Description
Hi Workawayers! I'm Giovanni Maria, but you can call me Gianmaria or Giamma. I'm a 30-year-old mechanical engineer currently living in my hometown, San Giuseppe Vesuviano, near Naples and Pompeii, where I was born.
After spending the last year travelling around Asia as a Workawayer with my partner, Chiara, I decided to return home for a while to recharge my batteries and plan our next adventures. During our travels, we received so much hospitality and kindness that I would now love to give something back by welcoming travellers into my home and sharing our daily life with them.
You will also have the opportunity to meet my family. We are friendly, curious people with many different interests and ongoing projects - especially my brother - so there will usually be something interesting to do or talk about. We want you to feel included while also having plenty of independence and free time.
We live very close to Mount Vesuvio, and if you enjoy walking or hiking, we can take many beautiful walks in the surrounding area together. Our location is also a great base for exploring Naples, Pompeii and many other fascinating places nearby. Depending on our schedules, you may be able to visit them with me or my family, or explore them independently during your free time. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
During your stay, we would love to share some of our skills and interests with you and involve you in our everyday life. My mum and I can teach you how to prepare some traditional Italian dishes, while my family and I can introduce you to local food, traditions and our way of life. If you enjoy the outdoors, I can organise and lead hikes in the beautiful surroundings of Mount Vesuvius and help you discover some less-known places in the area.
We would also like to share some of our daily activities with you. Depending on the period and our schedules, these could include cooking and sharing meals, going for walks or hikes around Mount Vesuvius, exploring the local area, and taking part in small practical projects at home. We enjoy learning by doing, so if you have any particular skills, hobbies or interests, we would be happy to share them and learn something new from you.
I'm also a mechanical engineer, so if you're interested in practical activities, I can share my knowledge of vehicles and basic maintenance, as well as home maintenance projects. We also know how to take care of a vegetable garden, and I'd be happy to share what we know about growing plants and looking after it. Photography is another passion of mine, so if you enjoy taking pictures, we could explore the area together and exchange ideas and techniques.
My brother, in particular, will be very happy to welcome someone from another country. He always has plenty of projects and activities going on, and he loves sharing what he does with others, so there will probably be many opportunities to get involved, learn practical skills and discover new things together. -
Help
Our main project is language exchange. My cousin and I would like to improve our English, as I am aiming to reach B2 level and possibly take the IELTS exam by March 2027. This would be relaxed, informal practice through conversations and some excercises, shared activities and everyday life rather than just traditional lessons.
My cousin and I would love to spend at least a couple of hours together every other day speaking English, discussing different topics, sharing experiences and learning from each other.
In return, we can share our knowledge of Italian language and culture, introduce you to local traditions and food, and help you discover the area around Naples and Pompeii. We are also happy to exchange ideas about travelling, photography, engineering, outdoor activities and other interests we may have in common.
We don't expect you to follow a strict schedule or spend all your time with us. The idea is to create a genuine cultural exchange in which we can learn from each other, enjoy some activities together and still have plenty of independence and free time. Above all, we are looking for open-minded people who enjoy conversation, sharing experiences and becoming part of everyday family life for a while. -

Accommodation
We have a few accommodation options, depending on availability and your preferences. We have a small room upstairs and a room in my parent’s apartment, which has two beds. According to your preferences you will choose what you like the most. Just to mention it, we also have an entire house about 80 km from my hometown, where we like to spend time, especially during weekends. Depending on our plans, it could be a nice opportunity to spend some time in a different setting and explore the surrounding area.
We can provide **three meals a day when we are together at my home**. You are also welcome to buy, prepare and store your own food independently, so you can always choose what you prefer to eat. When you go out exploring on your own during your free time, you'll be responsible for your own food expenses.
If you enjoy camping, there is also the possibility of camping on the rooftop.
Our goal is to make you feel comfortable and at home while giving you the freedom to organise your time independently and enjoy your stay in your own way. -
