Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Our Animal Rescue provides compassionate care to animals that have been designed by the commercial food industry to live short, unhappy lives. helpers here learn to provide for the needs of these poor abused animals by understanding when they are in need and meeting their requirements. You will learn some basic medical procedures (you might have to give a rooster a pill!) and you will learn how to manage yourself safely around 300kg pigs and 600kg cattle, many of whom have suffered at the hands of people in the food industry before their rescue. You will learn an appreciation for these wonderful animals and will learn to spot trouble signs and when they just need a pat. You will also learn to sweep, mop, scrub and use a pitchfork like a master! 3 month helpers will receive an internship reference stating that they have been trained to handle large animals and provide basic medical care.
Help
Help includes daily cleaning of barns and coops, feeding, health checks, light maintenance help, monitoring herd movements and intensive care of ill, old and baby animals. Extra tasks may be required when new rescues, infants or school groups come in. You will help in a team of two.
Working 3.5 days per week. Days start at dawn and finish at dusk with breaks assessed at 7 hours a day. 3.5 days off every week allowing for visits to the nearby village (1.5km), walking trails and spending cuddle time with the animals. There is no public transport, but we will collect on your first day and return on your last day to Petrie Railway Station.

This was my first workaway experience & I will not forget it for many reasons.
The work is challenging physically & mentally, esp if you haven't worked on a farm before, but so so rewarding.
Such a beautiful environment, a great place to slow down, connect deeper to nature & yourself on days off. Also a very safe… read more

I had worked with animals before, both in conservation and animal care, but the level of connection one got to at FAR with all their animals (especially the pigs! :D) is something I certainly had not experienced before. Plus, the satisfaction after a 12-hour shift of exclusively… read more
Working with these farm animals is unforgettable, especially for a suburbanite like me. When I got there, I couldn't tell a chicken from a rooster, and had to ask if Oliver was a sheep or a goat. I got to pick… read more

The animals are amazing and I've learned so much about caring for farm animals and their behavior among each other. I've never met animals that came from these horrible factory farms and it was such an eye opener. I already was vegan before I came here… read more
