    Description

Heya! I'm Donald, Born in The Netherlands, Hitchhiked Europe and Settled in Lithuania

I grew up in the city. studied Furniture and Custom Interior. After experiencing the 9 to 5 in a furniture production company but growing a strong interest in Meditation, Permaculture, Natural Building and a more self sufficient lifestyle. I decided to travel and look for ways to experience this (at that moment) unfamiliar way of life. I ended up hitchhiking and using workaway visiting places where I could learn about this. I did this for about 3.5 years with only a yearly Christmas visit to my hometown.

In these years I realized I don't want to live a city life. I feel more attuned living in the natural surroundings of the village. The luxury of growing your own food in the garden and the high value of a quiet and peaceful environment. Knowing this is how I see my future. I settled in Moletai, in this Sodyba (Farmstead) Early 2019. Its a 2.5 ha piece of land, On top an old 120m2 Log house, 3 Barns an Orchard and a Pond occupied by frogs and toads. in an area with a lot of pine forests and lakes around.

My goal: To make a life in the village, Intergrade all the things I learned to be more self sufficient. To start my own business in furniture and to Restore this old Sodyba to its former glory using as much as possible the local traditional and natural ways as it as build.

I like Hiking, Campfire chats, Stargazing and I play the drums. For a period of my life I was addicted to Lindy hop and Blues. I don't dance as often these days, but staying on the farmstead can feel quite Isolated so the occasional dancing keeps me Social and connected.

I can teach you about Carpentry and Woodworking, Natural building and some basic gardening things. We can go hiking in the nearby Pine Forests or around local lakes. In the dark winter months I like to do Full Moon hikes at night. I play the drums and dance Lindy hop, a bit of Blues. I can teach basic drum rhythms or we can go dancing at one of the weekly socials in Vilnius (sometimes they give free lessons too). There are plenty of museums, towns and interesting places to visit for that taste of Lithuania. In my Workaway Years I learned one traditional dish of every country I volunteered in and could teach you each dish or we visit the best local Lithuanian restaurant. I can show you a bunch of stars and constellations on a clear night sky.

I am self employed, I mostly work from home. Occasionally on a different location.
The main help is needed with the Garden 🌱🌱 and maintaining the property. tasks are very dependent on the season and weather. If you have any knowledge on Gardening, Permaculture or companion planting. please come over and upload your knowledge to me :) I like to experiment.

In my free time I work on DIY projects around the house, or I might be building something new.

I need to improve and practice my Lithuanian language, are you a local and interested to spend a Calming weekend in the country side, help out with some gardening and talk Lithuanian to me? Send me a message!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You can stay in a room in the house. I have matrasses and blankets. There is also a sleeping area on top of the Traditional Bread oven. Many guests like to stay on the oven (Its very cozy:). The property is 2.5 ha, so if you like you can pitch your tent anywhere or take a hammock and occupy the Orchard or Barn if you are into that :)

  • What else ...

    What else ...

I believe moderation is key. I don't eat meat daily, but once in a while I do. If I can, I try to avoid buying processed meat and go for Local produce. I try to minimize my refined sugar consumption and avoid artificial sweeteners, Yet every once in a while a big cake, Bag o Biscuits or a bar of chocolate is devoured! I avoid buying products from Nestle, Unilever or with Palm Oil, but sometimes I do groceries for somebody else that does want them. I don't take pills or common medication. Yet occasionally you end up in a situation where there is no alternative. I try to be as Aware as possible of what I buy, what I eat, the products I use and the effect it will have on me and the environment.

The above was written on my Volunteer profile and I lived by this for many years. But times change, Even though I still avoid many brand and basically avoid common medication. I am less strict to myself when it comes to meat and sugar consumption. There is just so much Tasty things in Lithuania :)
