Considerations: excellent cooking skills, good cleaning skills, friendly and eager to join our family, native spanish or french language ability, maybe building/maintenance skills (please specify) or let us know what you bring...

Welcome to our “regular” family of four! Our youngest is 19. The home is located in a good neighbourhood, a 5 minute walk to the subway, and a short ride to downtown (Yonge & Bloor). We can host one Workawayer at a time, (sorry, no couples or friends). We enjoy traveling and meeting new people from different cultures and backgrounds. Please share with us your travel and adventure stories!

Most diets can be accommodated as one of us is vegetarian, one near vegan, but the rest of us eat meat and fish.

We have one small pet rabbit that we consider to be part of the family and hope that you too will become a rabbit person! She likes a lot of attention so please be kind to her and pay her attention during some of your free time also.

Two of us here only speak English, so if you want to improve your English skills this is a great opportunity. However if you are a native Spanish or French speaker Please speak your language as follows:
If you speak French we ask that you only communicate with one daughter in French, but speak to the Other three is us in English. If you are a native Spanish speaker I ask that you only speak to me, and one daughter in Spanish but the other two of us here in English. Gracias. Merci.

We really enjoy hosting visitors and welcoming new guests into our family. We have a minimum two week stay (Often with possibility to extend.) We enjoy hearing about your day, your travels, experience and life, and would like a guest that will join us in good conversation. If you are someone who will spend more than one hour of time per day on any combination of screen (phone, computer, tv, or any digital device) please do not request to stay with us. We have found in the past that people attached to their digital devices detract from these real connections. We are not a hotel or hostel, but a welcoming family home. You should want to spend time in conversation outside of your working hours and join us in meals and events when possible.

We ask only for persons that enjoy the start of the day and will get up before 8am daily.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We would like to introduce you to our city, culture, and activities nearby. We are looking for someone who wants to join us in family activities and outings when there is an opportunity to do so. On some weekends during the spring and fall there may be an opportunity for work (or off time) at our cottage on Long point- near Port Rowan Ontario. This is a beautiful area known for birding and also has a nice beach. If we go there one of us will drive you there and back. January update: the cottage is closed for the winter, but during the winter we visit small ski areas in southern ontario and if you are here you will be welcome to join us. Niagara Falls is also nearby and gorgeous in the winter.

Our family has many interests and we are happy to include you if you are interested to join us - such as: salsa dancing, skiing, skating, snowboarding, hiking/walks, art gallery visits, blues music festivals, cultural festivals, rock climbing, (many summer sport activities - but it’s too cold for these now) ....

    Help

Let us know what skills you bring- can you Cook? Clean well? Set up a charity or funding program? Sew? Garden? Do construction? Teach dance? Other? Not everyone is suited to all types of tasks and together we will decide what is best for you. Depending on your skill set we will send a more detailed outline of possible work after you contact us.

Updated: We may not start any new project this winter - so the work this winter in addition to shovelling snow (if it snows) is going to be focused on cooking tasks and house cleaning. If cooking is your skill please note that we are looking for a person who is very comfortable in the kitchen and able to meal prep quickly and also efficiently cook healthy (low calorie) delicious food for dinners and for taking lunches out of the house. When requesting to stay with us please list a few dishes you would enjoy making for the family. Thanks!

The fall tasks here may include help with the yard work such as raking and bagging leaves, lawn care, possibly repairs to deck, some small home improvement tasks such as preparing for painting, maybe refinishing wood railings or stairs?, sorting attic and basement, moving some small furniture and organizing around the house. Also, there will also be daily and weekly cleaning tasks of bathrooms, kitchen, living areas. There may also be some cleaning tasks outside, for example the car or deck furniture. It would be nice if you enjoy cooking and can provide extra help with this occasionally.

Some hours may be scheduled for help with reading in Spanish, or grammar study if you are able to do this.

You may also help take care of the pet rabbit - and this would include cleaning the cage regularly.

You should have a positive outlook on working and do it with energy and efficiency. You should be able to self manage, prioritize, and keep track of what you have done. Helping hours are intended for helping and we ask that you refrain from using your phone, eating your breakfast or lunch, or other personal matters in this time. It would be good if you could manage your schedule and keep track of your hours so that you can balance enjoying your travel with the work commitment here.

As we are working, and going to school, one day of the workaway hours will be scheduled on the weekend, and a few on one or two weeknights if we need to be with you - but you can still schedule off two days without work, example Fri&Sat or Sun&Mon.

I am also looking for help to start a charity that gives back to our community while raising funds to support schools and children living in poverty in Central America. This project is a new idea - so I am open to ideas - and also it can wait for the right person to help me take it off the ground.

We ask for a commitment of 24 hours of help per week and in addition to that a meal you will cook for the five of us that will include preparation, cooking, and cleanup. (we will shop for and pay for the ingredients). Any additional cooking that we request for the family will be counted towards working hours.

In Toronto, we are within a 5 min walking distance to library, indoor pool, gym, indoor skating rink, cafes , restaurants, a park, and neighbourhood shops. There is Internet at the Library and most of the café’s. we are a short walk to the subway with a 20 min ride to Bloor/Yonge – downtown.

Toronto is a diverse multicultural center with almost any kind of activity that you can think of. There are numerous art galleries, museums, theatre venues.... some of which can be quite costly, but there is also many free events throughout the city too.
