Description
Kia ora and welcome! Our farm is located just outside Wellington, is a community-centered regenerative farm that’s all about cultivating resilience, connection, and a passion for the land. We’re an 800-hectare living laboratory with a mix of lush grazing pastures, native bush, and pine forestry, all managed with a vision of ecological health and community well-being.
About us
Our farm is not your typical sheep and beef farm. Alongside our 700 sheep and 120 cattle grazing on beautiful, holistically managed pastures, we’re a hub for ecological education, regenerative agriculture, and community engagement. Our market garden and farm shop offer a variety of locally grown produce and farm-raised goods, making us a local food hub for our community. This summer, we’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us in caring for the land and bringing our farm’s vision to life.
What You’ll Experience
Volunteers will get hands-on experience in regenerative farming, with plenty of variety in day-to-day tasks. Depending on the season and our current projects, your activities may include:
- Assisting in the market garden – planting, harvesting, composting, and learning about soil health and sustainable food production.
- General farm work – helping with grazing rotations, livestock care, and getting involved in our holistic pasture management practices.
- Landscaping and maintenance – assisting with the upkeep of our diverse landscape, from our lush fields to our stands of native bush and pine.
- Supporting farm events – we host free events that connect the community with the farm, and volunteers often help with setting up, hosting, and making these experiences memorable for our guests.
Why us?
Our farm is a place of learning, growth, and community. We believe in relocalizing and re-engaging people with the land, and our team brings together a mix of experience, vision, and down-to-earth Kiwi character. If you’re looking for a place to immerse yourself in regenerative agriculture, work hard, learn a lot, and connect with a wonderful team, we’d love to hear from you!
If this sounds like the experience you’re looking for, send us a message with a brief bio and potential dates. We’re excited to welcome new faces to Mangaroa Farms and share in this journey of regeneration, growth, and connection. 🌱
We are a registered charity dedicated to advancing environmental conservation, education, and public health in alignment with the dual heritage of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi). Our mission focuses on restoring ecological integrity, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting regenerative practices in food production and community development. We are passionate about sharing knowledge through workshops and learning experiences, fostering deeper connections between people, the land, and the ecosystems that sustain us.Types of help and learning opportunities

Our farm holds some elements of a classic sheep and beef farm as well as an acute focus on a healthy future. There are 12 people working on the project with more in the wider community living in the valley here and we gather somewhat regularly for team meals at the communal kitchen. There is a yurt where we host events ranging from breathwork and sound journeys to creative writing and even choir!
We are situated 45 mins from central Wellington, an hour from the Kapiti Coast and we're surrounded by forested mountains ripe for exploration. There's plenty to be entertained by within the valley and nearby.Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Help
We’re looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, hardworking, and genuinely interested in regenerative farming and community-focused agriculture. There are a whole range of jobs to be done across the various enterprises on the farm. Some days might be a structured work session, working together in the market garden, building, landscaping, creating art or jobs on the farm. Others days might hold less structure, you might be left to a mix of self directed tasks.
Longer stays are ideal, but if you can only join us for a shorter stint we’d love the help! Please make note if you're coming with any specific skills, passions or experiences and we can try and taylor your stay with us to suit :)Languages spoken
