Description
We are a family who lives in downtown Ottawa in one of the hip/fun/walkable neighbourhoods - Hintonburg. Our house is a duplex and we rent out the other unit. However, we also have a guest room in our part of the house that we would love to have guests from other parts of the world use on occasion.
We are a pretty busy household, doing lots of community building and activism to make our neighbourhood a better place to live. We also do a lot of folk dancing (contra dance; square dance; etc) and one of us plays trad music (think irish fiddle music). We like meeting other people and learning about their lives.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Are are an anglophone household with a bit of french language skills. There are two adults and one 11yr old in our home. We are pretty busy folks with lots going on so while we'd connect with you somewhat, you'd have a lot of time to yourself to engage with the community and city. (We live right downtown within a 5min walk from the OTrain and are VERY close to the Ottawa River and many cycling paths.)
We do a lot of folk dancing and have gatherings at our place including occasional house concerts, trad dance, parties, games nights, and more.
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
Given that we're a pretty busy family, we'd be looking for help either with things like cooking/kitchen support and general cleaning. In the summer there are opportunities for yardwork (we nave a native pollinator garden) and my husband often needs help on renovations projects. (He knows how to do all the work but having a second pair of hands to help him would make projects go faster.)
We're also interested in improving our French skills so if you are a first-language French speaker, sharing your conversational skills in French could be part of the exchange. Our kiddo is also very interested in Japanese food and culture so that could be part of an exchange too.
The maximum time for work per week won’t vary but the specific times may vary depending on the tasks I need done, the weather and your wishes/activities.

We speak English so could support someone working on their English skills. While we are happy to host folks from anywhere, it would be particularly fun for us to host folks from a French language background (for us to learn more French) or from Japan (our kiddo is interested in Japanese).
Accommodation
We have a one bedroom room with a double bed and a closet. There is a separate bathroom right beside the bedroom that the guest has access to. (We use a different bathroom for morning/evening activities but throughout the day use the bathroom near the guestroom.)
In terms of food - we are hoping that as part of your workaway hours, you might help or lead meal preparation. We are happy to discuss this with you and we can do it in some instances - it's just that we see meal prep as a main way to exchange work for stay. Either way, we will have groceries and a fully working kitchen on hand. :)
