is a very peaceful place to spend time.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We live in a remote mountain area, so life here is peaceful and quiet. There isn’t much public transport nearby (2 x per day bus), so it’s easiest if you have your own car, but we can often help with pick-up or shopping trips when needed.

The nearest larger towns are Castro Daire and Arouca, each about 35-40 minutes away. Viseu is about an hour’s drive, and Porto Airport is around 1 hour and 45 minutes from us.

On your free days, there’s plenty to explore — beautiful hiking trails, river swimming spots, and natural parks perfect for rafting and canyoning. The area is full of waterfalls, clean mountain river (Paiva) and forest paths with amazing views.

We live simply and appreciate a calm, respectful atmosphere at home. We don’t smoke indoors and enjoy quiet evenings.

It’s a good place if you want to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience real mountain life in rural Portugal.
