    Description

We are Jo and Jake, street performers making an eco creation studio in southern Spain, where small theatre companies will eventually come to develop their ideas.

We are also excited to see how we can re-wild our olive groves, using the permaculture techniques we are gradually acquiring, whilst making a beautiful environment for people to create in. We are off-grid, but have bountiful electricity from our solar panels, and a generator for backup. We have a makeshift kitchen, an indoor bathroom with toilet, and compost loo. We have a washing machine.

Our 25-year-old son Roo and partner Dora, also come to stay regularly. We are in our late fifties and early sixties (how did that happen?). We are politically engaged.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We see Workaway as an opportunity for mutual learning. In the past, we’ve shared knowledge about eco-living, gardening, and community living, while also learning new cooking styles, languages, and perspectives from our guests. English is the main language here, but we have lived and worked all over the world and love communicating with people from different backgrounds.
In free time, Workawayers often enjoy practising with our circus equipment, which is available for juggling, slack lining, acro etc.
Many have also enjoyed improving their culinary skills, as we often cook together and experiment with vegetarian and vegan dishes.

We are developing an eco-creation studio where ideas of sustainability, permaculture, and creativity come together. Over the past couple of years, we’ve built a wooden yurt, created new vegetable gardens, planted trees, and looked after our olive grove. There’s always something new to learn and do, from caring for the land to exploring eco-living solutions.
This is a place of exchange — we enjoy welcoming Workawayers who want to share their energy, ideas, and experiences, and in return, we love showing people what we’ve learned so far.
Life here is varied and follows the rhythm of the land and the seasons. Some of the activities Workawayers might get involved with include:
    • Looking after the olive grove, vegetable plots, and young trees
    • Helping with composting, mulching, and caring for soil health
    • Watering plants and maintaining irrigation channels
    • General up keep such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning shared spaces, making fires in winter evenings, and keeping the kitchen bright and welcoming
    • Seasonal tasks such as planting, pruning, or creating natural compost areas
    • Contributing to ongoing eco-projects such as maintaining our yurt, improving communal spaces, or helping with outdoor features — always with a focus on learning and sharing skills.
We sometimes work as a group, and sometimes individually. We really appreciate Workawayers who are motivated, adaptable, and happy to learn new skills, whether that’s in the garden, the kitchen, or simply in day-to-day life here.

We love hosting people who are:
    • Enthusiastic and willing to get involved in varied tasks
    • Curious about sustainability, permaculture, and eco-living
    • Happy to work both independently and as part of a team
    • Open to cultural exchange and sharing experiences

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have two bedrooms in the shared house (each can host two people) and a bell tent in the garden that many prefer in warmer weather. We try to give everyone their own space, though occasionally sharing may be needed.
We usually work around five hours a day, five days a week. In return, we provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
On work days, Workawayers share responsibility for preparing meals and washing up — this is part of living together in community and is not counted within the five hours of work. It’s also a wonderful way to exchange recipes and improve cooking skills, especially with vegetarian and vegan dishes.
We also provide ingredients for Workawayers to prepare their own meals on their two days off, so you’re always well-fed and free to cook what you like.
We value people who respect the shared spaces and are happy to keep their rooms tidy during their stay.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are 20 minutes walk from Orgiva, with many cafes and bars. The town is a mixture of traditional Andalucian agricultural town, and bohemian centre, with lots of travellers, hippies, progressives, mavericks, Sufis, and other people from all over the world. There is also an established Buddhist centre a drive away. The Alpujarra is a really multicultural place, and that's how we like it!

There are lots of workshops, groups, and markets occuring in the surrounding area, including saunas and yoga at our neighbours. Often there are parties, raves, live music and performances in various locations.

There are beautiful walks starting from our land.

We are 40 minutes from the beach by car, and about an half hour to the mountains. You can ski in the Sierra Nevada in winter!

Granada is about 45 minutes, with all the benefits a city brings, and hot springs nearby in the countryside.

We recommend workawayers have their own transport, but people here often hitchhike too.
