Description
About Us:
Hello future Workawayers! We are Éva and Richard, an English-Hungarian couple passionate about art, architecture, painting, and music. We love exploring cultures and languages, and collectively speak English, French, Italian, Romanian, Hungarian, and a little Spanish and Portuguese.
We live in a charming small town in a Hungarian ethnic area of Romania, situated on a quiet street close to the town center. Our home is a haven with a beautiful garden, an outdoor cat named Tigi, and a lovely fishpond with several goldfish.
About Your Opportunity:
We are planning to spend a few months in Brazil starting from mid-August and are seeking a responsible and caring house-sitter to look after our home and pets. This is a unique opportunity to experience authentic Transylvanian life, immerse yourself in a quiet community, and enjoy the comfort of a private home.
Your Accommodation:
You will have access to a comfortable guest room, a spacious living room, a private bathroom, a dining room, and a fully equipped kitchen. You will be alone in the house during your stay, offering plenty of privacy and independence.
Important Note on Energy Use:
As energy prices are rising globally, we kindly ask our guests to be mindful of consumption. Please only heat rooms when you are actively using them and switch off lights and electronics when not needed. Your cooperation in conserving energy is much appreciated.
Your Responsibilities (Main Tasks):
Pet Care:
Feed our friendly outdoor cat, Tigi, daily and give her a bit of attention and cuddles.
Feed the goldfish in the pond once a day until late October.
Fishpond Monitoring:
Keep an eye on the fishpond pump. If the water flow decreases or stops (indicating a clog), please switch off the pump immediately to prevent damage. This happens only occasionally.
Neighborly Support:
Do occasional grocery shopping (1-2 times) for Éva's parents and our elderly neighbor who live on the same street.
Offer them a bit of company occasionally, if they are receptive to it (they are very kind people!).
Garden Care:
Water the small trees and bushes as needed, especially during spring and hot summer days without rain.
House Care & Maintenance Awareness:
Ensure the house is well-maintained and kept tidy.
Report any breakages or malfunctions immediately.
Winter Care (Crucial): During winter, it is essential to maintain a minimum temperature of 15°C (59°F) throughout the house to prevent water pipes from freezing. A plumber will set up the system, but your awareness is key.
We have well water supplied by a pump in our cellar. The cellar door must be kept closed at all times to prevent the pump from freezing, as replacement is costly.
We kindly ask you to take good care of our personal belongings, dishes, furniture, and the artworks displayed on the walls.
Our Community & Location:
This is a very safe and friendly area. While most local people primarily speak Hungarian, many younger residents speak some English. People here are generally very helpful and welcoming. Knowledge of Hungarian would be a significant advantage when we make our selection, as it will greatly enhance your interaction with the community and our family.
Availability:
This opportunity is available from mid-August for a limited time. Please specify your exact availability in your application.

Tigi (7 years)
Meet Tigi, our darling one-eyed wonder cat! She's a incredibly kind and friendly outdoors cat who absolutely loves a bit of affection. Tigi is remarkably smart – she really seems to sense your mood and knows her name well. You'll often find her being quite funny, sometimes doing little hops when she runs, and she's a joy to watch as she explores the garden. If you're spending time outside, she'll likely be right there, keeping you company. While she enjoys trying to sneak indoors, she has her own safe, warm cat-room where she spends cold nights when needed. The best part? No litter box duty for you – she's a very clean cat who prefers to do her business outdoors!
