    Description

Welcome to our homestead in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. We, Greg and Kasia, are passionate about creating edible and resilient landscapes, and grow many fruit and nut trees, perrenial vegatables and have a big veggie garden. We hope to help make sustainable food sources accessible to everyone by promoting permaculture principles.

We are deeply committed to restoring the ecosystem on our property and enhancing local biodiversity. From planting native species to creating habitats that support wildlife, we’re actively working to repair and protect the land we call home.

Nestled in the Comox Valley, our location offers a great balance of natural beauty and community spirit. The area has easy access to the ocean and rivers, lush forests, and a vibrant local culture, there’s always something to explore when you’re not getting your hands dirty helping us grow and care for our trees.

If you’re passionate about sustainability, love working outdoors, and want to learn more about permaculture and ecosystem restoration, we’d love to host you on this exciting journey!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We both grew up in eastern Canada and have been living on the west coast (BC and California) for 15 years. We also both have backgrounds as scientists, with expertise in botany and psychology. Greg has also worked in agriculture his whole life. So with that in mind we will be happy to share our knowledge and skills around, gardening, farming, plant breeding, British Columbia's native flora and fauna, permaculture design, climate change adaptation, living in Canada, living on the west coast and the psychology of personnal flourishing.

We are also both homebodies, so we hope that by hosting we can learn about other cultures philosophies on well being and what makes a good life without leaving our home! We would also be very interested in hearing about other ecology projects you might know about or have helped with in the past, or how you are thinking about climate change adaptation and mitigation.

We have a community of freinds and neighbours that will make up our growing social network. We are new to workaway so please bare with us as we learn about sharing space and time with new people!

We always have many projects on the go! They are mostly outdoor projects, on the restoration/ecology side, this includes including planting trees and herbaceous plants, forest management, and on the homestead side, things like gardening, light construction and much more!
We will often be working alongside one another, or within earshot. There are many skills we are happy to share, some general and others very specialized.
We also have a for profit, small fruit and nut tree nursery on our property, volunteers will not be helping with any activities related to this nursery.

    Accommodation

We have a 30 foot "Avion" camper trailer for guests to stay in. It might be older (1978!) but is in excellent condition. It has a full (albeit camper size) kitchen, a bathroom with hot shower, electricity, two twin beds and a couch/table space that can be turned into a double matress. It is set up with a private deck space. The bathroom in the trailer is suplimented by an outhouse with composting toilet.

Food will be provided: we will stock the necessities in the trailer and will manage grocery trips for perishable or any requested items. Please note, we will not purchase any animal products from the grocery store. We are not oppose to you buying, preparing and eating any diet you choose to, but we refuse to support industrial animal agriculture ourselves.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We do live in the country side. There are some good options for a walk both on our property and in the neighbourhood, but to get to most things you will need a bike or a car. We have bikes that can be used to get to the corner store, go for a swim in the river, or go see the ocean. A longer bike ride (30minutes) gets you to a small grocery store, hardware store and more attractions. Getting to town is just over an hour by bike. We go to town a couple times per week and can coordinate trips, we can also plan out some outings to see local attractions. If you have your own mode of transport the options for things to do are greatly expanded.
