    Description

Hi, I am Soo — I am originally from Mauritius with Indian heritage, and I have been living in Cairns since 2007. I have a teenage son, Simon, and we have a cat named Missy.
I work a lot as a registered nurse, midwife, and natural therapist, so I am looking for someone who already knows how to do housework, cooking, gardening, and cleaning independently. I am not available for constant supervision, so this placement is best suited to someone who is self-motivated and can look at what needs doing and get on with it.
I am particularly looking for someone with home maintenance and basic DIY skills. There are always small jobs around the house that need attention — painting, minor repairs, simple fixes. If you have these skills, please highlight them in your application as this will be looked on very favourably.
I will provide food and accommodation in exchange for 4 hours of help per day, 5 days a week.
When Soo is busy with a massage client, please do not wait for her to eat. Ask Simon — he may join you for dinner. Save a plate for Soo in the microwave and put all leftovers away. Your 2 days off are flexible — just let me know your preference when you arrive.
We prefer help in the mornings so you have the rest of your day free to explore. We are an early household, so if you like sleeping until lunchtime, this will not be a good fit.
I welcome my guests warmly and treat them well to the best of my ability. In return, I expect help to be done to a good standard, not as a burden.

    YOUR SLEEPING SPACE
Your private space is in our living area, separated from the rest of the home by a full-length curtain for privacy. You will have a comfortable double sofa bed with pillows, a ceiling fan, a wardrobe for your belongings, a bedside table with lamp, and a garden view through the window. The living room television is available for your use during your stay.
The bathroom and toilet are shared with the household and located just off the sleeping area.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove, full oven, microwave, blender, and plenty of bench space. You are welcome to use it within house guidelines.

    HOUSE RULES
No smoking anywhere on the property
For security, all doors and windows must be kept locked when leaving the house or going to sleep. The garage must remain closed at all times. Cairns has opportunistic theft and we have experienced this firsthand — please take this seriously.
No alcohol in my home — I do not do this in front of my teenager and ask the same of guests
No food or drinks in the sleeping area
We are an early household — if you like sleeping until lunchtime, this is not the right place for you
Please let me know your preferred days off in advance
Please shower before 10pm. The bathroom noise carries to the bedrooms and wakes light sleepers.

Minimum stay: 1 week. Longer stays welcome — feel free to negotiate

TASKS (examples — not all required every day)
Dishes and dishwasher, kitchen bench wipe down, sweeping and vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, laundry (wash, dry, fold, put away), changing bed linen, wiping kitchen appliances and surfaces, windows and glass doors, ceiling fans, skirting boards, making dinner (the main cooking task — we cook the rest), watering plants, garden weeding, patio cleaning, sweeping outdoor areas, organising inside, organising outside, decluttering, scanning personal documents, flyer drops, grocery runs.
Home maintenance and DIY (highly valued): painting (interior/exterior), minor repairs and fixes, general DIY tasks, and other small jobs around the property.
You will keep your own daily log — choose what needs doing, record your minutes, and manage your own 4 hours each day.

    ACCESS
You will be provided with a key for the access door through the patio. You will use the side gate to come and go. When you need to leave the property, there is a key box available for the key if you prefer not to carry it with you.

    CULTURAL EXCHANGE
I am from Mauritius and have Indian heritage. I can teach you some Indian and Mauritian style cooking and share stories of my culture and my journey from Mauritius to England to Wales to Cairns. We speak English at home. I also know a little French, Hindi, and Mauritian Creole.

    A NOTE FROM SOO
I have hosted many workawayers and I genuinely enjoy the cultural exchange and the help. I have tightened my profile over time because I need someone who is already capable and motivated — not someone looking for a free holiday. If that is you, we will get along very well and you will have a warm, welcoming home base to explore Cairns from.
We attend church most Sundays at 6pm and we eat dinner there. You are welcome to join us and meet locals — we are happy to pay for your meal.
Please phone me for a chat with myself and my son before confirming — ask me for the number.
