    Description

Hi! I am Vannessa, I have nearly three riverfront acres on the North western Archipelago, Haida Gwaii. I offer a whole food plant based stay in a healthy calm environment.
I am excited to host travelers again. I have hosted language students in another home previously and enjoyed the cultural exchange! My home is a rustic cabin with electric but I do bring the water in and water is provided in five gallon jugs, not running. I have an electric water jug so there is hot water for tea and coffee at all times. There is a propane water heater for showering outside. No indoor plumbing. It would suit a couple or single who is used to extended camping. I have a Vanagon Westfalia Campervan for you to stay in. The Westfalia is hooked up to electric and unlimited wifi. I can provide healthy whole food meals. I am mostly Whole Food Plant Based. I have five rescue chickens. They provide some eggs and I have wild caught fish occasionally. If you eat meat, feel free to add it to the meals I provide and you can cook it outside or in the outbuilding. I have a BBQ and a fire pit we can sit around! I provide a simple, but welcoming atmosphere. so please ask. The goal in general is to move towards an artistic, beautiful, tidy property. The surrounding areas are fun to check out and the community is vibrant, and active with dinners and events happening often.

    Vannessa :-D

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

I speak English as a first language and am happy to help you with proficiency. I am from a multicultural city, have hosted language students, I enjoy all cuisines if you would like to cook a few fun dinners with me. I have most spices and many kitchen appliances and can show you bread making, sprouting, soy yogurt from scratch starting with beans. I have lived Van life Coast to Coast of Canada, Coast to Coast of the US, and into the Baja peninsula. I have travelled to Panama, Japan, Mexico. I can share information on those areas. I am an esthetician by trade, and questions related to that are welcome.

See the link I provided for activities. There are a lot. Museums etc. You can learn about the Haida Culture here. Weather is unpredictable and the winds can be fierce. The waves are stunning in a storm. There are a few people here who have work away's and wwoof'ers, most of the time a host will pick everyone up and drive them to the events or any outings. Public transportation is not available but you can often catch a ride to the other communities with someone commuting to and from work. Please don't be a heavy drinker, no hard drugs, no smoking in the van or buildings, be reasonably tidy, just be a decent, respectful person in general.

  • Help

    Help

There is a nice variety of tasks to do. I need help organizing and sorting, adding artistic touches such as driftwood trim or shelves, moving lumber into piles and sorting, cutting back the wild salmon berries, cleaning up the garden, clearing a little path to the river or adding some small stepping wood rounds. Firewood can be stacked. The chicken area has places that need fence repair. The ground is all sand and easy to dig in if you would like to put up some fencing. My Vanagon could use a look over if old cars are a passion of yours, I would love to do tasks together on rust removal, or spot priming, but it's only if this is something you would enjoy doing. There's no one here that does this so I'll be doing it myself. We could paint some flowers along the repaired areas. If you have a talent, I haven't mentioned, that you would prefer to focus on, I probably need it around here. I have an expensive skill set in many areas that I am happy to share with you.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

In a Vanagon Westfalia van. All bedding is included as well as electric and internet. Most places are on limited internet here. Mine is fiber optic and not limited. I also have back up Starlink with 50g for emergencies and there is a land line. I can have sourdough, a variety of curry or soups throughout the week, a potato or rice dish, roasted veg, sprouts, etc. Chia pudding, overnight oats etc. ready to go for whenever you are hungry. I am not super schedule oriented so most of the time, just come in and eat or get your food, whatever you prefer. I have a camping burner you can also use for when you feel like cooking on your own, and an electric kettle, a lot of camping and plug in appliances that you are welcome to. There is a wood burning stove and sofas in the main cabin. The kitchen is separated well and is at the front door, so it is an easy space to come and go from. We can do some sit down meals as well, whenever our schedules allow for it.

I can only provide an extension cord. Everything else must be self contained. There is an old outhouse on the property or you can use a compost bucket system and we can build an area for the contents.

If you have a cat, it needs to be in your unit or on a leash. My cat roams and doesn't do well with others. There is also an aggressive neighbor cat. I have a small old, blind dog that is fine with any pets, but yours would need to be kind with her. She is mostly in the house, except when I carry her outside for the potty.
