    Description

My name is Belen. I am married and have 3 children (all boys! 20-22-24 years old, who are now living away studying in University). We live in a familiy house in the countryside with our dog Cooper (6 years old). When the children were small we had german aupairs. It was a great experience to have foreign people at home. We still have contact with most of them and they come and visit us frequently. We are all used to having foreign people at home, so I thought it would be a good idea to have somebody to help with the garden :-). We have been hosting volunteers since 2020 and it has been a great experience.

We live in Conil, Cádiz (south west coast of Spain, Andalucia). It is a beautiful family house, with swimming pool, surrounded by pine trees and a very big garden. We have chickens that give us fresh eggs every morning!! and some horses from our son Pablo, who is very fond of them and is at the moment living with us and trains them. The property is quite big. One part, is where the horses are and the chickens also have their house there. We have a big vegetable garden where I plant vegetables (for our own use) . There is a part for the winter veggies and another for the winter ones. And also an orchard with fruit trees (planted very small and seeing how they grow and adapt to the soil and space...) . There is also a very bit lawn around the house with lots of plants and flowers.
We are looking for someone with gardening and farm skills, who likes working in the field and would like to spend some time in the area to help in the garden in exchange of accommodation and food.

There will be some hours needed to help. There will be different jobs to do, with the chickens, cleaning the horse aera, but most of the time in the vegetable garden, kompost, fruit orchard, building fences, (carpentry knowledge and experience will be highly appreciated). The rest of your day, you can enjoy going to the beach, cycle around the area, surf, or even go to a language school to practise some spanish, or just enjoy the calm and peace under a pine tree ;-)

    Help

In the garden, there is always something to do!! and lots of new things to invent...
The main task will be to take care of the chickens and all the vegetables in the vegetable garden. Also take care of the fruit trees and all the plants and flowers in the garden.
We have a Kompost (installed near the vegetable garden) which we are filling and have had great soil!!

We are also working on a elevated vegetable garden, so we don't have to kneel down to pick up the veggies... We have done it with old pallets and it is looking great! We have some of the vegetables in the elevated garden and some in the soil. Every season we try new plants and see where they grow better (up or down...)

We also have a small green house where we experiment with seeds and plants.
The trees in the orchard are growing well. Every season we plant new ones.
There is also a fence around the property where we are planting trees and plants (mostly recycled plants from other parts of the garden... regenerating the soil)
And our new guests : the chicken are also growing healthy and happy.
There is also a piece of land (a bit wild at the moment...) where the horses live and have their space.

All new ideas & proposals for the garden, the house and the land are always very welcome ;-)

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We love to have friends and family around. In some occasions there will be just the family and the volunteers. Sometimes there will be lots of people in the house. You will normally have your own room in the house and a shared bathroom, but on some occasions in the summer where the house is full of family you can also have your own privacy staying in a caravan placed in the garden, near the horse area. There is internet in the house and all the facilities you might need.

    What else ...

You can borrow a bike to go around places. There is also a bus stop 10 min walking from the house that will take you to Conil (nearest town) and from there you can go for trips to get to know the area in your free days.
There are lots of great places to visit in the province of Cadiz!

We have installed new internet at home and it is working great. You could work from your room or upstairs, in the library, where you will find peace and quiet and a great atomosphere to work and concentrate.

Our dog Cooper (6 years old) is very nice, but I don't let him go in the chicken are out. Just in case...(instict can sometimes play bad tricks...) The chickens share the space with my son's horses.
