Located in the south-west Algarve on the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, we are starting an eco-friendly project: a park in the middle of nature, 1km from the sea and near the village of Figueira.
Our project is to create a brand new space of cultural exchange and fun for families and friends. This Park will be an open space to the public from 8am to 8pm. There will be no permanent buildings. Shaded areas will be created using reeds from the river which will be one of the attractions.
The purpose of this project is to provide the region with a space dedicated to nature and culture. It will be an important meeting point for families to participate in cultural and sporting activities. There will be outdoor activities, such as games to encourage education in local traditions and cultures. It is mainly aimed at children and their parents that want to take walks, surf lessons, bird watching, mountain biking, climbing, etc. in the local area.
We will be focusing from the beginning in clearing the land and landscaping, to be able to build up the basic facilities, and later on the different areas of the project: bamboo domes to welcome workshops, conferences, meetings, etc; an arena to organise music, live concerts and jam sessions; different relaxation areas; food and beverage spaces around the artificial lake, etc.
The space will have domes for different activities and workshops, conferences, yoga lessons, etc. involving local companies, artists and so on. The brook that crosses the terrain will be cleansed to encourage native species, rabbits, birds, frogs, and others.
The wish is to create a site to welcome different activities and to create a family atmosphere where guests can enjoy the nature. The majority of the structures will be built in organic materials so that our footprint will be low.
It will create a meeting point where locals and tourists can enjoy, exchange and interact with each other. This park will be a great promoter of local economies, small local producers, organic farms, etc. all with the purpose of reconnecting with nature and promoting sustainable lifestyles and consumption, while having fun in the beautiful surroundings of the Natural Park.
Help with Eco project
The volunteers will be benefiting of one of the most beautiful areas of Portugal, which is the National Park Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast.
They will learn to build in Eco construction, namely with straw bales and reeds. They will learn to build dry toilets and to reuse organic matter. The plan is also to build an artificial lake.
The creation of this project can be a great opportunity for all of us. First of all, it will be a good opportunity to learn how to build basic facilities with organic and recycled materials. We will be installing running water, toilets and solar showers, a mobile or temporary kitchen, etc.
We will be creating some big domes and other structures (wind breakers for example) made out of canas (a type of local bamboo that invades the river). This is a physical job but gives us the opportunity to learn how to use natural materials to build instead of concrete and other harmful materials for the environment.
The landscaping and the lake creation will be also very physical work. The garden is planned to be near the river and will benefit from the overflow of water from the artificial lake. This is a great chance to learn and practice organic vegetable gardening.
Volunteers should be people interested in the creation of an innovative eco-park, where people can meet and socialise, relax in nature, enjoy different activities and food, learn through workshops, etc. Volunteers may also be interested in exploring the region, but at the same time wanting to work on a local project, to learn new skills and meet like-minded people.
We are planning to get together a team of 5 people from 15 January 2020 to the beginning of May 2020, with the possibility of staying longer. The volunteers will be helping 5 hours per day, 5 days a week. You will have the rest of the time for yourselves to discover the beautiful area of the South-West Algarve, including all the local surf beaches, and the national park hiking trails.
The main jobs will be:
• The construction of structures and wind breakers using reeds.
• The construction of bamboo domes.
• The construction of a lake.
• Cleaning a large fig tree.
• Cutting and harvesting and segmentation of the river reeds (3 to 4 days).
• Start the process of joining the reeds (1 week).
• Rehearse and union of the different parts (3 days).
• Unite new reeds for adjustments and reinforcements (2 days).
• Finish process of the mats and put them in the structures (1 week).
One team will be taking care of the creation of a lake, connecting the river to the spring water source which was previously used for agriculture. Today the source is dry and covered with thick vegetation. There will be a lot of work cleaning the land on that area to recover the source. This creek, with the help of a solar pomp, will feed the small lake as well as the veggie garden, and come out into the river that is going towards the beach.
This whole operation may take more than a month to build and will combine with the construction of domes and wind breakers in the surrounding terrain.

The volunteers will be staying in caravans in a nearby caravan park, owned by the same people.
Two volunteers will be sharing one caravan. Please note, that caravans are small spaces and you will be taking care of your own space (empty grey water tanks, refill with fresh water, empty the chemical cassette toilet, etc...) which also will be part of your daily duties.
The cohabitation of two volunteers in one caravan must be something you agree on before you accept coming, since there will be no possibility of having a private place of your own. If you have your own campervan or caravan you are welcome to bring it over. The campsite will not be charging you any rent. In both cases anyhow you will have access to all the campsite facilities and services (toilets and showers, garden, BBQ area, etc...).
A substantial breakfast will be provided at 8 in the morning. At 9 o’clock we will be starting work to finish at 14 o’clock after which you will have the afternoon for yourselves. Money will be provided for lunch and dinner.
Volunteers in their free time can enjoy pleasant walks and get to know the local country lifestyle. The marked hiking trail the Rota Vicentina can be explored as well as many other unmarked trails. You could learn to surf as there are many ideal beaches for surfing in the area (other activities include paddle-boarding, mountain biking, boat trips etc). There are regular buses from Figueira to both Lagos and Sagres where further activities/restaurants/sites/services can be accessed. Within walking distance from the caravan park are several restaurants, a cafe (with vegetarian and vegan food), and a small shop. The nearest large supermarket is 5 minute drive away.
