Description
Very important.
Your requests to stay with me are not going into my mail box. Instead they’re going into my junk mail which I don’t get to read often plus I am not tagged. I have lost so many lovely Workawayers through no reply as a result. I have tried to correct it to no avail. I can’t post my direct contact details here but you can find me on Facebook too ( ask for my profile link)
Dial up on Facebook my name. Sharon from Cooktown. Only one there is.
I am a mature owner of a small farm with horses, pigs, chickens, Guinea fowl, ducks and cattle. Most rescued. I can’t say no to an animal needing an urgent home. My farm is in the bush and it’s off grid relying on solar energy. I am between two rivers. The iconic Endeavour River which flows out to the wharf of Cooktown and then onto the coral sea. And the pristine Isabella Creek which is my back border. Previous Helpx and workerwayers have said it’s quaint and rustic and fabulous. I have free wifi and a full Telstra service from a Telstra booster. Telstra is the only phone service you should have when you’re travelling as it gives the most coverage. I have two wood fired cooking stoves whose ovens bakes the nicest breads and cakes plus the stove makes delicious meals. The stove also gives us endless hot water. But I love firing up an outside camp fire at night and watching the flames while listening to the rain forest night sounds. Plus looking at a million stars.
You must tell me your eating preferences as we will be 30 km from the main supermarket and 15km from the local Indigenous Community store. Sorry I can’t cater for. vegans. If you don’t eat red meat, that’s ok but I do cook fish, eggs and chicken. I can with encouragement cook vegetarian meals.
I go into town for supplies every few days and there is a lovely little store just down the road that serves fab coffee and eats as well as essentials.
I would love help with the feeding of my critters, helping me muster my cows into the yards for attention, cuddling my dogs, collecting eggs and helping me tender to my over abundant vegetables garden plus grooming and tending to my horses. There is also the odd building something project on the go I would love help with.
Looking forward to welcoming you to my piece of paradise.

I am patient with limited English speaking volunteers and I am willing to help people learn good English.
I can also teach visitors about the different plants and weeds in Australian pasture paddocks and the value of feed and which hard feed is the most beneficial for Australian farm livestock.
I can especially teach you about chickens.
Help
A mornings work, either helping maintain my house or helping me feed and care for my farm animals.
You must love all animals including chickens, dogs, pigs, cattle and obviously horses.
My farm is off grid with a wood stove for cooking. So wood needs to be collected as well as my farm animals need feeding.
Some days and nights I need to go to town to tend to my other town property and you will be required to stay on your own, safe with my maremma dogs to feed and lock up my chickens.

Accommodation
I have a farm cottage with rooms. Plus a caretaker cottage but that’s not always vacant. I have my own room seperate from the house.
I also own a cottage in the township we can stay in on the odd night.
What else ...
Cooktown is a place of natural beauty. It's full of old buildings, surrounded by beaches and there are miles of walking tracks to explore. . I have 67 dogs, mostly rescue dogs that love cuddles, being bathed and brushed, especially after being taken for a walk down our beach. But 3 of these are maremma dogs that keep me, the occupants and the farm safe at night. So when feral pigs are about, or any other suspected threat, they bark.
It would be great for you if you have your own car so you could explore so many of our local attractions.
I have recently bought a cottage in the township and when all the chores are done which includes locking up the chickens at 1800 hrs, we can drive to town for the night and stay in my Beautiful home. It even has air conditioners. On your day /s off you can stay there on your own.

Can host families

Can host digital nomads
This host has indicated that they love having digital nomads stay.

Space for parking camper vans
Can accept any size camper van but should have they’re own power as I am solar myself and it wouldn’t power a van parked away from the house.

Small well behaved dogs allowed but they cannot chase chooks plus they wouldn’t be safe if caught by my Maremna dogs.

She is a very welcoming, generous and nice lady, I'm very gratefull for her trust in me to take care of her animals. There's a lot of work to do there, but it's never been too much and I had a lot of free time to visit Cooktown and the area, which is really nice!
Thank you Sharon for hosting… read more
