Description
March 2026 projects
planning to do a big push to finish the house, I need help with...
In the House
- building bookcases and window seats from recovered wood
- finishing painting and kitting out bedroom & bathrooms
- painting shutters and doors
- fixing my old but still good Apple Mac Tower
In the Garden
- planting and organising the small east garden to make it a perfect lunch location for us
- sowing seeds & managing cuttings for the larger flower & veg gardens
- prepping the veg garden
- prepping the flower beds
- renovating garden furniture
In General:
I am renovating a house in France in the Lot department, I do most things myself. My two hectares is being converted into a flower garden, vegetable garden, woodland area etc. I have two cats, and some chickens. In the summer we are fairly self-sufficient. The weather is glorious and the relaxed attitudes here is lovely. There is much to do so I am looking for volunteers that can help.
I enjoy people with open minds, independent, and with initiative. Read on to find out more...

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
I am in lovely rural France, the wildlife here is fab so if you like open space and nature this is perfect. I am doing so much stuff there is lots to learn so this should be a benefit to both to me and you. Being English I speak English at home, but we are surrounded by French locals so you can improve both launguages. I am a good cook and love all types of cuisine so you will eat well.

Help
HELPING
Always need help with the vegetable garden and creating the flower garden. I am especially interested in connecting with volunteers that have horticultural knowledge so that I can also improve my knowledge.
Good DIYer? Lots of tasks including helping me:
I have an idea to turn the south field into a garden or a food forest. If you have some ideas and want to contribute let me know.

ABOUT YOU
I need volunteers as funds are limited but I do not regard my volunteers as 'slaves' I try to match the help and hours with what is acceptable and interesting to them.
I would love someone that is interested in food and drink.
One person or a couple, any age, I love people with experience and stories to tell so that usually means late 20's plus, but I am open to all ideas. I am omniverous but don't eat meat that often so am very happy being vegetarian, I am passionate about good food.
I am also interested in a permaculture and-or food forest partner.
Everything is negotiable. I prefer someone looking for a longer stay - usually I suggest a trial for two weeks and then continue after if we are all happy.
The hours are negotiable and unique to each arrangement. Generally, people do tasks 4-5 hours daily and not at weekends - or at least a lazy Sunday. In the hot weather, doing tasks first thing in the morning is best, especially if we are outside, then lunch and a pause, and possibly another session later in the day. So much depends on the weather and your own preferences so we generally work it out and it is likely about 20 hours a week - some people I can't stop so they do more, but I don't expect that.

I want to improve my French, I love language and get so frustrated that I can't always say what i really want to. I can help with English spoken and written - also all sorts of computer-related stuff
Accommodation
The house is not finished but perfectly liveable. You will have your own space with a good double bed, mattress and linen and an adjacent loo; I can also accommodate a camper van or similar if that is your preference.
I prepare lunch and dinner for my volunteers, you do as you wish for breakfast - there is always homemade bread, jams and marmalades plus other things in the fridge, cake and biscuit tins.
What else ...
As we are rural there are all the outdoor activities such as walking, birdwatching, riding, cycling etc. We are also very close to the Lot river where you can swim, fish, and canoe. And, of course, there are the vineyards. There are fantastic markets here and a lot of medieval history and architecture. There is a ceramicist who gives classes just up the road. You are welcome to borrow a bicycle.
We are about 40 minutes from Cahors, just over an hour from Bergerac, 2ish hours from Toulouse, and Bordeaux is 3 and a bit hours away.
A little more about me: I realised that hosts aren't really asked to describe themselves so you, as a volunteer, have no idea about my personality or interests, other than how I present this profile, so I have added this section so you get an idea about who I am as a person.
I am energetic, creative and gregarious (mostly). In my working life, I was a freelance business analyst & change consultant. I also had a tango school for 20 years where I taught, had visiting teachers, exhibitions, parties, and latterly other disciplines such as swing, yoga, pilates etc. I am a generalist and can turn my hand to most things. I have almost every tool and equipment needed for most things from kitchen to garden to building to sewing. I love the arts and nature, music and games, reading and gardening. I find I am drawn to creative people, but enjoy any open-minded, free-ranging conversation with anyone. I am a pacifist, I don't like tobacco (but you can choose how you kill yourself!) or the nuclear industry. I am green and try to do everything organic.
So, I am a little bit of everything, and I look forward to meeting you and sharing a little of our journey together.
