    Description

We have an off-grid homestead on an island, where we rear Barbados Blackbelly sheep, and grow our own veg and fruit. We are remote - far away from any village, shops or restaurants. We are building a wooden house with traditional Malay woodwork practices, (ie joinery, no nails.) Our current need is for one or two STRONG and FIT WORKAWAYERS, who can lift heavy things, and are experienced and skilled in woodwork, construction, fence building or house painting. (We do not need yoga, meditation, website design, digital nomads or sunset seekers.) In return for your 5-6 hours of physical work, we offer you 3 meals a day, a rustic bedroom, a quiet beach, the tropical rainforest, birds and waggy-tail love from 5 affectionate dogs. We are a retired couple (zoologist and teacher), our kids are grown-up and living overseas, and we enjoy sharing our remote paradise with like-minded hard-working guests.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We live remote from the rural fishing community on this island, and since we rarely see people, we retain our own 'culture' - we are an educated, well-traveled British/Malay couple, who has lived in Malaysia for 45 years. We can show you how we make use of our natural sources of energy, water and naturally-found nutrients to live in reasonable comfort. We are entirely solar-powered, and we use filtered stream water and rain water. We use the sand, forest topsoil, and composted manure, grass and leaves to make our soil. We grow the food plants that thrive locally.

  • Help

    Help

We seek help from strong and fit volunteers who have an interest in sustainable farming, and we especially need people with experience and skills in WOODWORK. Daily tasks include feeding the sheep, watering the gardens, mowing and raking grass and leaves, composting, beach trash clean-up, sanding, oiling or painting wood. If you are skilled in woodwork, then your time would be devoted to house-building and less on the farm.

    Accommodation

We have basic accommodation for 2, in a loft above the wood workshop, with a bathroom downstairs. Meals are prepared and eaten at our house which is in a separate building uphill. We make mainly western food, some Malay food, lots of vegetables. Help with food preparation and washing up is welcome.

In your free time, you can go to the beach, read, take the dogs for a walk in the forest, go bird-watching, draw etc. If you take a day off you can travel to the main island and see the local tourist attractions.
