We are a 25 year old Japanese farm and animal ranch. We are working on expanding our ranch to be a completely sustainable Ranch to board horses and other animals. We are developing this farm into a future horse ranch. We also have a restaurant, a shop, and a grill.

Learn Japanese, business and work ethic. We can teach you about horses, how to train them, and how to ride. If you are experienced with horses we feel we can always learn more about them. We are trying to become a fully sustainable farm and would love to show people this process. We have mostly Japanese staff so it is a good opportunity to learn Japanese as well. If you come in the winter you will be able to experience, possibly, the snowiest farm on the planet. We have found that the more effort people put forward the more they gain out of the experience.
This host offers accommodation and payment.

We are outside working on a mountain side. The weather can be very extreme. Please be prepared and able to work in these conditions. Unprepared people will not be accepted.
Currently we need some help around our farm next to a ski resort near Otaru Japan. Helpers will help out with animal care, gardening, trail maintenance, painting, cooking, serving, and cleaning. We often have unique projects underway that you can help out with such as creating new dams, building new animal housing, fencing, building yurts and tree houses and natural baths etc.
We are located in a difficult spot to reach in Hokkadio. We are ask that you take a bus to the nearest hotel.
Please note this bus needs to be booked at least 3 days in advanced.
Alternatively, many volunteers and staff hitchhike their way to us too.
We have a variety of departments and depending on weather and what events we have going on the work will vary on a daily bases. We often need the most help opening and closing. Our departments include; farm animals, activities, shop, grill, soft cream, cafe, restaurant, development, landscape and maintenance.
An example day (depending on your interests and aptitudes) would be something along the lines of:
Daily animal feeding and grooming (about 1.5 hours per day)
Horse trekking preparation, pony rides, and horse training and maintenance plus trail maintenance (day to day hours vary on clientele)
Help in the restaurant or the grill (2-3 hours per day)
General help around the farm (1-2 hours per day)
Please be aware the hours vary and need to be flexible due to the nature of the farm and the accompanying businesses (cafe, pizzeria, soft creamery, grill and shop).
Additionally, all residents at the farm are rostered and rotated on to help with general living chores such as cleaning staff areas, helping to cook staff meals (with the chef), helping to clean up after staff meals, and taking the dogs for a walk. These chores are separate from the hours we expect you to fulfil and just part and parcel of being a resident of our community.
Please come if you like to ski or snowboard. Be prepared to work outside up to -20 Degrees Celsius in consistently blizzard conditions. Work with the horses at this time is mostly simple ground work and maintenance although we do take customers on treks. Our visitors and guests at this time mostly come to ski or snowboard. We get a lot of ski touring adventurers.
Our visitors and guests are mostly families coming to feed and pet and ride the animals and horses, BBQ, camp and generally relax in the countryside. On weekends and public holidays we are busy looking after customers in various service roles. The rest of the time we concentrate on farm work and projects. Summer is beautiful!
We are closed during the spring and fall months but often need the most help during these times.
Our meals vary depending on the seasons. We eat to match what is available, and the food schedule changes during the seasons. We can cater for vegetarians, but vegans are a struggle at this stage. Our chef creates consistently excellent and hearty food.
It is Japanese protocol to prevent any transmission of diseases to be in Japan for at least 7 days before visiting a farm.

Our accommodation is over 20 years old and small repairs have been done to improve them. It is an ongoing process. This is shared accommodation with 2 to 6 people in a room. Sometimes private rooms are available for couples.
All staff accommodation is rustic!
We have a staff van and we are next to a ski resort, hiking trails, near otaru, yoichi, and sapporo. We can offer guided horse rides on occasion. All of our animals love attention and you are welcome to help with them under the supervision of our farm manager.
In the winter we ski nearly everyday and live 5 minutes from the lifts.
